Children and Pet Allergies: Are Furry Friends Affecting Your ...

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 39% of U.S. households have at least one dog and 33% have at least one cat. Many pets spend a large amount of their lives indoors which results in significant allergy problems for pet owners.

Ten percent of the U.S. population is allergic to pets, and cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies. Oftentimes it is obvious that a child is allergic to dogs or cats, with the child experiencing rapid onset of symptoms shortly after entering an environment where there is an indoor dog or cat. Sometimes the sensitivity to dogs or cats is not as obvious. In cases where it is questionable, allergy testing can be performed to determine whether dog or cat allergy is present and may be playing a role in child?s symptoms.

Individuals allergic to dogs and cats are not actually allergic to the pets, but to a protein produced in the skin. This protein is most commonly contained in dry flakes of skin called pet dander. The pet dander becomes attached to the hair of the animal that is shed around the house and transfers the allergic protein to humans resulting in allergic symptoms. The protein can also be found in the pet?s urine and saliva.

What can I do if my child is allergic to pets?

Recommendations for children with allergies to dogs and cats include environmental control measures and sometimes medication. Getting rid of carpet and area rugs that trap pet dander, the use of a good quality air filter, washing hands after petting the animal, bathing the pet at least once per week, frequent vacuuming and restricting the pet from the bedroom can oftentimes result in significant decrease in allergy symptoms. Certain individuals who have significant allergic sensitivities to dog and cat may need to either have the pets confined to the outdoors completely or find a new home for the pet.? Parents should realize however that removing the pet from the indoor environment will not immediately result in the absence of exposure to pet dander. Even with aggressive cleaning of the home, significant levels of dog and cat dander will remain present for up to 4-6 months following removal of the pet.

Medications that are often helpful for the treatment of allergic symptoms include antihistamines, nasal sprays, eye drops, as well as appropriate asthma and eczema medications. For severe cases, allergy shots may also be recommended.

Visiting a friend with pets

Traveling to visit friends and relatives where there is an indoor pet can present significant problems for children with pet allergies. I advise a phone call prior to the visit to explain the potential problems with the upcoming pet exposure.? You should plan to have the child at the home as little as possible and may want to consider spending the night at a local hotel to prevent your child from developing significant allergic reactions.

Are some pets better than others for children with pet allergies?

While there is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog or cat, certain breeds tend to be less allergenic than others, likely because these breeds tend to shed less hair. The actual length of the hair is not a factor for allergies. The American Kennel Club list of hypoallergenic dogs includes the Bedlington terrier, Bichen Frise, Chinese Crested, Irish Water Spaniel, Kerry Blue Terrier, Maltese, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Schnauzer, soft-coated Wheaten terrier, and Mexican hairless. Certain cat breeds, specifically Siberian and Russian blue cats, are reported to be less allergenic than other breeds. Also, female cats tend to be less allergenic than male cats with neutered male cats being less allergenic than non-neutered.

What are the worst pets for children with pet allergies?

Dogs with dandruff give off more allergic protein and breeds more likely to suffer from dandruff problems include Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, Basset Hounds, West Highland White Terriers, Dachshunds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden retrievers, and German Shepherds.

If you are considering adopting or adding a pet to your family and suspect your child may have pet allergies, I suggest taking the child to visit and spend time at a friend?s home who has a similar pet if possible.

Make sure to ask your Painting Contractor these important ...

Last updated 1 day 1 hour ago

Having your house painted is a major job; you owe it to yourself to ensure that it's done right the first time. When you hire a contractor, don't hesitate to ask questions about every aspect of the project before they begin work. Some smart questions to ask include:

  1. How much will it cost to paint my home? You should always get an estimate from your painting contractor before committing to any project. Be sure to make clear exactly how much of your home you want painted and find out how many coats of paint are required to get the job done. You should also ask which type of paint will be used for your home.
  2. How should I prepare my home to be painted? There are a number of tasks you can perform in order to get your home ready for a paint job. If you are having your exterior painted, washing your walls down with a hose may be all that you need to do. If your interior is being painted, then move as much of your furniture as you can in order to give the painters space.
  3. What safety precautions do you take? Older homes are often coated in lead-based paint, which can be a serious health hazard to you and other residents as it?s removed by a painting contractor. A qualified contractor will have a plan to safely dispose of all paint residue without any inconvenience.
  4. What should I do to take care of the paint? After the painters have left your home, you will need to keep the rooms well ventilated for a few days in order to disperse paint fumes. Ask the contractor what you should do in order to ensure that the paint stays bright and healthy-looking for years to come.

At Superior Pro Home Improvement, we back up every paint job with a written warranty. Our painters are skilled professionals and we only the finest quality painting materials available. Rugby Protection ? Living in the game

Of all the sports that are popular these days, rugby is one of the most difficult to play physical. With skirmish and offers in abundance, it is no wonder that the players are at very high risk of injury. In this sense, rugby protection is available, maintains that this type of injury happens.

There are many types of protection available rugby, helmets, gloves and overalls are all very popular and are made ??from a variety ofknown manufacturers. Adidas, Koog, Canterbury and Puma are just four of many. Let us make a little "more accurate than the type of protective clothing rugby was:

Head Guard ? as the name suggests, these players over the head fit and protects against impact and injury. Usually black, there are small variations in colors including black and white / black and red. Of course, the motives are also on the mark from ? for example, are made of the polderMore space than the design produced by Adidas.

Gloves ? Gloves of rugby have a dual purpose, they are really good for improving the grip of the ball and control the game, but also help to protect your hands from the shock. Once again, depends on the type of mark is made.

There are a lot of dedicated sports shops to choose from, as well as general shops on the main road. Online retailers also carry these items, and is often cheaper to buy online and in stores by retailers because of the drop shipping.

The purchase of protective rugby can often be very confusing to choose what brand and what style. It may be that a parent buys the kit juniorfor her child, in this case, the choice can be even more confused because they can be to not buy certain types of protective kits. As children grow so fast as well, want the kit that is durable and will remain a long-term "take, if possible to buy.

If you are in a situation where you do not know what kind of kit to buy, you need to ask for help from a reliable source. You can have a friend or family member who can help, but if not, why not ask the dealer itself? You will know that any kind of set and doing is best for the situation, so it's definitely a good idea to ask.

To those that divorced post-infidelity...

Are you happier now?
Yes, but somewhat in a bittersweet way. My ex-husband and I wound up being rather different in personalities. It was not until after having a child together did those differences start to cause problems. Frankly, he could be a real a$$hole sometimes. He would even admit it. No longer being under the stress my ex-husband was able to cause me is much better. However, I am beginning to find that I miss the better aspects of marriage lately.

Do you regret the divorce?
No, I do not regret divorcing. Our marriage was done. Too much damage to go back.

Do you still have triggers?
I get a thorn stuck in my paw occasionally. Usually when I see that my ex-husband has changed for the better. I am happy he is striving to be a better person and I hope his new marriage works out. Mostly for my son?s sake. I just often wonder why he could not have been a better husband when we were married and before his poor choices caused so much damage to our marriage.

Does it effect new relationships having been cheated on or having cheated in a marriage?
It does happen to me, but very rarely. A guy may display a behavior with the tiniest similarity to those which led me to question and uncover my ex-husband?s unfaithfulness, it can sometimes give me that stomach dropping feeling. Those actions may not be anything to indicate an individual is committing adultery. It is a behavior, routine or a way of doing something which changed in my ex-husband once he started being unfaithful.

What is your point of view?
I will not allow my ex-husband?s undesirable behaviors in our marriage to take away my ability to love another person. I have lost plenty of me to him already. I am not so unique that there is no man out there who doesn?t share similar morals and values as myself. I believe there are men out there who will not cheat on their partner. I?m hopeful that same man can give as much love to a relationship as I can. A man who realizes that a successful, loving relationship does not happen just because you marry a woman.

Why Kids Prefer Wooden Playhouses

Many children would like to have their own playhouse, especially one which has been built specifically for them rather than being the same as every other playhouse around. Mass produced plastic or resin playhouses are fine, but your child will be much more excited by a wooden playhouse which is uniquely their own. All too many children spend their leisure time indoors surfing the web or watching television, though with the right playhouse, they will be much more likely to be interested in spending time outside getting some much needed fresh air and exercise.

One of the advantages of building a wooden playhouse is that you get to build it all yourself in any size or shape you like. Wood is a relatively easy material to work with, so you can cut and finish the wood yourself and unlike plastic or metal, it is easy to resize any part which does not fit together quite right. However, if you are not the do it yourself type, you can also find a contractor or carpenter who is experienced in making wooden playhouses to build one for your child.

A wooden playhouse will become an important part of your child?s life and you can make your child?s new playhouse match their interests perfectly. For example, if your child is interested in arts and crafts, you could set up their playhouse as a sort of studio for them; if they spend a lot of time reading, you can make their playhouse their library. It is also easy to change things around to suit your child?s changing interests as they grow ? and most wooden playhouses are relatively portable, so it can be moved with ease when needed.

A lot of people assume that building a playhouse is difficult or time consuming and this may be the case depending on the type of playhouse you have in mind and your level of skill as a woodworker. However, it can be a wonderful thing for your child that will become a cherished childhood memory. Easy to work with, portable and almost endlessly customizable, a wooden playhouse can be a fun and safe play space for your child which can encourage them to become more active and to use their imagination in their play and development.

As you will easily see, building a playhouse for your kids isn?t really that difficult and it will give you lots of fun.

Peter Craft is a woodworker lover and is a garden enthusiast who has a website dedicated to woodworking projects and that has a lot of information about wooden playhouses. With the right playhouses plans you can easily build your own woodworking projects with confidence. You can also browse our selection of woodworking videos.

Movea unveils full body motion capture and gesture ... - My Company PR

Grenoble, France, June 28, 2011 ? Movea, a world leader in motion technology, now enables full body gesture recognition with its recently launched MEMS-based MotionPod? solution for low cost, full body motion capture. The solution can be used to enable more realistic avatar motion for gaming or highly accurate biomechanical analysis for sports applications and is now available for B2B customers in the sports and entertainment markets.

Together with its jointly run research partner, the Motion Lab, Movea has developed a MEMS sensor-based, full body motion capture system, enabling a computerized avatar to reproduce a person?s body movements in real-time, with an accuracy that matches the efficiency of more expensive video systems.

?By attaching MotionPods on a person?s body limbs, our system can track any movement in 3D to a fine degree of accuracy. We have developed a biomechanical model taking into account human constraints such as the fact that a knee can only bend forward,? explained Bruno Flament, Movea CTO. ?This model therefore can reproduce human body motion realistically and accurately.?

In addition to tracking motion in real time, Movea has developed expertise in live gesture recognition. Movea has been pioneering gesture recognition for use in remote controls and computer mice. Gesture recognition allows consumers to control televisions and personal computers through simple hand gestures and the ability to create user-specific sign-on gestures. These techniques are now being used for the first time for full body gesture recognition. The full body positional information and motion is compared in real-time against a library of full body gestures. For example, in the case of a yoga or martial arts application, it can help guide the user into the correct position. For an avatar in a game, Movea?s technology speeds up the game action such as taking an arrow out of a quiver and firing it from a bow as the early detection feature recognizes the start of a gesture without having to wait for it to be completed, triggering the game action early and ensure a continuous user experience.

?Our new approach offers many advantages,? explained David Rothenberg, World Wide Marketing Manager for Movea. ?It is an incredibly simple to use, extremely accurate, and low cost solution that does not come with the expense or operational constraints of more complex video-based systems. We have packaged all our expertise in motion technology into an off the shelf, ready to use solution.?

Traditional full body motion capture typically uses dots or balls attached to a suit worn by actors with cameras capturing their movement. This efficient but costly system requires a fully equipped motion capture room, experienced users and sophisticated programs to convert this into usable information controlling computer avatars. The optical-based systems approach, whether it is for movie animation, sports or gaming, limits the field of action as the actor or player needs to remain in a defined Motion Capture Volume without obstacles that would obstruct camera?s vision.

Movea?s solution uses up to 5 MotionPods, which each allow 6 Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) for full 3D motion capture, and are fitted to key parts of the body to form a Body Area Network (BAN) that enables detailed full body motion to be captured in real time with dynamic accuracy of one degree. These Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) transmits highly accurate movement information through a 2.4GHz wireless link to a MotionController? central receiver unit, plugged into a computer via a USB port.

MotionPod
The MotionPod? is a patented hardware solution for motion sensing that incorporates a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis magnetometer in fully integrated package complete with software and wireless interface. The MotionPod measures 33x22x15mm (1.3?x0.8?x0.6?) and weighs 14g (0.5 oz). It is designed to clip onto a bracelet or strap for easy attachment to the body. Each MotionPod has a built-in, 2.4GHz wireless transmitter that uses Movea?s proprietary wireless technology to deliver a range of up to 30m (100 ft) with very low power consumption to maximise battery life, providing up to 8 hours of usage.

SmartMotion by Movea
Movea is a leading provider of motion processing chips, software, firmware, and IP for the Consumer Electronics industry. Movea?s unique motion processing capabilities enable customers and partners to quickly add motion intelligence to their products, meaning reduced risk, cost, and Time-to-Market for delivering compelling new motion-based features that create more end-user value. Movea has a global reach with headquarters in Grenoble, France, a U.S. subsidiary in Silicon Valley, California, as well as technology partners, manufacturing partners and distributors around the world. Sport of billiards: very funny, very old, very meditative

Billiards as a sport is quite old, with his creation extends all the way up to 15 century. At some point in the history of sports, billiards cue was actually a "balliards" and has been shown, in fact, than those in Mother Hubbard's Tale. As everyone should be able to efficiently view was the name of the sport originally from the relatively simple fact, which is committed with the use of billiard balls derived.

> Billiards probably not at any time in the near future, the first choice for many young people today as a source of entertainment within easy reach of the entertainment offered to them all in the comfort and calm of its rooms with video games and television. Since these games can be used effectively in the bedroom young adults to alienate themselves from the world that are outside their homeland. Here is the beauty of this sportPool: Socialization is a prerequisite.

Billiards, however, requires a form of concentration, just completely missing, is from the ADHD-inducing video games and other forms of on-demand, flash animation, which exist at the present time.

Billiards requires manual dexterity. Have a game of pool play and learn to manipulate not only the fingers to form the different styles of bridges, but the curvature of the spine, shoulder placement, the angle of the elbow, and where the keyword to understand in order. There are a variety of other aspects of the physiology of the pool, which can be programmed only taught through constant repetition in the brain and muscles, and with the help of professional instructors. Proper posture can indeed be observed aware, but the domain is not occur until it is strictly a matter of muscle memory subconscious. The muscle memory is the ability for your bodyhard to remember to take where, and how to move around to perform a given set of actions.

Billiards (or "balliards") is a challenge, but the biggest challenge is part of what makes it fun. A good player should be mentally prepared to move and the changing environments of quiet private room of a club of families to loud, noisy bar, where some people drink too much to resist. Practices that require more land focus, to engage inoften require a larger amount of initial energy use even a novice level of skill to build, but increases the difficulty, in fact, the fun that can come from practice.

Tips on destinations for your summer holiday - Travel

How do you start to decide where to go on holiday? There is just so much choice! Many people choose the Canary Islands because of the Tenerife weather, but surely there is more to it than that? There is great weather in Greece.

Are there any other good reasons to visit the island? Or is it just about the weather? Well plenty of resorts in the South mean that it isnt hard to pick up a great deal, even during the summer. You dont have to be pigeon holed into cheap but basic accommodation either, there are plenty of really smart five star properties on the island too. If you dont want to, you dont really need to leave the resorts as they have everything that you need. You should be able to find all your home comforts right there in the resort. The beaches are made with imported sand from the Sahara too, so there is plenty of space.

But what if you arent the sort of person who is just looking for sunny Tenerife weather when you are deciding where to go on holiday.

If you are looking for adventure or culture surely you would need to look somewhere else?

Tenerife holidays may not be famous for cultural breaks, but stand by for a shock as there are plenty of great cultural activities in Tenerife. You really just need to get off the beach and out of the theme pub and leave the resort.

You dont even have to go that far from the resort. Take a one hour bus ride to Santa Cruz, the capital of the Canaries. It is almost like stepping into a different world compared to the bold and brash purpose built resort of Playa de las Americas.

You dont tend to see too many tourists in Santa Cruz and you are much more likely to enjoy an authentic look at local life.

When you are thinking about when to go to Tenerife it is hard to decide as there really isnt a bad time. Well although it is cooler in winter, you can expect year round good weather. In fact, with such reliable weather you should probably give more though to what is going on around the island. Carnival time in February can be a great time for a holiday in Tenerife. It is often said that the only carnival in the world more exciting than Santa Cruz is in Rio itself!

It isnt just carnival though, there are interesting events all year. How about the Noche de San Juan which is another great time to be on the island? Any festival that ends with beach bonfires and chilled out parties has to be a great holiday event. The festival also happens just before the school holidays so you can also get a great deal on your trip.

Health and Fitness Articles ? Blog Archive ? Combination Therapies ...

Major injury resulting in Minor injury resulting in Low back pain and neck pain resulting from inflammation or injury to the spinal disc, joints of the spinal column or pinched spinal nerves respond favorably to combination therapy. Multiple therapies involves the application of three types of treatments applied in conjunction.

The combination therapy are E-stim, sound wave therapy and chiropractic treatment. Each treatment helps to reduce inflammation, decrease pain and elevate or Velcro straps. Electrical nerve and muscle stimulation is a form of electronic modulated therapy used for muscle relaxation and pain control.

The initial therapy is electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), also known as E-stim, is the stimulation of muscle tension using electric impulses. The EMS is delivered through therapy pads placed on the skin surface directly over the muscles of the back or neck. The electronic stimulus causes the muscles to weaken and tire.

The applicator pads are silicon or wet sponges that apply to the skin usually using adhesive surface or Velcro straps. Electrical muscle stimulation is a type of electronic modulated therapy used for muscle fatigue and pain reduction.

The 2nd therapy is ultrasonic therapy in which reverberating sound waves penetrate the neck and back muscles producing a deep heat or pulsating feeling. The sound waves of therapeutic ultrasound penetrate soft tissue from 2 to 5 cm. The penetrating heating effect and intensity decreases as the sound waves penetrate deeper into the neck and back muscles. The ultrasonic waves are affected primarily by connective tissue such as: muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons.

Two benefits of ultrasound Deep heating thermal benefits and non thermal tissue vibration effects. The thermal effects are due to the sound waves producing kinetic energy and motion within the tissue. The sound waves creates a penetrating warm relaxing sensitive neck and back muscles, increasing the blood flow and therefore the healing time frame.

The non heating effects of ultrasound are from the sound waves creating vibrations. The tissue motion directly effects the damaged muscles. These vibrations help the tissue effects of the healing response.

The third back and neck treatment is chiropractic spinal treatment. Chiropractic manipulation refers to a chiropractor treating with manipulation to the spinal vertebrae of the neck and back that have motion or restricted and fixed in position. Chiropractic treatment or chiropractic adjustment is a common therapeutic treatment for the relief of neck and back pain.

The objective of chiropractic spinal manipulation is to align spinal vertebra which will increase the joint range of motion, decrease irritated nerves and thereby reduce associated neck and back muscle spasms.

Neck and back pain relief is aided using combination therapy: e-stim, therapeutic ultrasound and chiropractic spinal manipulation.

Looking to find information on back therapy, then go to Dr. Maryam Jafarieh?s website to find the best advice on back pain relief therapy for you.

A small water feature makes a big impact with the right plants

The plants make all the difference in this attractive water feature.

Do you ever long for a large water feature in your landscape? But considerations of money, time, maintenance, logistics or all of the above keep that from happening?

If you find yourself confined to thinking smaller when it comes to water, take a tip from the design of Roger Williams, Phil Wood, and Bob Lily.

These talented gentlemen were responsible for the Washington Arboretum Foundation?s display at Seattle?s 2011 Northwest Flower & Garden Show. Winning both a gold and the Pacific Horticulture Magazine award, this clever garden celebrated the Arboretum?s 50th anniversary of its own Japanese Garden.

My favorite part of the display was how the designers handled water. They combined a small water feature with a large planting that mimics water.

A modest pool with a bamboo clacker [see first photo at left] gives the needed sound and sparkle. Then dwarf green mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) steps in as a water substitute.

The low-growing lily turf grasses spill down from the real water and flow under the bridge [see second photo at left; click on the arrow at the right base of the first photo] to form a pond. Large rocks rise up from the planting, like islands in a grassy sea. Rounded river cobbles form a beach on the edge.

What makes it work

Designers view water as a calming negative space. ?Negative space can be so important in a garden,? says Mr. Wood, a landscape architect, ?especially if it?s large enough to create a foil for planting complexity around it.?

In this case, the dwarf mondo grass forms the negative space, acting like water and giving the illusion of a flat surface. All the pool plant material grows at the same height.

If you want to plan your own "herbaceous pond," look for plants with uniformity of growth.

Positioned on the banks of what the designers call the ?metaphorical pool,? are evergreen shrubs Sarcococca rusicifolia (fragrant sweet box) and taller black mondo grasses (Ophiopogon planiscapus ?nigrescens?). Echoing its cousin, the dwarf lily turf in the pool, the black mondo grass stands out with bolder dark color and a more upright form.

For your own pond edges, choose strongly architectural plants that will supply the contrasting complexity to the faux water?s calm surface.

Foliage color counts. For the show pool, designers Williams, Woods, and Lily chose darker rather than lighter vegetation. The densely planted deep green grasses reinforce the idea of water.

When you are considering what you could plant, look for evergreens whose strength is foliage, not flowers.

How to plant like water

While this restrained color palette is suitable to the arboretum?s Japanese theme, for your own ?water,? you could put together two contrasting color choices.

Swirls of lighter and darker plantings might mimic the motion of water, with highlighted ripples, and deeper-colored wave troughs. This could be particularly effective when planted around rocks. You could delineate the moving water with color as it crests around the barrier.

Finally, study how water moves in nature. It careens off steep banks. It deposits beaches in calm spots.

When you plan your design, consider where water wants to go and where it might be already on your own property. Perhaps you can combine a small water feature with a rain garden that imitates a stream and pond and place it at an existing low point or wet area.

Spring RV roof inspection tips

Roof inspection and maintenance tips (metal and rubber)

Spring is the time to go up the ladder and take a good look at the RV roof condition. The rubber membrane on the roof of a is made ??very strong and durable, but it is very thin and can be pierced by a sharp object be. Yes, you can carefully walk on the surface, but first check your shoes for stones embedded and the like, which may damage the roof, the first steparound there. Underlying the rubber is typically a 3/16th of plywood 1 / 2 inch or chipboard sheets, which carries the weight evenly. If the roof is made of metal, especially if it's the kind of seams, (has cross seams every 48 "or so), so there was a strip of plywood or some wide boards (lengthwise) to commit. In this way the plates span the rafters and distribute the weight evenly across different media.

Check carefully the overhanging roof coat condition of each unit and eachCracks or thin spots can be touched with the appropriate material. If the roof is peeling or flaking coating in any way, then the old coating must be removed by scraping it. On metal roofs I have a 1 "to use wide paring knife with a company, such as the use of technicians for cars scraping old gaskets. For rubber roofs I made a plastic scraper that will not cut the membrane. If the old coating heat with a heat gun come off fairly easily.

For metal roofs, use theAluminum roof coat, in shades of gray or white, and brush on about 1 / 8 "thick mix. Very thorough and a warm day for best results. To Rubber, use elastomeric roof coating is safe for rubber roofs or special self-leveling sealant RV the shops are sold for this purpose. Use will never enter a petroleum based product on a roof made ??of rubber as a rubber membrane. Moreover, while silicone chalking a place in the motor home, has no place onRoof. Silicone and do not stick well, the rubber and a metal roof, that in some places and in other non-stick injury caused pockets of water trap.

Google says probing search companies market practices (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. antitrust regulators have started a formal investigation into whether Google Inc abuses its market power by favoring its own services over those of rivals in online searches and through other practices.

Google, which dominates U.S. and global markets for search engine advertising, said on Friday on its official blog that it had been notified on Thursday by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission that it was reviewing Google's business practices.

The company has been accused of anticompetitive practices by other companies doing business online.

"It's still unclear exactly what the FTC's concerns are, but we're clear about where we stand," Google blogged. "Since the beginning, we have been guided by the idea that if we focus on the user all else will follow."

Complaints against Google have been filed with regulators on both sides of the Atlantic, many from companies specializing in vertical searches, such as price comparison websites.

U.S. antitrust regulators have expressed concern about Google's dominance of the Internet search industry, and the company has been under investigation by the European Commission since last November.

Shares of Google, the world's most popular search engine, began the year a touch above $600. The shares were trading at $474.38 on Friday afternoon.

Google has weathered antitrust challenges. It walked away from a search deal with Yahoo! Inc in 2008 when the U.S. Justice Department signaled that it was prepared to contest it.

"Typically less than one out of every 10 investigations lead to enforcement. This investigation faces daunting odds," said David Balto, a former FTC policy director.

"The complaints presented to the FTC are from disgruntled advertisers, not consumers. That is not a strong foundation to an antitrust case."

A New York judge has said that a deal between Google and publishers and authors to create a massive digital library was illegal, partially because it effectively gave Google the rights to books that are in copyright but whose authors cannot be located.

ETF Investors Suggest Real Estate Might Not Be Dead - ETFChannel ...

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) trade just like stocks, but instead of ?shares? investors are actually buying and selling ?units?. These ?units? can be traded back and forth just like stocks, but can also be created or destroyed to accommodate investor demand. Each week we monitor the week-over-week change in shares outstanding data, to keep a lookout for those ETFs experiencing notable inflows (many new units created) or outflows (many old units destroyed). Creation of new units will mean the underlying holdings of the ETF need to be purchased, while destruction of units involves selling underlying holdings, so large flows can also impact the individual components held within ETFs.

Looking today at week-over-week shares outstanding changes among the universe of ETFs covered at ETF Channel, one standout is the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Real Estate Index Fund (IYR) where we have detected an approximate $509.2 million dollar inflow ? that?s a 16.3% increase week over week in outstanding units (from 51,450,000 to 59,850,000). Among the largest underlying components of IYR, in trading today Vornado Realty Trust (VNO) is down about 0.1%, and Annaly Capital Management Incorporated (NLY) is up by about 0.9%. For a complete list of holdings, visit the IYR Holdings page ?

The chart below shows the one year price performance of IYR, versus its 200 day moving average:

iShares Dow Jones U.S. Real Estate Index Fund 200 Day Moving Average Chart

Looking at the chart above, IYR?s low point in its 52 week range is $44.85 per share, with $62.80 as the 52 week high point ? that compares with a last trade of $60.73. Comparing the most recent share price to the 200 day moving average can also be a useful technical analysis technique ? learn more about the 200 day moving average ?.

Sade Keeps It Super Smooth On NY Tour Stop

'Soldier of Love' singer performed classics and recent hits after John Legend warmed up the crowd.
By Rebecca Thomas

UNIONDALE, New York — If the name Sade only conjures up a melancholy Diddy-Dirty Money lyric (from "Ass on the Floor"), then her reemergence on Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum, a week into the North American leg of her 2011 world tour might not seem significant. But it's been a decade since the iconic, often reclusive singer hit the road, and her presence onstage seemed to prove that pop still has its constants.

Over the course of about 90 minutes, the Nigerian-born Brit waded through a discography that spans nearly 30 years and never seems to collect dust. In fact, her opener, "Soldier of Love" is a pounding battle hymn that shares little of the DNA of her '80s classics. Dressed in all-black and perched atop strappy stilettos, Sade whipped up the adoring crowd, marching on to the stage and punctuating the song's insistent drum line with kick steps.

At 52, she is almost as willowy now — and still sporting the same slick ponytail, scarlet-stained lips and hoop earrings — as she is in those early MTV music videos for standards like "Smooth Operator," which proved to be a multigenerational crowd-pleaser on Tuesday. And her smoky alto had a vocal range deceptively broader than her records might suggest.

Supported by her longtime band/collaborators, Sade shimmied and kept the pace in flux, going from introspective ballads, like "Kiss of Life"(from Love Deluxe) and "Pearls," to midtempo cuts, like the roots-tinged "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" and "Sweetest Taboo." This was notable because she's built a catalog lined with sleepy tunes seemingly designed to ease you through the stages of heartbreak.

While the boomer contingent came to their feet whenever the star dipped back to her '85 Diamond Life debut (some even danced junior-prom style in the aisles), others were excited to hear her work from 2000's Lovers Rock. If Picasso had his Blue Period, that album could be considered Sade's Red, Yellow and Green period: The songstress had fallen in love and settled in Jamaica's Montego Bay and seemed to absorb the culture, even sporting the signature Rasta colors on the album's cover. She joined her backup singers for the blissful "All About Our Love" and demonstrated why she's worn the crown for so long on "King of Sorrow."

Before signing off with another Rock cut, "By Your Side," Sade recalled coming to NYC in her 20s, just another girl and her band trying to make it, and jokingly compared herself to Crocodile Dundee.

It was probably only fitting that Maxwell was sitting just a few rows back from the stage on Tuesday night. The crooner is arguably one of the few who can even blink in Sade's direction. John Legend is another, and he showed why during his opening set, throwing himself into smashes like "Ordinary People" and a delicious new arrangement of his "Green Light."

Court rules against Anna Nicole Smith's estate (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Supreme Court has ruled against the estate of Anna Nicole Smith in its quest to capture some of the $1.6 billion estate left behind by her late Texas billionaire husband.

The high court on Thursday ruled that a bankruptcy court's decision to give the now-deceased Playmate $475 million from the estate of oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall was decided incorrectly.

Smith and Marshall were wed in 1994, and he died the next year.

His will left his estate to his son, E. Pierce Marshall, and nothing to Smith. A California bankruptcy court awarded Smith part of the estate, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal said that a bankruptcy court could not make a decision on an issue outside of bankruptcy law.

The high court agreed.

Eden Valley communities ? Big Society in action : Cumbria Crack News

Over 100 people gathered at the Rheged Centre on Saturday to hear about the experiences and achievements that are really making a difference to the people involved in the Eden Valley Big Society Vanguard, the only RURAL Big Society vanguard in the country.

The ?Big Society ? Rural Action? conference, organised by Action with Communities in Cumbria (ACT) and supported by Eden District Council and the North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (NWIEP), included key speakers from national Government, Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE), and Eden District Council, all of whom spoke about the changes brought forward by the Big Society agenda.

Front L ? R: Peter Smith, Director of Heart of Eden Development Trust and Chairman of Bolton Parish Council; Sylvia Brown OBE Chief Executive of ACRE; Penrith MP Rory Stewart OBE; Ruth Willis Chief Executive ACTion with Communities in Cumbria. Back L ? R: Councillor Gordon Nicholson Leader of Eden District Council; David Graham Chairman of the Lyvennet Community Trust; Anton Draper Department for Communities and Local Government.

In particular, the conference celebrated the achievements of the community groups active in the Eden Valley Vanguard area. Representatives from groups working in the Heart of Eden, Upper Eden, and Lyvennet Valley areas spoke of the many community led projects being developed and their experiences of being part of the vanguard.

The Big Society is the Government?s vision of a society where individuals and communities have more power and responsibility, and use it to create better neighbourhoods and local services. Rural communities in Cumbria have a long tradition of self-reliance, residents are well used to finding their own solutions to local issues and many are already involved in this type of activity.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and advocacy of Rory Stewart, MP for Penrith & the Borders, the three groups of communities in the Eden Valley were included as a rural pilot in the Big Society Vanguard programme announced by the Prime Minister on 19th July 2010.

Since then local people have worked closely with Rory and with colleagues from a range of government departments and agencies to take forward key projects, many of which had been identified previously in their Community Led Plans.

Penrith MP Rory Stewart OBE said ?Saturday?s conference was the culmination of several months of very hard work on the part of the Eden vanguard communities, civil servants from London assigned to ?barrier-bust?, and many, many others who have all contributed in some way to the success of our Big Society projects. But this is really only the beginning; we must now be able to build on our successes and ensure that other communities can begin to benefit from the very valuable lessons that we have learned in the course of the last year.

?ACT has done a great job in compiling some excellent case studies, which deal with issues from renewable energy projects to community pub buy-outs to neighbourhood planning. We need now to ensure that the inkspot of learning spreads to benefit communities across Cumbria.?

Peter Smith, Heart of Eden Development Trust; Tom Woof, Upper Eden Community Plan group; and Annie Kindleysides, Lyvennet Valley Community Plan group, each gave presentations highlighting the hard work going on in their communities to identify what issues are important to local residents and the community led projects being developed to address these issues.

Annie Kindleysides commented on the project ?we had reservations about being drawn into such a political initiative but saw it as an opportunity to publicise what we were already doing and to make central Government more aware of the particular challenges faced by those of us who live in small rural communities.?

?These concerns seem rarely to inform central Government policy. We hoped to impress on central Government that assistance with access to start up or feasibility funding was vital for this kind of volunteer effort to be successful. Also we wanted to stress that volunteers cannot work alone and require support and advice from existing agencies. ?Our efforts are extra to, not a substitute for existing local government services?

Discussion workshops in the afternoon gave the opportunity to look at projects in more detail. Delegates heard about the Lyvennet Community Trust?s affordable housing project; community transport projects led by the Heart of Eden Development Trust and Upper Eden Community Plan group; the Lyvennet community owned pub in Crosby Ravensworth; and the Upper Eden Local Planning Policy, the only pilot Neighbourhood Planning project led by the community instead of a local authority.

A number of community renewable energy projects were also discussed including: an anaerobic digester in Lyvennet Valley; photo voltaic (PV) solar panels at Bolton Memorial Hall; wind turbine at Wharton; and a hydro scheme at Bongate Weir.

Anton Draper, from the Department for Communities and Local Government, has been working closely with the communities for the past year.? He was impressed by the commitment shown by the people he met.

?The work here didn?t start with the vanguard and won?t end with the vanguard.? If you have the opportunity, I would encourage you to go and visit the community projects in the Eden Valley, and the people who are involved in making them happen.?

Ruth Willis, ACT Chief Executive said ?the Eden Valley Big Society Vanguard has provided the opportunity to raise the profile of rural issues with government at both a local and national level and has highlighted the need for both to work differently with communities.

?The benefit of Community Led Planning as a way to identify issues important to local residents has also been recognised, as well as the need for communities to be given the space to innovate and access to funding to help to get projects started. Investing in community led initiatives presents good value for money ? for individuals, for businesses, and for government, as well as innovative long-lasting solutions tailored to local need.?

Councillor Gordon Nicolson, Eden District Council?s Leader said: ?This well organised and attended event showcased the achievements of local communities in the Eden Valley Vanguard area. As a Council we support the development of our communities through a planning and enabling role, to sustain local services and realise local people?s ambitions for their area.

?I was very encouraged to see the impressive range of people in the audience from practitioners, academics, volunteers, and professionals and to see a consensus building to sustain this work in the future, with consideration being given to ensuring all members of communities are involved in the Big Society, including young people and those more vulnerable and isolated. The Council will be ready for this challenge, by transforming the way it works to deliver more community led services in the future.?

What has been taking place here in Eden is of national interest; ACT has been observing and recording the work of local residents to produce a set of case studies and guidance sheets for communities.
