Government quietly replacing some body scanners

CHICAGO (AP) ? The federal government is quietly removing full-body X-ray scanners from seven major airports and replacing them with a different type of machine that produces a cartoon-like outline instead of the naked images that have been compared to a virtual strip search.

The Transportation Security Administration says it is making the switch in technology to speed up lines at crowded airports, not to ease passenger privacy concerns. But civil liberties groups hope the change signals that the equipment will eventually go to the scrap heap.

"Hopefully this represents the beginning of a phase-out of the X-ray-type scanners, which are more privacy intrusive and continue to be surrounded by health questions," said Jay Stanley, a privacy expert at the American Civil Liberties Union.

The machines will not be retired. They are being moved to smaller airports while Congress presses the TSA to adopt stronger privacy safeguards on all of its imaging equipment.

In the two years since they first appeared at the nation's busiest airports, the "backscatter" model of scanner has been the focus of protests and lawsuits because it uses X-rays to peer beneath travelers' clothing.

The machines are being pulled out of New York's LaGuardia and Kennedy airports, Chicago's O'Hare, Los Angeles International and Boston Logan, as well as airports in Charlotte, N.C., and Orlando, Fla.

The TSA would not comment on whether it planned to remove machines from any other locations.

Some of the backscatter scanners have gone to airports in Mesa, Ariz., Key West, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The TSA is still deciding where to send others.

The switch is being made as the TSA is under political pressure. Legislation approved in February gave the agency until June to get rid of the X-ray scanners or upgrade them with software that produces only a generic outline of the human form, not a blurry naked image. The agency, however, has the authority to grant itself extensions, and the current deadline is now May 31.

So far, the upgrades have been made only to the TSA's other type of scanner. Called millimeter-wave scanners, they resemble a large glass phone booth and use radio frequencies instead of X-rays to detect objects concealed beneath clothing.

The scan is processed by software instead of an airport security worker. If the software identifies a potential threat, a mannequin-like image is presented to the operator showing yellow boxes over areas requiring further inspection, by a pat-down for example.

Besides eliminating privacy concerns, the machine requires fewer people to operate, takes up less space in crowded security zones and completes a scan in less than two seconds, allowing screening lines to move faster.

"It's all done automatically to look for threats, so you don't have anybody in a back room that has to look at the imaging," said Doug McMakin, who led the team that developed the millimeter-wave technology at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

In a statement, officials said speed was the reason for the switch to the millimeter-wave machines.

In addition to speed and space advantages, the millimeter-wave technology does not produce the ionizing radiation that has led to safety concerns with the X-ray machines, which required passengers to stand between two refrigerator-sized boxes.

The TSA and other experts have said the amount of radiation is less than what passengers get on the flight itself.

A TSA spokesman would not say whether the change was the beginning of a phase-out for the X-ray scanners. The agency said in the statement that it was confident both types of machine could ensure passenger safety.

The government began deploying both types to airports in 2010 after a foiled al-Qaida plot to bomb a U.S.-bound jet using explosives that can be missed by traditional metal detectors.

The scanners can cost as much as $170,000 each. There are currently about 800 of them at 200 U.S. airports. About two-thirds of them are the millimeter-wave machines.

The TSA has spent nearly $8 million developing the upgraded privacy software and plans to spend more as it works to develop software for the backscatter machines, according to a September report by the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security.

The committee's Republican chairman, Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama, said the TSA needs to be more forthcoming about when it will have that upgrade "rather than simply shuffling" the machines from one airport to another.

"Travelers deserve to see a concrete timeline for implementing privacy software on all (scanning) machines and a commitment from TSA to sponsor an independent analysis of their potential health impact," he said.

Aviation expert Robert Poole of the Reason Foundation said it made sense to switch to the millimeter-wave scanners at busier airports, noting that "the faster processing time is a huge advantage."

"But it still seems like a very poor decision to still be foisting those flawed machines ? or certainly less good machines ? on people in the smaller airports," he said.

Foreign fighters boosting Syrian rebels raise concerns over al-Qaida ties

ALEPPO, Syria (AP) ? The presence of foreign Islamic militants battling Syria's regime is raising concerns over the possible injection of al-Qaida's influence into the country's civil war.

Syria's rebels share some of those misgivings. But they also see in the foreign extremists a welcome boost: experienced, disciplined fighters whose battlefield valor against the better-armed troops of President Bashar Assad is legendary.

Nothing typifies the dilemma more than Jabhat al-Nusra, a shadowy group with an al-Qaida-style ideology whose fighters come from Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the Balkans and elsewhere. Many are veterans of previous wars who came to Syria for what they consider a new "jihad" against Assad.

The group has become notorious for numerous suicide bombings during the 19-month-old conflict targeting regime and military facilities. Syria's rebels have tried to disassociate themselves from the bombings for fear their uprising will be tainted with the al-Qaida brand.

But several hundred fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra ? Arabic for "the Support Front" ? have also been a valued addition to rebel ranks in the grueling, three-month battle for control of Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Their reputation in battle circulates among Aleppo's rebels like an urban legend. Soon after opposition forces launched their assault on the city in July, government troops almost drove them out of the key district of Salaheddin ? until 40 Jabhat al-Nusra fighters rushed to the front and fended them off, according to a story told by many rebels.

The group's fighters have played a similar role along the multitude of front lines that divide this city of 3 million people, where regime forces and rebels have been at a standstill, fighting street to street but unable to score a decisive victory. Many rebels talk of the al-Nusra fighters' prowess as snipers.

"They rush to the rescue of rebel lines that come under pressure and hold them," one rebel said. "They know what they are doing and are very disciplined. They are like the special forces of Aleppo."

But he added: "The only thing is that they are too radical." He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals by both Jabhat al-Nusra and the Assad regime.

In a statement posted on militant websites Wednesday, Jabhat al-Nusra rejected a proposed cease-fire during the four-day Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which starts Friday. International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has been trying to cobble together such a truce, saying the government in Damascus and some rebels have agreed to the idea.

But Jabhat al-Nusra called a truce a "filthy game," saying it has no faith that Assad's regime would respect one. Some Syrian rebel leaders have also expressed skepticism, since previous cease-fire attempts have gone nowhere.

Jabhat al-Nusra is the largest grouping of foreign jihadis in Syria, and the rebels say they number about 300 fighters in Aleppo, as well as branches in neighboring Idlib province, the city of Homs and the capital Damascus. Any direct links to al-Qaida are unclear, although U.S. and Iraqi officials have said they believe members of al-Qaida's branch in Iraq have crossed the border to join the fight against Assad.

There are no reliable figures for the number of foreign fighters in Syria, although available estimates put the number in the hundreds, rather than the thousands.

Many al-Nusra fighters wear long tunics and baggy pants in the style of mujahedeen or "holy warriors" in Afghanistan, and nearly all have beards, a hallmark of religious piety. A few smear kohl on their eyes and have long hair, emulating what they believe is a style favored by Islam's Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century.

The fighters keep a low profile. They have turned a government building in Aleppo into their headquarters, but it is barely noticeable since it contains no banners or flags to give it away. Only occasional graffiti announces their presence in the city: "Jabhat al-Nusra is coming." Rebels who spoke with The Associated Press about the group had no clear idea about its leadership.

The fighters shun the media, but information gleaned from Syrians in contact with them paints a picture of militant Muslims motivated by a jihadi ideology not unlike that of al-Qaida. Their members include propagandists, trainers, surgeons and other medical doctors.

Many Syrian rebels are themselves pious Muslims who frame the fight against Assad's regime in a religious context. But some see the jihadis' brand of Islam as too starkly black-and-white and intolerant, dividing the world between the faithful and the infidels. Their presence, some fear, casts doubts on whether a post-Assad Syria will embrace democratic values or come under the sway of Islamists.

A staffer at a field hospital in a rebel-held part of Aleppo, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals for talking about the group, said the al-Nusra fighters "are fine now, because they are fighting alongside the rebels."

An AP team witnessed some of the frictions at the field hospital in mid-October. Several al-Nusra fighters entered, and one of them ? a tall, lanky non-Arab dressed in black with a black headband ? was enraged by the presence of foreign journalists at the facility.

"They are all spies who are here to collect information," he said in English, shaking the automatic rifle that was slung over his shoulder.

Another fighter, who appeared to be of North African origin, tried to force a female photographer to leave the hospital after she attempted to photograph the X-ray of a wounded fighter's head.

A Syrian rebel commander confronted the two men.

"There is nothing in Islam that permits you to treat guests like this. Furthermore, it is a woman," he said. The fighters left and the commander offered tea and dates to the photographer and several other journalists.

Opposition members also worry that the presence of foreign jihadis in Syria lends credibility to the regime's repeated assertions that the rebellion is the work of terrorist groups carrying out a "foreign conspiracy."

Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for a string of suicide bombings, including several in Damascus. It unleashed an Oct. 3 suicide blast in Aleppo that killed more than 30 people, targeting a square where pro-regime fighters congregated. After each blast, the rebels' Free Syrian Army umbrella group underlines that it does not approve of suicide bombings as a tactic.

"Their presence is reducing the popular support that we desperately need in areas where we operate," a senior political official of the Free Syrian Army, said in neighboring Turkey. "I appreciate their motives for coming to Syria. We cannot deny Muslims their right to jihad, but we want them to leave." He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss concerns over the group.

Still, in Aleppo, the image of pious Islamic warriors coming to help in the fight against Assad is an attractive one. Though Jabhat al-Nusra is predominantly made up of foreigners, a few Syrians have joined, mostly ultraconservative Muslims.

Syrians can join only if they are backed by two full members who must swear on the Quran to tell the truth about the applicant. The fighters run training programs for their Syrian members as well as others who want to learn fighting skills but don't want to join the group.

The high esteem in which the Jabhat al-Nusra fighters are held has a great deal to do with the unruly behavior and lack of discipline of many rebels.

One recent night, al-Nusra fighters brought the bodies of four Syrian rebels who were killed when a fellow rebel they were interrogating over suspicion that he was stealing grabbed an assault rifle and shot them. A fifth rebel was wounded.

Later, when comrades of the four dead heard the news they gathered outside the hospital and, enraged, fired their entire bullet magazines into the air. Another group of fighters reacted similarly when struck by grief over the death of a comrade.

Residents of Aleppo also complain that some rebels take unfair advantage of their position.

Fighters go straight to the front of the line at bakeries to buy bread when residents have to wait hours for their turn. Some demand that wounded comrades be treated ahead of civilians at the field hospital.

"I don't have time to wait in line," said a 19-year-old army deserter who joined the rebels in Aleppo and gave only his first name, Hani.

Heart attack victims in rich, white neighborhoods twice as likely to get CPR than people who collapse in poor, black neighborhoods

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? In the first study of its kind, researchers have found that those who suffer cardiac arrests in upper income, white neighborhoods are nearly twice as likely to get cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) than people who collapse in low-income, black neighborhoods.

"If you drop in a neighborhood that is 80 percent white with a median income over $40,000 a year, you have a 55 percent chance of getting CPR," said study author Comilla Sasson, MD, an emergency room physician at the University of Colorado Hospital. "If you drop in a poor, black neighborhood you have a 35 percent chance. Life or death can literally be determined by what side of the street you drop on."

The study was published October 24 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Sasson, an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, analyzed data from 14,225 patients who suffered cardiac arrests in 29 cities from 2005-2009. She and her colleagues used census data to determine which neighborhood the event took place in, its racial make-up and median household income. Low-income was considered at or below $40,000 a year.

"We found a direct relationship between the median household income and racial composition of a neighborhood and the probability that a person whose heart had stopped would have a bystander perform CPR," the study said. "This association was most apparent in low-income black neighborhoods where the odds of receiving bystander- initiated CPR were approximately 50 percent lower than in high-income, nonblack neighborhoods."

A number of reasons were identified for this disparity. One is the cost of CPR training. Another is a lack of outreach to minority neighborhoods by organizations that promote CPR. And there are also language barriers and cultural issues surrounding the learning and performance of CPR.

Part of the study involved conducting focus groups in poor neighborhoods. In one area of Columbus, OH residents had median incomes of $20,000.

"If they paid $250 for a CPR class you are talking about 15 percent of their salary," Sasson said. "When you look at the competing economic interests -- am I going to eat tonight or attend a CPR class? -- the answer is obvious."

Yet the consequences are also obvious.

According to the study, there are 300,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year with survival rates that vary wildly from 0.2 percent in Detroit to 16 percent in Seattle. The difference can be explained in large part to intervention with CPR.

"For every 20 who get CPR you get one life saved," Sasson said. "So you are talking about thousands of lives being saved here."

The problem isn't only about income. Even in wealthier black neighborhoods, those who had cardiac arrest were 23 percent less likely to receive CPR than in high-income nonblack neighborhoods.

And the study showed that regardless of the neighborhood where a cardiac arrest occurs, blacks and Hispanics were 30 percent less likely than whites to receive CPR from a bystander.

"This suggests that, neighborhood effects, though important, do not fully account for observed racial differences," the study said.

Sasson called for more targeted, low-cost CPR training efforts based on the income and racial composition of neighborhoods. She is also working on creating public health programs aimed at increasing bystander-given CPR in specific communities.

As a doctor who once practiced in a level one trauma center in Atlanta, Sasson has witnessed first-hand the human toll of this inequity.

"I would see African-Americans coming in and dying from cardiac arrests after having laid there for 10 minutes with no one delivering CPR," she said. "There is no reason in 2012 that this kind of disparity exists -- that you live or die depending on what side of the street you drop on. It is simply unacceptable."

Capella 3rd-qtr profit drops as enrollments shrink

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Capella Education's third-quarter net income slid 49 percent as the online education company's student enrollments declined 2.1 percent.

The owner of Capella University also predicted fourth-quarter revenue Tuesday that fell short of analyst expectations, as it expects enrollments from October through December to drop 4 to 5 percent. While the company said that it sees signs of stabilization, with new enrollments in the July-September quarter up 10.5 percent, that figure is expected to be flat in the current quarter.

After climbing early in the recession as job-seekers tried to beef up their skills, enrollments have dropped significantly at for-profit schools like Capella. That is in part because the Obama administration enacted new regulations that require schools to meet certain performance targets aimed at making sure students can find jobs and pay off their debt following graduation, or risk losing access to federal student loans. Federal financial aid makes up the bulk of for-profit schools' revenue.

In the July-September quarter, Capella earned $5.1 million, or 39 cents per share, in the July-September quarter. That's down from $9.9 million, or 66 cents per share, during the same period a year earlier.

Analysts expected still-lower earnings of 28 cents per share, according to a FactSet poll.

Revenue fell 3 percent to $99.3 million from $102.3 million. Wall Street's forecast was $98.4 million.

Capella Education Co.'s total enrollments on Sept. 30 came to 34,989.

The Minneapolis company predicts fourth-quarter revenue will fall 3.5 to 4.5 percent, suggesting revenue of $105 million to $106.1 million. Analysts expect revenue of $108.1 million

Capella also expects its profitability to decline as it spends more on "learner success initiatives" and enrollments drop.

Does night work increase risk for prostate cancer? ? THE "NEW ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

According to a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology, a history of working night shifts may be associated with a large increase in risk for prostate cancer.

This new study by Parent and her colleagues at the University of Quebec used data from a population-based, case-control study carried out in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, between 1979 and 1985, which collected job histories, including work hours, from 3,137 males with incident cancer at one of 11 anatomic sites and from 512 controls.

Here are the core findings of this study:

  • Compared with men who never worked at night, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the men who ever worked at night were
    • 1.76 for lung cancer
    • 2.03 for colon cancer
    • 1.74 for bladder cancer
    • 2.77 for prostate cancer
    • 2.09 for rectal cancer
    • 2.27 for pancreatic cancer
    • 2.31 for non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma
  • Equivocal evidence or no evidence was observed for several other forms of cancer.
  • There was no evidence of increasing risk with increasing duration of night work.

Parent et al. conclude that ?? night work may increase cancer risk at several sites among men.?

The bottom line is that if this association can actually be demonstrated in other ways, then it may be prostate cancer that is the greatest cancer risk for men who have a history of night work. However, it is also clear that these data need to be validated in other ways before any conclusions are drawn about this potential association between night work and risk for cancer.

Earthquake predictions and a triumph of scientific illiteracy in an Italian court

An Italian court sentenced scientists to jail time for not having a functioning crystal ball ahead of the 2009 earthquake in L'Aquila. The arguments of science and reason fell on deaf ears.

An Italian court on Monday convicted seven scientists and experts of manslaughter for failing to adequately warn citizens before an earthquake struck central Italy in 2009, killing more than 300 people.

Today, a court in the central Italian city of L'Aquila, 380 years after that miscarriage of justice, sentenced six scientists and a government bureaucrat to six years in jail on manslaughter charges for their failure to predict a 2009 earthquake that left more than 300 people dead.

This headline isn't the sort of thing that's generally expected from Italy anymore. The church quietly abandoned its objections to heliocentrism in the early years of the 18th century, and by the early 19th, had fully accepted the scientific facts.

Woman who jumped overboard from cruise ship rescued

20 hrs.

A Carnival cruise ship passenger who was spotted jumping overboard was rescued Sunday, company officials said.

The 29-year-old woman was aboard the Carnival Destiny, which had left the Port of Miami on Saturday, when she was witnessed jumping overboard around 12:10 a.m., according to a statement from the company.

The ship immediately began search and rescue operations and located the woman. She was brought on board and treated at the ship's medical center.

Ship physicians determined the woman needed further treatment at a shoreside facility and the Destiny deviated its course to Key West instead of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

The ship, which is on a five-day Caribbean cruise, is scheduled to return on Thursday.

Markets are weighed down by disappointing earnings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Investors seemed to be in a holding pattern Monday, unwilling to send the market definitively up or down. Indexes hopped between small gains and losses and investors waited for clarity on third-quarter earnings and the presidential election.

Developments that could move the market are coming soon. Yahoo, a proxy for how the tech industry is doing, will report earnings after the market closes. Bellwether companies like Apple and Procter & Gamble report later this week. The government releases its report on third-quarter economic growth on Friday. And two weeks from now, the U.S. holds its presidential election.

"It's very quiet out there," said David Katz, principal and senior portfolio strategist at WeiserMazars Wealth Advisors in New York. "A lot of that is just the election, or Monday night football ? one or the other."

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 dipped when the market opened, then struggled for direction. The moves were small.

The Dow was down 14 points to 13,324 at noon. The S&P 500 was down two at 1,431 and the Nasdaq composite index inched up six points to 3,012.

Company earnings signaled that the economy isn't at full bore, though investors' reactions were mixed.

Hasbro, the toymaker behind brands like My Little Pony and Transformers, said that sales for boys and preschool were less than it had hoped. But the company's results beat analysts' expectations, and the stock inched up 24 cents to $39.29.

Clothing maker VF Corp., whose brands include The North Face and Wrangler, slipped after its revenue fell short of analysts' estimates. The stock fell $5.62 to $161.15

Caterpillar, the world's largest construction and mining equipment company, cut its profit and revenue predictions for the year, saying the global economy is weaker than it previously thought. But profit and revenue both increased, and the stock rose 99 cents to $84.85.

SunTrust Banks slipped after announcing its quarterly results. Earnings were sharply higher, but that was largely because the bank sold shares it owned in Coca-Cola. The Atlanta-based bank wrestled with higher expenses as well as low interest rates, which can crimp the profit banks make from lending out money.

The markets just got through the first peak week of third-quarter earnings reports. On Friday, disappointing results from Microsoft, General Electric and McDonald's surprised traders and pushed U.S. stocks lower.

While most companies have pulled in better-than-expected earnings, investors now are more interested in how they're doing on revenue. Revenue can give a more accurate picture of how a company is performing, because earnings can vary widely on items like accounting charges and cost-cutting.

Katz described companies' third-quarter revenue results as "fair" and said the U.S. economy is "slow and steady."

"It is at a snail's pace," he said. "But it's certainly better than what we had."

Of the roughly 100 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported third-quarter results so far, 70 percent have beat analysts' estimates for earnings, according to John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet. But only 42 percent have beat estimates for revenue. That's the lowest since the first quarter of 2009, when the stock market hit its Great Recession lows.

Ancestry.com, the genealogy website, jumped after announcing it will be bought by European private equity firms. The stock popped $2.28 to $31.46. The buyers had offered $32 per share.

In other trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.80 percent from 1.76 percent late Friday. The euro was worth $1.30, little changed from Friday, and energy prices fell slightly. Crude oil fell 66 cents to $89.78 a barrel in New York.

Fidel Castro alive and well: Chavez aide

HAVANA (Reuters) - Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro is alive and well, according to Elias Jaua, a former Venezuelan vice president who says he met with Castro over the weekend.

Squelching rumors that Castro was at death's door, Jaua, a key aide to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, on Sunday showed reporters pictures of the Saturday meeting and said Castro, 86, was in good health and lucid.

Jaua, who is running for governor in Venezuela's contested state of Miranda, said Castro accompanied him to Havana's famed Hotel National early on Saturday evening after their meeting. He then chatted briefly with the hotel's general manager, Antonio Martinez Rodriguez, before departing.

Castro's long absence from the public eye has fueled blogger and Twitter rumors for weeks that he was dead or near dying.

"Yes, he was here yesterday, the same old Fidel with his beard and pink cheeks. He was fine," Martinez told Reuters on Sunday.

Castro was reportedly in a modified Mercedes gray van and did not leave the vehicle.

Apart from the comments by Jaua and Martinez, and the pictures shown to the media, there was no independent confirmation that anyone had actually seen the former leader.

After resigning the presidency in 2008, Fidel Castro regularly wrote columns for the state press, but has not published one since June 19, and his last few were widely viewed as so oddball that they raised questions about his mental state.

Only his Twitter account has been active but all the tweets are simply links in the press. Twitter accounts in the name of politicians and other people in the public eye are often run largely by their aides.

His last known public appearance was in March when he met briefly with Pope Benedict during his visit to the Communist island. Although he appeared mentally sharp, he had trouble walking and was badly stooped.

Chavez, a close friend and ally, has said on several occasions that Castro is well, and last week son Alex Castro said his father was exercising and doing fine.

A letter from Castro congratulating a Havana medical institute on its 50th anniversary was splashed across the front pages of Cuban newspapers on Thursday in his first appearance in print in four months.

The letter and an accompanying story, which took up the entire first page of the Communist Party newspaper Granma, appeared to be an attempt to dampen rumors about his health.

However, the letter, published with Castro's signature and dated October 17, did little to end speculation over his health, many questioning its authenticity.

Why these sisters are voting 'No' on same-sex marriage ? Politics ...

MEXICO, Maine ? Their deep belief in God and Christian teachings is being boiled down to sound bites by the ?mainstream media,? and they say the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage in Maine is being dominated by those who support the idea.

That?s how Carol Daigle and her sisters, Valerie Litalien and Cindy Terrill, feel about Question 1 on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Deeply devoted to their religions ? Litalien is Catholic; Terrill and Daigle are Baptist ? the sisters sat together in the front pew of Daigle?s church Friday and spoke passionately about their beliefs and fears.

They are coming out publicly to say they oppose same-sex marriage, but they worry they will be cast as being hateful or bigoted.

?If this is the age of tolerance,? Daigle said, ?why aren?t we being heard? We are not threatening to harm anybody. We are not saying you should be in jail for any of this, but what we are saying is this degrades the foundation of the family and society, promotes diseases and dysfunction and tears down the person?s dignity.?

Daigle said she wanted to meet in her church and sit where she could see the cross behind the pulpit. Litalien had a rosary wrapped around one hand. She said she leans on her faith, prays on a regular basis and knows that God meant for men and women to be together in marriage, not same-sex couples.

?When people say they don?t see how it?s wrong, I say to them if you can show me in the Bible where God says it?s right, then I will agree with you,? Terrill said.

The sisters said that as much as they hear that gays and lesbians are discriminated against, it feels now that those who oppose same-sex marriage are the ones being treated with bias. Terrill said she lost a job over her views, and Litalien worries about saying where she lives for fear of retaliation.

?We are now the ones being forced into the shadows,? Daigle said. She said Maine voters decided the issue once when a citizen referendum overturned state legislation legalizing same-sex marriage.

?So, why are we doing this again?? Daigle asked. ?We didn?t bring this to them; they brought it to us. No means no.?

Many simply don?t dare to speak up for fear of being labeled hateful, Daigle said.

?Do you know how much courage it takes to go out in front of people and put up signs not to redefine marriage?? she asked. ?How much courage it takes to put it on the back of your car? You could have your windows broken.?

They know some in the Christian Civic League who have applied for and been granted concealed weapon permits because they faced death threats and other types of harassment.

?I?m not going to say all of them, but there is a radical segment ? just like someone can say it?s radical Muslims, there?s only a section of them ? there?s a radical segment of pro same-sex people that are extremely radical, and they will stop at nothing to get what they want,? Daigle said. ?Those are the ones that are forcing us into the shadows.?

The sisters say they want people to know they don?t hate gay people.

Litalien told a story of how a gay couple she knew helped her find a religious film for her grandson after the child was recovering from an illness that left him near death.

?We love them as a person, but we don?t have to agree with their lifestyle; but we love them as a person,? Litalien said.

She, Terrill and Daigle are among seven siblings including two other sisters and two brothers. They said the whole family was raised going to church. Although they now practice different versions of Christianity, they said they all believe in the same God.

?We are crying foul because anyone who disapproves of the lifestyle is being told they hate (gays and lesbians),? Litalien said. ?We are Christians and we are commanded to love. And my heart breaks for them being encouraged to stay in a harmful lifestyle that degrades the body and corrupts the soul. But we have no right to hate them and no right to tell them what they can and cannot do, but on that same note, we don?t have to accept same-sex marriage as normal and natural.?

Barry Zito's gem cuts Giants' NLCS deficit to 3-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Offense has a lot to do with San Francisco's streak of 13 consecutive victories when Barry Zito is on the mound, given they're averaging more than six runs.

In Game 5 of the NL championship series Friday night, with their season on the line, they didn't need all that production. Not with the pitcher they thought they signed a half-dozen years ago showing up in shutdown form.

Zito dominated into the eighth inning of a 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals that sent the best-of-seven series back to San Francisco. The Giants cut their series deficit to 3-2 heading into Game 6 on Sunday night, with Ryan Vogelsong set to face Chris Carpenter for the second time in the series.

"We needed that kind of performance from him because there is no tomorrow for us," second baseman Marco Scutaro said. "We just needed to get back home."

The defending-champion Cardinals still have two chances to make it to back-to-back World Series as a wild card.

"It should be another battle," St. Louis third baseman David Freese said. "San Francisco is a great city, but I wish we weren't going back."

The 34-year-old Zito looked like the pitcher who won 23 games and the 2002 AL Cy Young with the Athletics. He retired 11 batters in a row at one stretch while scattering six hits with six strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings.

Giants catcher Buster Posey twice tapped Zito on the chest when he was pulled in the eighth. It was Zito's fifth postseason win but first since 2006, shortly before he left the A's and signed a $126 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco.

"This is definitely it for me," Zito said. "Coming here, really doing it in a Giants uniform. A lot of people were saying stuff about my A's days. And for me, the most important thing is doing everything for San Francisco right now."

Zito was left off the postseason roster when the Giants won the 2010 World Series because he had pitched so ineffectively.

"Well, you know, it was certainly a huge blow just personally to be left off that roster," Zito said. "But you've got to be professional, you can't pout and such like that.

"I worked on a lot of things that offseason, came back stronger for it, I think."

Zito's 15-8 record this year was his first winning mark since joining the Giants. He started Game 4 of the division series against the Reds earlier in this year's playoffs and lasted only 2 2-3 innings.

"He's been through a lot, I know," manager Bruce Bochy said. "But this guy, he is some kind of tough. He put on quite a show."

The Cardinals might have thrown away a chance to clinch a second straight World Series trip. Pitcher Lance Lynn's toss on a possible forceout deflected off the second base bag, paving the way for the Giants' four-run fourth.

Lynn was trying to turn the front end of a double play.

"I turned to throw it and I just threw it in the ground," Lynn said. "Just a bad play. You make a good throw there and we are out of the inning. It was one of those times where I just short-armed it a little bit."

Pablo Sandoval homered for the second straight night and Zito made an extremely rare offensive contribution with a perfectly executed bunt for an RBI single.

Giants defenders made several nice plays behind Zito, including a juggling catch in right by Hunter Pence and a spectacular sliding stop by Scutaro to rob pinch hitter Shane Robinson on consecutive at-bats.

"They were all huge," Zito said.

Once again this postseason, the Giants benefited from a big error.

Needing three straight wins at Cincinnati to avoid elimination in the division series, San Francisco began its comeback on a bobble by third baseman Scott Rolen in the 10th inning that gave the Giants the go-ahead run in Game 3.

The Giants improved to 4-2 on the road this postseason and have won Zito's last 13 starts, with the last setback on Aug. 2. They're averaging more than six runs during the streak, although the lefty didn't need much help in this one.

Lynn, an 18-game winner in his first year in the rotation, failed to make it out of the fourth for the second time in the series.

The Cardinals are seeking consecutive pennants for the first time since 1967-68, and trying to advance for the second year in a row as a wild-card entry. One more win would set up a rematch of the 2006 World Series against the Tigers, which the Cardinals took in five games.

Lynn struck out five of the first 10 batters, sailing through the first three innings with no balls hit out of the infield. His wild throw to second proved his undoing.

The Giants had runners on first and second with one out when Lynn gloved a tapper by Pence, wheeled and threw while Kozma hustled to second. Lynn's throw wound up in shallow right field and Scutaro scored without a play from second.

Eighth-place hitter Brandon Crawford singled up the middle with the bases loaded on a full count with two outs as Lynn just missed with a kick save for two more runs. Zito, who has just 30 hits in 310 at-bats in the regular season with no extra-base hits and nine RBIs, laid down a perfect bunt for a fourth run.

Lynn has allowed four runs in both of his NLCS starts, although all four were unearned in Game 5.

NOTES: Standing room attendance for Game 5 was 47,075, a franchise-best for league championship play, topping the previous best in Game 4 by 13. ... Longtime Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon bounced a ceremonial first pitch from in front of the mound to Lou Brock, teammates on the last St. Louis team to go to consecutive World Series in 1967 and '68. ... Cardinals rookie RHP Trevor Rosenthal struck out four in two scoreless innings. He has fanned 11 in 6 2-3 scoreless innings in the postseason while allowing just one hit. ... The Cardinals were shut out for the first time since Game 4 of the 2011 World Series, a 4-0 loss at Texas. ... Freese doubled in the second and has gotten at least one hit in all of his 14 postseason starts at home. It's the third-longest home hitting streak to start a postseason career.

Syria: Explosion in Damascus kills at least 10

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? An explosion hit the Old City of Damascus on Sunday, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens of other civilians, Syrian activists said. It came as President Bashar Assad discussed the civil war in his country with visiting U.N. peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.

The blast targeted a police station in the Bab Touma neighborhood, a Syrian official said, insisting on anonymity because he is not allowed to make press statements.

Bab Touma, a popular attraction for shoppers, is inhabited mostly by members of Syria's Christian minority.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death toll. It said it was not immediately clear if the victims were civilians or policemen. But it described the blast as "strong" and said ambulances and police cars were rushing to the area.

No other details were immediately available.

Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, met with Assad in another part of the capital. Brahimi has appealed for a truce between Assad's forces and rebels for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26.

Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire, which he hopes will pave the way for a longer-term truce.

A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea, but neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on.

Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Saturday. A Foreign Ministry statement released after the meeting did not mention the proposed truce, but said the two men discussed "objective and rational circumstances to stop the violence from any side in order to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians."

Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed to and then promptly violated internationally brokered cease-fires in the past, and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.

Tweetbot for Mac developer Todd Thomas and designer Mark Jardine talk process, production, and pricing

Tweetbot for Mac officially hits the Mac App Store today, and thanks to Tweetbot for iOS developer Paul Haddad simultaneously ducking behind him, and throwing him in front of the camera, I had a chance to chat with Tweetbot for Mac developer Todd Thomas about the newest Tapbots creation, and their first for OS X.

We covered everything from the impetuous for Tweetbot for Mac, to the development process, to the price point and the realities of living -- and selling -- in a post-restricted user token world.

To round things out, and get a little more clarity on the design side, I also had a chance to catch up with Tapbots' Mark Jardine over old-school text.

On the Tweetbot -- and Tapbots in general -- aesthetic, which has been iOS only until now, and what it was like translating that to the Mac:

One of my primary goals of Tweetbot for Mac was to keep the same aesthetic going throughout while still feeling like a Mac app. I'm not sure I succeeded, but I tried my best. It's kind of funny because Tapbots started out with very experimental UI ideas and have always been purposefully over-the-edge so to speak. I know it's definitely not for everyone, but it's been a very fun experience. It worked out really well for our utility apps, but pushing our look and feel onto a Twitter client was a huge risk. I'm well aware that many find it too busy, but this is after all a Tapbots app and the brand must live on through each app we do under this company. The funny thing is my design work is traditionally very minimalistic. I'd say to the point of being a bit bland. So it always makes me chuckle when people associate this look with my personal style. I guess I should take that as a compliment to my brand consistency?

Anyways, back to Tweetbot for Mac. Some early designs started out with the light-colored chrome familiar to most Mac apps. But it just didn't feel like Tweetbot to me. One of the big issues with going with a dark interface is by default, OSX apps look horrible with it. Look at Apple's Reminders app over a light background for example. The edges become muddy because the 1px app border just isn't dark enough. So we ended up hacking a few things together to get it to look right. There are a few other issues as a result, but we are working through them.

I knew from the very beginning that I would be taking the iPad app's navigation interface and applying it on the Mac. I think that ties the apps together well. Everything else was really a mix between what worked on the iPhone and what worked on the iPad. If something didn't work right, we'd rethink it all.

The biggest challenge was definitely solving all the problems that come up with this new (to me at least) platform altogether. When I design for the iPad, I miss all the constraints of the iPhone. When I design for the Mac, I miss the constraints of iOS. Having strict boundaries gives me time to focus on ever little detail. The scope of the UI and experience of apps on the Mac is just really large...especially when you start going custom with the UI. This app took us a year to develop and I still feel like there's still so much more to improve. It will get better though and I've learned a lot from this experience.

On the gesture shortcuts in iOS and moving those over to the Mac:

I'll be honest with you. It was Paul and Todd who spent most of the time figuring out the gestures and keyboard shortcuts. I just made sure nothing felt really out of place. Apple's trackpads/magic mice definitely helps make the transition from iOS to Mac a bit smoother.

The hardest decision related to input device differences was with the tweet drawer. Originally we planned on having our signature tweet drawer in the Mac app. But after a few prototypes we quickly learned that it just didn't feel right at all on the Mac. We tried a bunch of different things and ended up settling with the hover action we have now. I'm still not quite sure it's the best solution, but that's the conclusion we ended up with.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out our full Tweetbot for Mac review, and if you like what you see, grab the app via the link below.

Google Android Event - Business Insider

Google just sent out invites to the press for an Android-themed event in New York.

The announcement will likely be for Google's new Nexus phone, which is rumored to be made by LG. It's also possible Google will team up with other hardware manufacturers to make Nexus devices this year. The LG Nexus is said to be a variant of the LG Optimus G, which recently launched.

Finally, there are rumors Google will offer a new Nexus 7 model with 32 GB. The entry-level 16 GB Nexus 7 could also drop to $99 from $199.

Android Boss Andy Rubin is also scheduled to speak at AllThingsD's mobile conference following Google's press conference. We're guessing he'll use that opportunity to show off the new Android hardware.

Even more interesting, Microsoft is holding a press conference the same day to announce the final consumer-facing features for its next mobile operating system Windows Phone 8.

How Does the Latest ITIL Update Impact Your Business - SAManage

The 2011 ITIL update was designed to resolve inconsistencies in documentation and to fix errors. Many of the updates have to do with clarity and completeness, and also address suggestions that were submitted by the training community for making ITIL easier to teach. The overall goal was to make sure that all concepts were explained clearly and concisely. Many of the changes in the 2011 update resulted from direct feedback from those who use ITIL practices and train from it.

The latest ITIL update is designed to benefit entire businesses, rather than just IT departments.

The original principles from ITIL 2007 are preserved due to an effort to work with mentors and advisers who worked on either the 2007 edition or the 2007 ITIL glossary.

What Was Updated?

No completely new concepts were added in the update, but the changes do go beyond cosmetic. Some processes are described in more detail, and many clarifications were introduced. Here are some of the main updates:

  • Changes in Service Strategy:?Strategy Management for IT Services and Business Relationship Management processes were introduced, as was Strategy Management for IT Services.
  • Service Portfolio Management:?It now covers activities related to managing the Service Portfolio.
  • Demand Management:?It?s no longer part of Capacity Management.
  • Business Relationship Management:?It was introduced as a new process.
  • Design Coordination:?Introduced as a process.
  • Service Level Management:?It no longer includes coordinating activities.
  • Service Operation:?This now incorporates changes in event management, incident management, access management, problem management and request fulfillment, among others.
  • Incident Management Process:?This includes changes for identifying, logging, categorizing, prioritizing, escalation, investigation, resolution, and closure of incidents.
  • Continual Service Improvements to Incident Management:?Automatic rules like assignment rules and inactivity monitors are reassigned for each service desk?s needs.

ITIL Update Benefits to Business

The ITIL updates were designed to benefit the business side of the operations with ITIL-guided service desks, too. The ITIL framework provides a good foundation for management of requests, problems, incidents, and change ? whether in the IT department or elsewhere.

Other departments in organizations ? such as human resources and procurement ? are looking to implement ITIL-type processes in their operations as well. As just one example, change management database systems can be used to chart business best practices and processes, as well as best practices and processes for IT.

And that makes for happier users.
Why the Latest ITIL Update is Relevant to Your Business

ITIL gives businesses a strong framework for IT service management by ensuring that processes are followed and documented so that causes of problems like data center outages can be traced and diagnosed more efficiently. Any data center can be run within an ITIL framework to reduce risks and manage processes. ITIL works to orchestrate technology, processes, and people to reduce risks, aid in problem solving, and improve overall organizational efficiency.

Within an ITIL framework, your?service desk software?can do its utmost to keep your company?s IT assets accounted for and running the way they?re supposed to. Cloud-based service desk software fits in perfectly with your ITIL best practices, because it ensures that everyone is consistently using the latest version and that upgrades don?t disrupt normal functioning and productivity.
