HBT: Yankees re-sign Ichiro to one-year deal

UPDATE: Despite what?Nikkan Sports is reporting, many are now saying that there is no deal in place between Ichiro and the Yankees. ?Joel Sherman just went so far as to say that a deal has not yet been seriously discussed.

So, yeah, stand by for further updates.

9:20 AM: It?s ?sign old guys day? in the Bronx. First was Andy Pettitte and now it?s Ichiro:

It felt weird to see Ichiro in anything but a Seattle Mariners? uniform, but he took to Yankee pinstripes quite nicely after last season?s trade,?hitting .322 with five home runs and a .794 OPS after coming over from the Mariners in July.

Ichiro is a mere three months younger than your creaky, grumpy and bald blogger here, but he still has game. Not the $17 million worth of game he was paid for in 2012, but at $5 million keeping him in New York makes a heck of a lot of sense.

Bucks County Residents Welcome Winter Weather

.

By Jericka Duncan

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (CBS) ? A four-wheeler with a plow attached helped to remove snow off the sidewalks in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

While some people have welcomed fall with a smile, accepting winter with open arms may not be as easy.

?This is what we have to look forward to the next couple months,? said one woman.

At Nonno?s coffee shop, customers are cozy, ordering hot drinks, watching the snow fall from inside.

?It?s nice watching traffic and relaxing,? said Bill Dunn of Doylestown.

For the people, children imparticular, who love this type of weather, playing in the snow never gets old. Five-year-old Mackenzie Maroney of Seattle,Washington built a snowman at her grandfather?s house and begged him to take her?sledding?while she?s in town.

Boy Meets Boy, Jermyn Street Theatre, London

Published Wednesday 28 November 2012 at 12:53 by Paul Vale

Written in 1975, Boy Meets Boy is a sparkling musical comedy set against the backdrop of the abdication crisis in pre-war Britain. The big difference is that this is an alternative 1936, where gay relationships are perfectly acceptable and high society is quivering with excitement at the impending nuptials of Boston millionaire Clarence Cutler and British aristocrat Guy Rose. It?s a bizarre leap to take but writers Bill Solly and Donald Ward take it with impeccable flair, crafting an exquisite pastiche that manages at turns to be both cheerfully sentimental yet vaguely subversive. Solly?s music and witty lyrics pay affectionate homage to the likes of Porter and Berlin while the book, co-written with Ward manages in one fell swoop to put the word ?gay? back into the term ?gay musical comedy?.

Stephen Ashfield brings a sense of worldly realism to the commitment-phobic journalist, Casey O?Brien, breaking as many hearts as he does news stories. O?Brien career as a lothario is finally stalled by Craig Fletcher?s shy, sensitive Guy Rose, a beauty hidden behind geeky spectacles and bad hair. Ashfield and Fletcher make an adorable couple, pulling off the humour of the hilarious It?s A Boy?s Life at the same time as developing a romantic storyline that is as sentimental as it is satisfying. Beyond the romance there is the louche comic delivery of Ben Kavanagh, as jilted groom Clarence Cutler, providing many of the laugh-out-loud moments throughout the evening and a thoroughly committed ensemble, bringing colour and vivacity to Solly and Ward?s screwball comedy.

Director Gene David Kirk?s lucid direction, his swansong as artistic director for this venue, is complemented by Lee Proud?s bold choreography that mirrors both the romance and the wit of the piece. Boy Meets Boy might not be to everybody?s taste, but there is an unfailing sense of optimism about this show that makes it one of the most pertinent revivals of the year.

Apple's ultra-thin iMac to become available on Nov. 30

1 hr.

Apple announced an upcoming?update to its popular iMac desktop computer line in October, but on Tuesday the Cupertino-based company finally confirmed that the 21.5-inch version of the?new, ultra-thin desktop will be available on Nov. 30.?

"Isn't it amazing how something new makes the previous generation instantly look old?" asked?Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, when he first?unveiled what a press release calls "the most advanced desktop Apple has ever made."?The new iMac looks quite similar to the previous generation from the front, but from the side, it is incredibly clear that the desktop has undergone a significant redesign: It has an edge that's a mere 5 millimeters thin.?There is, of course, a bit of a bulge in the middle of the computer's back, for the sake of some internal components, but it still has about 40 percent less internal volume than its older siblings and weighs about eight pounds less, as NBC News' contributor Joel Johnson pointed out when we first heard about the new iMac.

The new iMac is offered in 21.5-inch and 27-inch versions, which start at $1,300 and $1,800, respectively. The new desktops have displays with 75 percent less reflection than the prior generation and a Fusion Drive option (which combines a standard hard drive and a flash-based one to offer up to 60 percent faster performance).

While the 21.5-inch version of the new iMac will begin arriving in customers' homes on Nov. 30, its?27-inch counterpart won't begin shipping until December, according to a press release issued by Apple.

(AP) ? The hum of massive mobile generators, boilers and pumps emerges blocks from Manhattan's Financial District and turns into a steady din south of Wall Street ? the now-familiar sound of an area laboring to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

Other parts of the city have gotten mayoral visits and media attention after the Oct. 29 storm killed dozens of residents and tore apart homes in coastal neighborhoods. Less obvious were the millions upon million gallons of sea water that wreaked havoc on subterranean electrical panels and other internal infrastructure throughout lower Manhattan, making them unusable even after power was restored to the area.

"There were waves on Wall Street, and it all ended up here," Mike Lahm, a building engineer who rode out the storm at 120 Wall Street, said during a recent tour of the skyscraper's basement.

Nearly a month later, some of the high-rises that are home to investment banks, large law firms and luxury apartments have bounced back quickly. But others buildings remain eerily dark and vacant.

Landlords have warned full power won't be back for weeks, if not months, leaving businesses and residents displaced and uncertain about when ? and even whether ? they'll return. JP Morgan Chase, the Daily News and the American Civil Liberties Union are among tenants still operating in satellite locations after getting washed out of their headquarters in lower Manhattan.

Heavy flooding also hit a complex of multimillion-dollar apartments along the Hudson River, whose well-heeled owners ? reportedly including Gwyneth Paltrow and Meryl Streep ? could quietly retreat to second or third homes on higher and drier ground.

"What you're looking at here is a mass exodus," downtown resident Gail Strum said as she retrieved some files and other belongings from a rental apartment building that's still without power. "It feels like there's no coming back."

On paper, Strum's assessment sounds too pessimistic. The city Buildings Department declared only nine buildings in lower Manhattan unsafe because of structural damage from the storm, and the power company, Consolidated Edison, says all buildings citywide had access to electricity and steam power by Nov. 15.

A real estate consulting firm that's tracking the lower Manhattan recovery, Jones Lang LaSalle, says 49 of the 183 office buildings in the business district were closed because of mechanical failures. By the latest count, at least half were back in full operation, even if it has meant relying on temporary power. More are expected to follow.

"We see that as a very healthy pace," said John Wheeler, a Jones Lang LaSalle executive.

One success story was 120 Wall Street, a 600,000-square-foot, 34-story skyscraper built near the East River that's home to nonprofits such as the National Urban League, the United Negro College Fund and the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration.

Even before Sandy hit, landlord Silverstein Properties got ahead of a scramble for recovery resources by securing portable diesel generators each capable of providing 2 megawatts of power. Afterward, the building brought in its own fuel tanker from Pennsylvania ? and a security team from Florida to guard it ? so it could keep the generators going during the gas crunch.

Using a mix of generator power and restored Con Ed service, engineers had the elevators, lights and heat up and running by mid-November.

To the tenants, "It's as if the building's operating normally," said Jeremy Moss, a vice president with Silverstein Properties.

What tenants don't see in the bowels of 120 Wall Street is a thicket of temporary, exposed wiring that runs everywhere. The warning "LIVE WIRE. KEEP OUT" is spray-painted in red on the door of a room housing switches, fuses or circuit breakers after it was submerged. The air is clammy and musty ? "the smell of the East River," said Lahm, the building engineer.

Fearing the East River might one day try again to meet the Hudson, 120 Wall Street and other buildings are facing an even bigger, more expensive job: Moving critical infrastructure to higher floors or even roofs.

"We're going to need to relocate equipment so history doesn't repeat itself," Moss said.

Farther uptown, NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center had put generators on high floors where they could be protected in a flood. But they still suffered failures with Sandy, apparently because other critical components of the backup power system, such as fuel pumps and tanks, remained in basements just a block from the East River.

While 120 Wall Street enjoys a degree of normalcy, other newer and taller glass towers around it remain shut as teams of contractors and workers struggle to restore power, phone and other services. Tractor-trailers providing emergency services such as "microbial remediation" crowd the streets. Cabs are few.

Fire engines became a part of the mix on Friday with the report of a fire in the basement of another vacated office building at 55 Water St. ? the address for financial services company Standard & Poor's and the city Department of Transportation ? that left two dozen people suffering from smoke inhalation and sent four to a hospital. The cause wasn't immediately clear.

The lower Manhattan disarray has also reached the courtroom. Last week, a resident of a still-evacuated luxury high-rise filed a $35 million lawsuit against his condo board and management company, accusing them of "gross negligence" in the wake of Sandy.

The management company, Cooper Square Realty, fired back in a letter from its chief executive, David Kuperberg, claiming that contractors recruited from as far away as Wisconsin and Michigan have been working nonstop to tear out wet walls, carpeting and wallpaper to prevent mold; installing new generators; rebuilding a water pump; and mopping up residue left by oil-tainted salt water.

"While Cooper Square Reality did not cause the storm, the company is doing everything it can" to get people back in their homes, Kuperberg wrote.

The uncertainty also is evident at South Street Seaport, a cluster of early 19th-century mercantile buildings converted to retail shops and apartments. Usually teeming with tourists, the seaport remained a ghost town late last week, despite postcard-perfect weather.

Inside a shut-down brew pub still without lights, workers wearing masks and white jumpsuits scrubbed down the bar, floor and tables. Many businesses, including Ann Taylor, Body Shop and Guess outlets, were still boarded up with plywood.

Also shuttered was "Bodies ... The Exhibition," the show featuring dissected human cadavers that has been a fixture there since 2005. Its website says that due to "damage to our venue, we are closed until further notice."

Some seaport residents have electricity back but no heat or hot water. Liz McKenna, 54, who was living in a third-floor apartment overlooking the East River when a deluge filled the entire first floor with water, said she expects to be able to move back in a couple of weeks ? maybe.

"That's only a guess," she said as she picked up her mail. "Look around. Nobody really knows how bad it is down here. ... We've been ignored."

One of the few businesses to open its doors, Meade's bar and restaurant, had no customers at lunchtime.

"We're open, but who are we open for?" said 28-year-old bartender Nichole Osborne. "All of my regulars are displaced."

An etching on the front window, quoting Dylan Thomas, offered a glimmer of resolve: "Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Samsung shows off device stress testing in promo video

Samsung Stress Test

Its no secret that Samsung likes to use shiny, extremely flexible plastic materials for its devices. It can unfortunately lead to a device that feels somewhat "cheap" in the hand, but the tradeoff is some serious longevity when it comes to surviving every-day use. Some of us don't treat our phones very gently, and a device's ability to make it through a few bumps without breaking can be a feature for many.

Samsung has just released a video showing off various methods they use to stress test their devices, including mashing on a Galaxy Note 2 home button over 200,000 times, putting a device under simulated rain and even simulating sitting on devices repeatedly. Yes. It's a butt. Get over it. The video is narrated in Korean, but you'll enjoy the visuals nonetheless. You can skip along to about the 0:50 mark to get to where the good parts start. Take a gander after the break.

12 Most Relaxing Things to Do when there's no Internet

I?ve just returned from my annual vacation to the family cottage. When I tell people there is no cell phone coverage, no internet connection, no TV and not even very good radio coverage, most people think I?ve found the back door to heaven. For a social media consultant, however, going without internet for a week could be just the opposite.

I usually don?t have much trouble backing off my internet consumption for the week we?re away, but I admit I do have to travel up to the wifi caf? every couple of days to check on my client accounts and respond to emails. So, what does a web-addict do with all this newfound free time?

1. Take a nap

Chances are you?re sleep deprived. Depending on the study you read, adults need anywhere from six to 10 hours of sleep per night. I?m leaning more towards six, so I always get a few extra zzzzz?s on vacation.

2. Sit on the deck and watch the waves

Or the clouds, flowers, birds, animals? whatever you?ve got. Enjoy nature for a while.

3. Read a book

Whether you like a good old fashioned hard cover novel, the Kindle, or an audio book, having no internet connection is the perfect time to catch up on something you?ve been meaning to read. I quite enjoyed listening to an audio book while I sat and watched the waves from my deck. Then I picked up the hard cover I had brought with me. Two mindless reads in one week.

4. Write a blog post

Pretty clear that I have spent some of my vacation doing work. I think that?s the downfall of the entrepreneur? can you ever really?leave work? I always knock off a couple of blog posts while I?m away. Sometimes they are book reviews (if my books are business related), sometimes they?re about what to do when there?s no internet. Either way, I feel a bit more relaxed when I know there are a couple of posts waiting to be published when I get back. Takes a bit of the pressure off when I?m trying to get caught up.

5. Play a game

Lucky for me there are a bunch of people here at the cottage. Any time you want to play a game, there?s someone to play with. There?s nothing as relaxing as taking out your stress on the Scrabble board, or landing in a fit of the giggles with your family.

6. Go to the beach

Ok, ok? so the land-locked readers might have a harder time with this one. Our cottage happens to be in the Bay of Fundy with the highest tides in the world. Twice a day we have a huge beach on which to walk, fly kites or build sand castles.

7. Try a new coffee shop

This one is easy to do if you?re away from home. Go. Sit. Try a new blend and a decadent dessert while you?re there.

8. Organize your computer files

Yes, I?m serious! If you?ve been putting off getting your computer organized, take the time to do it now. If you got this far down on the list, really, what else do you have to do? And getting organized will definitely help you feel less stressed.

9. Sudoku

If Word Find and crossword isn?t your thing, check out the Sudoku puzzles in your local paper (or buy a book of them). These logic puzzles are a great way to keep your synapses firing.

10. Go for a walk

When was the last time you went for a walk? Not a power walk. Not a run. Just a walk to enjoy your natural surroundings? Go out and focus on nature for awhile. You might be amazed at what you notice. I?m sitting in the middle of a haven for Swallowtail and Monarch butterflies ? that?s fun!

11. Watch a movie

My kids use this one more than I do. Download, borrow, beg or steal, but take a couple of movies with you on your vacation. When everyone goes to bed early here I just pop in my ear buds and watch a movie.

12. Get back at that hobby

It?s been months since I touched my favorite hobby. If I were at home without internet I might actually be inspired to try making a card to send to someone. Alas, I?m at the family cottage and my dining room full of craft supplies is six hours away.

Hmmm. I don?t know about you, but now I don?t feel quite so bored without my internet connection. I guess I?ve been quite busy afterall this week, since I?ve done 11 out of the 12 things I?ve listed.

Oh, yes, and there is a 13th item I could list, but I?m at a shared, FAMILY cottage. And without internet I couldn?t ask if this was a FAMILY friendly blog, so I wasn?t sure if I should mention sex. Oops.

Cyber Monday at Consumer Crafts! | Wee Share

So... it's that crazy shopping time of the year!? Did any of you head out to do any Black Friday shopping?? This is actually the first time in five years I have stayed home.? I needed absolutely nothing and there are no good craft stores nearby, so I decided to get some much needed sleep.

I am, however, taking advantage of the awesome deals online.? I bought some PDF sewing patterns as well as a few extra gifts for my daughter.? Plus, I am pretty certain my husband might have used that discount code I shared with him to purchase a fun crafty machine for me... we'll see!

Today, I have been browsing over at ConsumerCrafts.com because it's the last day of their Doorbuster Deals.? Plus, the ENTIRE site is 30% off!? I can always use more craft supplies {can't we all?} and I have my eye on several of their deals:

Yes... I have a Cricut, but I have been wanting one of these Silhouette Cameo machines for quite a while.? They don't require cartridges at all. Instead, simply connect the Silhouette Cameo to your computer and choose your designs.? You only purchase and download the specific designs you want {plus, I've seen some nice free ones floating around}.? The possibilities are limitless, really.?
Ever since I used Angela's Cuttlebug, I have been smitten.? This handy little machine easily embosses paper, adding texture to scrapbook pages, cards, and other paper projects.? It's fun and easy to use {though a bit heavy}.? I know we could come up with all sorts of creative ways to use this!
Raileigh loves dressing up more than just about anything else.? Well... besides reading.? But, then again, she will often read while dressed up!? So, many of her Christmas gifts revolve around those two things!? I was blown away when I saw these fairy wings.? They are less than $2!? I don't know is you've shopped for fairy wings before, but that is a steal!
For the past several years, we have had the same Christmas mantle-- an assortment of snow globes we've collected over the years.? However, a lot of those snow globes are now over 10 years old.? And, just in case you didn't know-- snow globes don't age well.? They now contain snow globs instead of snow flakes and the pieces inside many have shifted.? This year, I plan on laying some fresh garland, and I think this 5-piece votive set would look lovely sitting amongst the garland. ?
Raileigh enjoys puppets.? She'll crouch beside the chair while I work and put on puppet shows for me.? This darling kit would be a fun seasonal craft for us, and it would be one she'd enjoy playing with afterwards as well!? I highly suspect that Rudolph and Bumble might be part of puppet shows year round at my house!

I also want to share a few other special sales and exciting announcements you might be interested in.

  • Currently, there is a Silhouette Cameo GIVEAWAY going on at Crafts Unleashed {the Consumer Crafts blog}.? It ends in a few days, so enter now!?

Benefits fight brings lesbian couple to high court

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Like a lot of newlyweds, Karen Golinski was eager to enjoy the financial fruits of marriage. Within weeks of her wedding, she applied to add her spouse to her employer-sponsored health care plan, a move that would save the couple thousands of dollars a year.

Her ordinarily routine request still is being debated more than four years later, and by the likes of former attorneys general, a slew of senators, the Obama administration and possibly this week, the U.S. Supreme Court.

Because Golinski is married to another woman and works for the U.S. government, her claim for benefits has morphed into a multi-layered legal challenge to a 1996 law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing unions like hers.

The high court has scheduled a closed-door conference for Friday to review Golinski's case and four others that also seek to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act overwhelmingly approved by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton.

The purpose of the meeting is to decide which, if any, to put on the court's schedule for arguments next year.

The outcome carries economic and social consequences for gay, lesbian and bisexual couples, who now are unable to access Social Security survivor benefits, file joint income taxes, inherit a deceased spouse's pension or obtain family health insurance.

The other plaintiffs in the cases pending before the court include the state of Massachusetts, 13 couples and five widows and widowers.

"It's pretty monumental and it's an honor," said Golinski, a staff lawyer for the federal appeals court based in San Francisco who married her partner of 23 years, Amy Cunninghis, during the brief 2008 window when same-sex marriages were legal in California.

The federal trial courts that heard the cases all ruled the act violates the civil rights of legally married gays and lesbians. Two appellate courts agreed, making it highly likely the high court will agree to hear at least one of the appeals, Lambda Legal Executive Director Jon Davidson said.

"I don't think we've ever had an occasion where the Supreme Court has had so many gay rights cases knocking at its door," said Davidson, whose gay legal advocacy group represents Golinski. "That in and of itself shows how far we've come."

The Supreme Court also is scheduled to discuss Friday whether it should take two more long-simmering cases dealing with relationship recognition for same-sex couples.

One is an appeal of two lower court rulings that struck down California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. The other is a challenge to an Arizona law that made state employees in same-sex relationships ineligible for domestic partner benefits.

The last time the court confronted a gay rights case was in 2010, when the justices voted 5-4 to let stand lower court rulings holding that a California law school could deny recognition to a Christian student group that does not allow gay members.

The time before that was the court's landmark 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, which declared state anti-sodomy laws to be an unconstitutional violation of personal privacy.

Brigham Young University law professor Lynn Wardle, who testified before Congress when lawmakers were considering the Defense of Marriage Act 16 years ago, said he still thinks the law passes constitutional muster.

"Congress has the power to define for itself domestic relationships, including defining relationships for purposes of federal programs," Wardle said.

At the same time, he said, the gay rights landscape has shifted radically since 1996, citing this month's election of the first sitting president to declare support for same-sex marriage and four state ballot measures being decided in favor of gay rights activists.

"This is the gay moment, momentum is building," Wardle said. "The politics are profound, and politics influence what the court does."

For Golinski and Cunninghis, getting this far has been a long, sometimes frustrating and sometimes heartening journey.

Citing the act, known as DOMA, the Office of Personnel Management, the federal government's human relations arm, initially denied Golinski's attempt to enroll Cunninghis in the medical coverage she had selected for herself and the couple's son, now 10.

"I got a phone call from OPM in Washington, D.C., asking me to confirm that Amy Cunninghis was female, and I said, 'Yes, she is,' and they said, 'We won't be able to add her to your health plan," Golinski recalled.

Golinski knew that her employer, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, had a policy prohibiting discrimination against gay workers, so she filed an employee grievance and won a hearing before the court's dispute resolution officer, Chief Judge Alex Kozinski.

As a lawyer for the court, she felt awkward about pursuing the issue, but she was also angry. Lambda Legal and a San Francisco law firm offered to represent her.

"I had been working for the courts since 1990, and I feel, like everybody, I work hard and I'm a valuable employee, and I'm not getting paid the same amount if I have to pay for a whole separate plan for Amy," she said. "It was really hurting our family."

Kozinski ruled that Golinski was entitled to full spousal benefits, but federal officials ordered Golinski's insurer not to process her application, prompting the chief judge to issue a scathing opinion on her behalf.

After the government refused to budge, Golinski sued in January 2010.

The couple had joked about whether they "would make a federal case" out of their situation. Cunninghis noted that their genders would not have been an issue had Golinski worked in the private sector or in state or local government where domestic partnerships are offered.

Because of DOMA, she said, "we don't get access to a whole slew of benefits."

The Department of Justice originally opposed Golinski in court but changed course last year after President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder said they would no longer defend the law.

Republican members of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, which oversees legal activities of the House of Representatives, voted to hire an outside lawyer first to back the act in Golinski's case and the four others, and to then appeal the rulings on its unconstitutionality.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White handed Cunninghis and Golinski an unequivocal victory in February, finding that anti-gay sentiment motivated Congress to pass DOMA.

In ordering the government to allow Golinski to enroll her wife in a family health plan, White rejected all of the House group's arguments, including that the law was necessary to foster stable unions among men and women.

A group of 10 U.S. senators who voted for DOMA in 1996 have filed a brief with the Supreme Court angrily denouncing the judge's opinion and urging the high court to overturn it.

"It is one thing for the District Court to conclude that traditional moral views, standing alone, do not justify the enactment of DOMA; it is quite another to find that legislators who hold or express such moral views somehow taint the constitutionality of the statute," they said.

Former U.S. Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Edwin Meese also weighed in, telling the court that Obama had failed in his duty and set a dangerous precedent by declining to defend DOMA.

As a result of White's ruling, Cunninghis was allowed in March to be added to Golinski's health plan.

Golinski so far is the only gay American who has been allowed to begin receiving federal benefits while DOMA remains in effect, a development that could be reversed if the Supreme Court upholds DOMA.

Until then, the couple said they are going to trust that the tide of history is moving toward gay rights.

"It seems so simple to us: just put me on the family health plan," Cunninghis said. "It's much bigger than that obviously, yet it isn't."

The Family That Goes Alaska Fly Fishing Together, Stays Happy ...

Families are encouraged to spend a lot of their time doing things that they will enjoy together. It is understandable that there are things that they can spend in the company of each other. They can go for Alaska fly fishing if they wish for an activity that every member will enjoy. This is one of the best ways to keep family members entertained and amazed.

Worms were always a part of activities that entail of catching fishes but this one in particular does away with it. Instead, people can try anglers with foam, fur, yarn, feather instead of the worms. The anglers would be a lot of fun to make as the materials are attached to a thread for it to look like it is flying. There are different forms or styles that this activity has taken. Others even made a sports competition out of this. Nonetheless, it is still best to enjoy the activity with the family.

So many people love to try this activity because it is divided into two levels. The first one is by taking off into a lake, stream or pond and cast for fishes. Only men are able to enjoy this activity while the women and kids are simply involved in preparing those that are used in making flies. On the other hand, the second option is the tying which is something that everyone can enjoy.

Most people have made an art in creating the flies used for this activity. There are others who consider this as a past time or hobby that they enjoy with their kids or spouses. There are people who are so engrossed in this that they have formed organizations for it. There are even some who enroll to specialized schools to enroll to this. Some for instance, have attended Michigan fly fishing schools.

For some time, fur and feathers were the ones used for this. It was always the goal to copy insects as fishes love to munch on them. In recent years however, others got more creative and have utilized other materials for it. Some would even use the synthetic materials for the purpose is still met and these are readily available.

There are several types of flies that make a huge buzz among people. Others are simply amused at how others are able to make really creative ones. It is also good to note that some families spend time at Michigan steelhead fishing for their ties.

There are times when people would simply think that the activity is only for the males. That should be erased for in fact, they can try other activities that kids could also enjoy. With that, everyone will have a role in the fun.

The families will be able to enjoy their time and shot at Alaska fly fishing. It is one of the recommended activities that the family can enjoy. They may even savor the adventures that they will encounter together.

Lauren Shuster-Certified Personal Trainer Helps Clients Reach ...

Ontario, Canada -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/23/2012 -- According to Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, adults between the ages of 18 and 64 should spend a minimum of 150 minutes each week engaged in moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. This activity should take place in periods of ten minutes or more. Muscle and bone strengthening activities should be added to the workout routine at least twice each week also. Doing so leads to better strength, fitness and mental health. According to Lauren Shuster personal trainer, those who lack the motivation to achieve these goals will benefit from the services of a personal trainer.

"Following the guidelines, a person reduces his or her risk of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and many other health conditions," Ms. Shuster explains. "When one is not motivated though, reaching these goals may seem to be an impossible task. With Toronto Boot Camp classes, anyone can easily meet and exceed the recommended guidelines and have fun while doing so. If boot camp classes aren't what one is after, individual sessions are offered along with couple and small group personal training. It's all a matter of what one is looking for and comfortable with."

Ms. Shuster continues, "For older adults, traditional classes may be too strenuous due to existing health conditions. A personal trainer in Toronto modifies activities and exercises based on these conditions to ensure no harm is done. With exercise, many health problems will decrease or disappear completely, leaving the person feeling younger and healthier than he or she has in years." Engaging in moderate to vigorous activity also reduces the risk of high blood pressure, premature death, certain types of cancer and obesity.

One key to a successful workout routine is variety. "When using a personal trainer, clients will find that this is never an issue. If the trainer detects boredom setting in, the routine will be varied. Exercise can be fun," according to Ms. Shuster. "It's all a matter of finding a trainer who will work to provide the motivation and encouragement needed for the client to reach goals he or she has set."

"From Postural Assessment to Pre and Post Natal Fitness, there is a class for each client. All are designed using BOSU, the resistance band and stability ball to create a unique program. All help to improve strength, endurance, posture and overall health," Ms. Shuster says. "No matter what is needed, a program will be developed to help each client reach his or her goal."

About Lauren Shuster-Certified Personal Trainer
Lauren Shuster is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Anthropology and Biology minor. Certified through Can-Fit-Por as both a certified personal trainer and certified fitness instructor, Ms. Shuster works with a wide variety of clients, ranging from pre/post natal clients to clients training for sporting events. Is Thanksgiving a big waste of turkey?

Americans love Thanksgiving, they just don't love turkey. It turns out that more than one-third of the turkey meat we buy each holiday gets thrown in the garbage. Blame it on bad planning, lack of leftover ideas or just a wealthy, slothful society.

"We love to have the big feast at holiday time," said Dana Gunder, food and agriculture scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council. "That results in a lot more extra food. People do leftovers for a day or two, but people are sick by day three. I think it's just basic math."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that Americans throw away 35 percent of the turkey they buy, and that does not include bones. That's compared to only 15 percent waste for chicken. What's worse, throwing away turkey isn't just bad manners or a big waste of money ($282 million), it's also bad for the environment, according to Gunder.

PHOTOS: Recipes for Cooking Invasive Species

Growing a pound of turkey meat uses 468 gallons of water and releases 12 pounds of CO2 emissions according to a report by the Environmental Working Group ? equivalent to driving your car 11 miles and taking a 94-minute shower. Gunder says that nationwide, consumers will purchase around 736 million pounds of turkey this Thanksgiving, of which about 581 million pounds will be actual meat. Unless Americans change their ways this Thanksgiving, about 204 million pounds will be tossed, along with about 1 million tons of CO2 and 95 billion gallons of water.

"We can do a lot better," said Dawn Undurraga, nutritionist and registered dietitian at the Environmental Working Group. "Especially when we have doomsday predictions about the future of food."

VIDEO: How To Make Vegetables Healthier

Undurraga noted that each American throws away 253 pounds of food each year. In other parts of the world, such as Asia and Africa, that figure is only 13 pounds per person annually. So how can we waste less and still have a Happy Thanksgiving?

"Buying smaller turkeys is a great start," Gunder said.

The National Turkey Federation has a couple of ideas on how to waste less:

NEWS: Where Does Your Food Come From?

Experts say another idea is to bring some plastic containers or Tupperware with you to a Thanksgiving meal, along with that bottle of wine or extra pumpkin pie. Sharing food with others is a great way to remember the Pilgrims who the meal is supposed to celebrate.

"There is irony here in that we are celebrating how rough it was for the Pilgrims and all of the challenges they had," Gunder said. "And here we are just tossing it."

Russian beauty queen puts spotlight on Russia's official corruption

Her public denunciation of Russia's corruption surprised some this week.?It also coincided with one of the Kremlin's periodic efforts to convince Russians that something is being done about it.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / November 23, 2012

Natalia Pereverzeva - a Russian beauty queen - spoke out again against endemic corruption during a contest in the Phillipines.

A Russian beauty queen garnered global headlines this week?by standing by her impassioned denunciation of the endemic corruption that demoralizes society and saps the economic life of her homeland, made in an essay she'd written that was supposed to be about why she's proud to be a Russian.

"But my Russia ? it is also my poor, long-suffering country, mercilessly torn to pieces by greedy, dishonest, unbelieving people," Natalia Pereverzeva?wrote in an essay that was part of her entrance requirement to the Miss Earth competition this week in Manila, Philippines.

"My Russia ? it is a great artery, from which the 'chosen' few people are draining away its wealth. My Russia is a beggar. My Russia cannot help her elderly and orphans. From it, bleeding, like from a sinking ship, engineers, doctors, teachers are fleeing, because they have nothing to live on," she wrote.

Ms. Pereverzeva's outburst was almost certainly spontaneous, based on her own personal experience and straight from the heart.

But it also happens to coincide with one of the periodic anticorruption crusades launched from the Kremlin to convince the Russian public that something is being done to combat the official graft that by some accounts?siphons off as much as a third of Russia's gross domestic product?and undermines the effectiveness of all government efforts,?from law enforcement?to preparations for the Olympic Games.

Recent weeks have seen the fall from grace of at least one top official, as well as the most sweeping set of allegations about official graft ? involving several government agencies ? to be revealed to the public in years. Some experts suggest that Vladimir Putin, now embarked on his third term as president, may be using his vast powers and political capital to finally confront Russia's most intractable scourge. Others argue that it's a public relations campaign at best, or more likely a cover for political score-settling among bureaucrats, which is traditionally the most common reason that explicit corruption charges surface in Russia.

Hard numbers on corruption

Whatever the deeper political truth, the facts about everyday official graft so far revealed are truly shocking, and they provide some hard numbers to back up Pereverzeva's emotional assertions.??? ?

(AP) ? After more than two months, Libya's investigation into the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi appears in limbo. Key security commanders and witnesses say they were never questioned. No suspects have been named, and gunmen seen participating in the assault walk freely in the eastern Libyan city.

Hanging over the probe is a fear of reprisals from extremist militiamen. Farag al-Fazani, a young commander of a Libyan security force commissioned to protect the U.S. post at the time of the Sept. 11 attack, says he sees militants he recognizes from that chaotic night.

They recognize him too.

"I get death threats by phone (saying) you are an infidel and spilling your blood is permitted," said al-Fazani. "No one can protect me. I see them and they know me."

The dangers in the city are clear. On Wednesday, the head of one of the city's security agencies, National Security chief Col. Farag el-Dersi, was shot to death by three attackers as he headed home from work. It is the latest in a string of killings of officials with no word on who is behind them, though there is no indication they are connected to the investigation.

U.S. and Libyan leaders have sworn to hunt down those who carried out the Sept. 11 assault, in which gunmen blasted their way into the consulate compound after nightfall and killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens. Most officials and witnesses have blamed fighters from Ansar al-Shariah, an Islamic extremist militia in the city. But much remains unexplained ? including what was the attack's motive, why did Libyan security pull back from the consulate and even what time the attack started, much less the bigger questions of whether outside terror groups like al-Qaida had a hand.

The FBI, which sent a team to Tripoli immediately after the attack to work with Libyan investigators, has said nothing about its findings so far. At FBI headquarters in Washington, spokesman Michael Kortan on Wednesday declined to comment on the Libyan's conduct of the probe.

From the Libyan side, there has been little sign of an investigation.

Numerous senior security officials in the city approached by The Associated Press knew nothing about the probe, and none said they had been questioned by investigators. The commander of Joint Operation Room who oversaw the security forces' reaction during the attack said he sent a report to the ruling General National Congress but received no feedback and had not been contacted by investigators.

"We were surprised that we were not summoned. ... Very strange," said the commander, Abdel-Salam al-Barghathi. "At the very least, they should ask the commander of the operation room."

"I don't see anything on the ground" by way of investigation, he said.

Several witnesses reported seeing an Islamic militant commander, Ahmed Abu Khattala, help direct the attack. Abu Khattala denies involvement but admits he was at the scene to help rescue men trapped in the consulate. He has not been questioned by investigators, whether as a witness or a suspect.

"No one from Ansar al-Shariah has been summoned, or even told they are wanted," Abu Khattala told The AP. Abu Khattala is a frequent visitor of Benghazi's el-Fadheel hotel, which is owned by Adel Galgoul, the owner of a safe house to which staffers from the consulate were evacuated during the attack, only to be hit by mortars that led to two of the American deaths.

Al-Fazani, the protection force commander, said Ansar al-Shariah carried out the consulate attack, led by Abu Khattala. "They divided themselves into two groups, one stormed the place and the second gave protection and supply," he said.

Al-Fazani said he was told to go to Tripoli to speak to U.S. investigators, but he was too afraid to do so.

"I don't want to get into this. Security and things here are still tense," he said.

The investigation commission created by the National Congress to work with the FBI is largely based out of Tripoli, 400 miles (650 kilometers) away from Benghazi.

It has faced personnel problems. Initially it was led by a judge in Benghazi, but he stepped down after only two weeks, according to the head of the Benghazi Cassation court, Fatma al-Baraghathi, who appointed him.

He was replaced by a judge in Tripoli, but al-Baraghathi said it was not clear if he had started work. The commission also includes the Interior Ministry's Criminal Investigation Division and Libyan intelligence.

Contacted by the AP, the judge who stepped down refused to give details. "I no longer have anything to do with this case and I have nothing to say about it," said Salem Abdel-Atti.

Deputy Interior Minister Omar al-Khadrawi insisted the investigation was "going well" but could not say when it would be completed.

Speaking two weeks ago, ministry spokesman Ezz Eddin al-Fazani said the results would be released "soon."

He and other Interior Ministry officials say they don't even know how many people have been detained. Early on, top officials claimed they made anywhere from 6 to 40 arrests, but no one can say if anyone is still held. In any case, all of those detained were post-attack looters, not gunmen who stormed the compound, former prime minister Mustafa Abu-Shagour told The Associated Press.

The confusion reflects the broader disarray of Libya's state security. To keep a degree of peace, authorities rely on the numerous militias made up of tens of thousands of young Libyans who took up arms against Gadhafi. It is often difficult to draw clear lines between those providing security and those causing instability. Many militias are under the Interior Ministry's Supreme Security Committee, giving them a veneer of state authority to handle security tasks police would normally perform, but they remain virtually independent, loyal to their own commanders and agendas.

Security officials are fearful of confronting the militias, which are far better armed than security forces. Ansar al-Shariah and its mother group, the Rafallah Sahati brigade, are among the strongest militias in Benghazi.

Fawzi Wanis, head of the Supreme Security Committee, is convinced militiamen within the committee fed information to the consulate attackers. But "I don't have the capability to carry out an internal investigation."

Details of the attack remain muddled. The Obama administration says it was a planned terror attack by militants, after initial confusion over whether there was also a protest against an anti-Islam film. Libyan security guards at the consulate and most witnesses say there were no peaceful protests outside the mission, but there were onlookers attending a wedding at a hall named Venice outside the mission's main gate.

Libyan security officials continue to give contradictory statements. Al-Barghathi, the head of the command center, told The Associated Press that there were protesters and he withdrew troops from in front of the consulate because he did not want to cause casualties among civilians. But in the report he submitted to the National Council ? shown to AP ? he makes no mention of protests.

Even the time the attack began is unclear. A U.S. timeline says it started at 9:40 p.m., but most witnesses say the first firing began an hour earlier. Another question is why Stevens did not have stronger security and why Libyan security reinforcements did not arrive until 11 p.m., even though military and security bases are nearby.

The void of information has only fueled conspiracy theories among Benghazi's residents. Al-Barghathi, for example, is convinced the United States wanted Stevens to be killed.

"They brought him here to get rid of him. We have information that he was about to convert to Islam," said al-Barghathi. "Why else would he not have enough security?"
