Drug bust at Boeing aircraft plant in Pennsylvania (Reuters)

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) ? Thirty-seven people were arrested on Thursday in a drug bust at a Boeing plant in Pennsylvania that makes military aircraft, with the charges including selling a potent prescription painkiller, officials said.

Authorities said all but one of those charged is a current or former Boeing employee.

U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger said 23 people were charged with selling the prescription painkiller Oxycontin and other illegal drugs and 14 were charged with attempted possession of various drugs for trying to buy them.

"This investigation and prosecution focused not only on the sellers, but also on the users because of the critical role that these employees play in manufacturing military aircraft," Memeger said.

Another person was expected to be arrested, officials said.

The drug bust at the plant in Ridley Park, a suburb of Philadelphia, took place early on Thursday morning.

There was no evidence that the integrity of the work on any aircraft had been compromised, Memeger said.

A Boeing spokesman had no immediate comment.

Michael Jackson 911 Call Played in Court; Bodyguard Says Dr. Conrad Murray Hid Propofol

Michael Jackson's security guard Alberto Alvarez testified in Dr. Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial today, recalling that fateful day in 2009.

Alvarez was the one who called 911 after Jackson's vital signs fell. The 911 call is included below. But his testimony delved into much more than that.

Murray asked Alberto Alvarez to remove several vials of Propofol before he called an ambulance on June 25, 2009, according to the witness' tesitmony.

Alvarez claims he quickly arrived at the scene and saw Murray performing one-handed chest compressions on Michael Jackson, who was still in the bed.

According to Alvarez, Murray immediately asked him to pack up several vials and an IV bag - one that contained a vial with a "milky white substance."

Murray THEN asked Alvarez to call 911, at which point the dispatcher ordered him to move the singer from the bed to the floor in order to perform CPR.

According to Alvarez, paramedics arrived soon after. He was grilled on the timeline of these key events by Murray's lawyer, but he remained steadfast.

Murray's defense hinges on the theory that Michael Jackson killed himself with a lethal dose of Propofol while the physician was (briefly) out of the room.

They have to try something. Your take? Dr. Conrad Murray is ...

Presidential contenders boosted by super PACs

(AP) ? Think of super PACs as shadow cash machines for presidential candidates. They're going to be big this year.

Real big.

The independent fundraising groups can gather and spend unlimited money to run ads supporting a candidate or attacking a rival. The leading Republican contenders, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, both have at least one super PAC working to boost their candidacies. Another super PAC is backing President Barack Obama's re-election bid.

Although they aren't permitted to coordinate directly with the campaigns, which must follow strict federal restrictions on what they can raise and spend, many of the groups are staffed by former aides and fundraisers who know the candidates' thinking and strategy. Watchdog groups see super PACs as just the latest erosion of campaign finance rules that date back to the Watergate era of the 1970s.

Republican-leaning super PACs were first influential in the 2010 congressional elections. Now, presidential contenders are receiving millions of dollars in financial backing from new free-spending, unregulated political action groups.

Make Us Great Again PAC, a super PAC supporting Republican front-runner Rick Perry, was co-founded by Mike Toomey, a former chief of staff to the Texas governor. Documents show the group plans to spend $55 million to support Perry's White House run.

The Perry-aligned super PAC will have to compete with Restore Our Future, formed to boost his top rival, Mitt Romney. It raised $20 million from January through June. Its treasurer, Charles Spies, was general counsel for Romney's 2008 White House bid.

The third-quarter 2011 campaign fundraising period ends Friday. Campaign finance reports from that quarter will offer a clearer picture of how much help the super PACs will be able to offer their candidates.

The super PACs that favor certain candidates have already begun spending on television advertising. Keeping Conservatives United, a super PAC supporting Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, assailed Perry's record in Texas.

Candidates will continue to do their own campaign fundraising, following much more restrictive federal rules than those governing super PACs. A presidential campaign can raise at most $5,000 total from an individual donor ? $2,500 each for the primary and general elections. Super PACs can solicit and spend unlimited funds. Some super PACs also have affiliated groups whose donors are allowed to remain anonymous.

One of those is Priorities USA, a super PAC formed by former Obama White House aides Bill Burton and Sean Sweeney to promote the president's re-election. A sister group, Priorities USA Action, allows anonymous contributions even though the president has publicly criticized them.

Obama raised $750 million for his 2008 campaign and is looking to exceed that total for his re-election effort, raising the question of why he would even need a super PAC working on his behalf. And the Perry and Romney campaigns are expected to far outpace all other GOP competitors in fundraising, with their aligned super PACs only helping to cement that advantage.

To some degree, outside groups are supplanting the role of the major political parties, which help coordinate messages and get-out-the-vote efforts for candidates, but also operate under strict federal fundraising rules. The party committees remain an important, if somewhat diluted, force. The Democratic National Committee has raised more than $80 million to support Obama's re-election campaign, recent federal filings show.

After the Watergate scandal, Congress put limits on campaign fundraising and spending as a way to stem the corruptive influence of money and created the Federal Election Commission to enforce those limits. Government watchdogs say super PACs are undermining that intent.

"The most dangerous vehicle for corruption in the political system is the candidate-specific super PAC," said Democracy 21 president Fred Wertheimer, a longtime advocate for campaign-finance limits. "If we can't shut them down, they are going to spread like wildfire to members of Congress, and they're going to eviscerate contribution limits enacted over a period of a century to prevent corruption of federal officeholders."

Restore Our Future, which backs Romney, came under scrutiny recently for a $1 million contribution it received from a donor identified as W Spann LLC ? actually a corporation set up by Edward Conard, a former Romney colleague at the Bain Capital investment firm. Restore Our Future's report to the Federal Election Commission was amended once Conard stepped forward, and Romney has brushed off the controversy as a nonissue.

Romney spoke at a July fundraiser for Restore Our Future, raising questions of how closely a candidate can work with a super PAC before crossing the line into coordination.

Some Washington campaign veterans aren't convinced the new PACs will by default be corruptive. Michael Toner, counsel to Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's now-abandoned presidential campaign, said the outside groups will bring a host of new messages ? competing in the marketplace of ideas ? that are transparent in their sources of funding.

Super PACs made their debut following a Supreme Court decision that removed restrictions on corporate and union spending in elections. Super PACs spent more than $65 million that cycle, according to data from the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign spending. Republican-leaning groups far outpaced their Democratic counterparts, helping Republicans win control of the House and pick up six seats in the Senate.

The biggest-spending super PAC that year was American Crossroads, a GOP group connected to Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush's longtime political director. Crossroads and an affiliated organization, Crossroads GPS, spent nearly $38 million to influence House and Senate races.

Crossroads has already raised $25 million this year and has spent more than $1 million on ads in several special elections around the country, as well as to influence the debate over Obama's new $447 million jobs proposal and the negotiations last summer over raising the federal debt ceiling. Crossroads president Steven Law said super PACs help give voters an abundance of competitive information ? not just from well-funded incumbents ? that's ultimately good for the country.

"Just with President Obama's billion-dollar campaign and the union juggernaut alone, we believe that Republicans will be significantly outspent in 2012," he said, "and our goal is to prevent them from using that crushing weight to irradiate Republican candidates up and down the ticket."

Democrats say they formed their own super PACs as a way to respond to the huge Republican fundraising advantage in 2010.

"You play with the rules that you're given, and you cede no ground," said Rodell Mollineau, the president of American Bridge 21st Century, a research organization for Democratic super PACs. "You have to push back forcefully."

Sneaking up on the glassy transition of water

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? Researchers claim to have settled a long-standing debate over the exact temperature at which water transforms into an exotic glass-like substance believed to be present in comets and other icy objects in the outer solar system, as well as in the coldest regions of Earth's atmosphere.

Rapid cooling of ordinary water or compression of ordinary ice: either of these can transform normal H2O into an exotic substance that resembles glass in its transparency, brittleness, hardness, and luster. Unlike everyday ice, which has a highly organized crystalline structure, this glass-like material's molecules are arranged in a random, disorganized way. Scientists have studied glassy water for decades, but the exact temperature at which water acquires glass-like properties has been the subject of heated debate for years, due to the difficulty of manipulating pure glassy water in laboratories.

Now, in a paper published in the AIP's Journal of Chemical Physics, physicists from the University of Pisa and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche at the Institute for Chemical-Physical Processes (CNR-IPCF) in Pisa, Italy, claim to have put an end to the controversy. Unlike previous attempts in which scientists tried to measure the transition temperature directly, the CNR team "snuck up" on the answer by inferring the temperature from a thorough study of the dynamics of water. They examined water's behavior in bulk and at the nano-scale, at high temperatures and low, combining their own experimental results with 15 decades' worth of research by colleagues.

They also measured the glass transition temperature and the molecular behavior of water that had been doped with other materials, and used this information to set lower and upper boundaries on the transition temperature for pure water. Taken together, their evidence points to a magic number of approximately 136 Kelvin (-137 Celsius). The authors say their work supports traditional views of this phenomenon and refutes recent claims that the transition is above 160 Kelvin (-113 Celsius). The research could find uses in technology associated with food science and the cryopreservation of biological materials, as well as in the study of water in comets and on the surface of planets.

Passive Solar Greenhouses - Technology of Power Station

With the growing environmental awareness of the past decades many people have opted, and are opting, for growing their own vegetables and fruit, or just flowers. But in order to have a year-round yield that keeps fresh vegetables on your table, you need a greenhouse. This is especially true if you live in a northern region, where a greenhouse allows you to take care of your garden products in a controlled environment, and releases you from worries about frost, flooding, burning, and many other problems related to outdoor agriculture.

Solar passive greenhouses go a step further in improving the agricultural process, being excellent choices when it comes to maintaining agricultural affordability and durability throughout the year, not to mention they are also an efficient way to use local resources.

These greenhouses trap solar radiation that is then used in the photosynthesis process, but their greatest advantage is that they are particularly effective for gardeners who have to deal with extreme temperatures and weather conditions, since the absorbed sunlight energy can be used even during cold short days. This is made possible thanks to the active venting fan systems that are powered by the absorbed solar energy, and keep the greenhouse cool and moist if needed. There are models in the market that come with the materials that will collect and deliver water to the plants, too.

Solar greenhouses are simple in design and they do not require a lot of maintenance as there are no mechanical systems involved. This type of greenhouses are equipped with thermal mass walls and floors to absorb solar energy, which should not exceed 6 inches in thickness nor be covered completely by planters or floor coverings. Their glass windows face south, which enables the use of up to 75% of the sun?s energy that strikes them.

Naturally, the building costs are slightly higher for a passive solar greenhouse. It is necessary to prepare the ground and lay a foundation that may cover the entire floor, or just outline the perimeter depending on the gardener?s aims. Even if it is only the perimeter there are obvious gains for the soil is kept from freezing or drying. Some carpentry skills and the ability to read schemes are required, which means contracting a specialist is probably the best option if you don?t have these skills.

Still, a passive solar greenhouse offers all the advantages of a traditional greenhouse and much more.

Levi Johnston: "President Palin is a Phrase that Scares Me!"

bristlev1_wide.jpg
Levi Johnston, the father of Bristol Palin's son, Tripp, is fighting back against claims that he's a deadbeat dad in his new book, Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs. He talked to In Touch about the onslaught of Palin books, the craziest offer he's gotten and the prospect of President Sarah Palin.

There's a whole bookshelf of Palin books out there. What's your take on the competition?
I did read Sarah's book, Going Rogue. I didn't read Bristol's book [Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far]. I just heard a lot of things out of it, as far as "I'm a gnat" and talking about how I stole her virginity. Her book is just flat out lying, it's unbelievably disgusting. For somebody to date someone for several years, have a child, almost get married twice, you don't come out and say your virginity was stolen. Let's be real, lady! Mine and Joe McGinniss' book [The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin] are 100 percent different. He's written it from interviewing other people. You can go on the Internet and write a book and grab all the stuff you can about her, not knowing if it's true or not. Basically, that's what he's done. Mine is full of 100 percent truth, I lived there. I've known them for a long, long time now and I was there and everything in there's a fact.

Between posing for Playgirl and writing for Vanity Fair, you've done a lot of random things post-fame. What are the craziest offers you've gotten?
Half a million dollars to masturbate on camera and do a porno with the Sarah Palin look-alike who did Nailin' Palin. We didn't think about it, it was a hang-up phone call. I've got so much horrible stuff. When it comes, I'm just laughing about how stupid it is and that they actually think I'd consider it. It's crazy!

You recently got your pilot's license. What's next?
We shot a reality show. We actually got picked up by CMT then they actually got a new crew or president, then they decided they didn't want it anymore, so we recut it. It's good. We're shopping that. I've done a couple of other shows. I've done H8er with Mario [Lopez]. The hater hated me because apparently I'm a bad father. It's just so funny at how somebody who's never met me before -- she didn't even know Bristol's name ? she kept calling her Crystal ? she literally had no idea who I was and she hated me!

If there was Deer in the Headlights: The Movie, who should play you?
If we do a movie, it's going to me playing me! I've had enough of other people acting my life out for me!

What's your take on the prospect of Sarah Palin in the White House?
"President Palin" is a phrase that scares me there. She's apparently only 5 percent behind Obama right now and that's frightening me. I'm figuring I might have to move to Canada because she's gonna kick me out of the country if she wins!

For an exclusive on Levi's custody battle with Bristol for Tripp, pick up the new issue of In Touch, on stands September 30!

Business ethics in a all-time low ? SRI Portfolio Management

Eventhough we live in a time were ethics seems to be one of the most important issues that business needs to take into consideration it would seem that the field.

After a search on the word ?Business Ethics? on google trends it looks like that ethics is just not what it used to be. We have seen a small increase on business ethics searches in the later part of 2011 but it is still a long way from where I would like it to be. Maybe it is as Godin says ?There is no such thing as business Ethics?

People learn while they sleep, study suggests

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

People may be learning while they're sleeping ? an unconscious form of memory that is still not well understood, according to a study by Michigan State University researchers.

The findings are highlighted in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

"We speculate that we may be investigating a separate form of memory, distinct from traditional memory systems," said Kimberly Fenn, assistant professor of psychology and lead researcher on the project. "There is substantial evidence that during sleep, your brain is processing information without your awareness and this ability may contribute to memory in a waking state."

In the study of more than 250 people, Fenn and Zach Hambrick, associate professor of psychology, suggest people derive vastly different effects from this "sleep memory" ability, with some memories improving dramatically and others not at all. This ability is a new, previously undefined form of memory.

"You and I could go to bed at the same time and get the same amount of sleep," Fenn said, "but while your memory may increase substantially, there may be no change in mine." She added that most people showed improvement.

Fenn said she believes this potential separate memory ability is not being captured by traditional intelligence tests and aptitude tests such as the SAT and ACT.

"This is the first step to investigate whether or not this potential new memory construct is related to outcomes such as classroom learning," she said.

It also reinforces the need for a good night's sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, people are sleeping less every year, with 63 percent of Americans saying their sleep needs are not being met during the week.

"Simply improving your sleep could potentially improve your performance in the classroom," Fenn said.

Report: Recession Induced Bankruptcies Undermine the Value of Business Continuity Function

The global market for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) Solutions and Services is forecast to reach $61.7 billion by the year 2017. Growth in the market over the next few years will be primarily driven by increasing levels of a company?s exposure to external and internal threats/risks and growing focus on risk management solutions as a strategic tool for achieving sustainable, long-term growth and to sharpen competitive advantages. Increasing dependency of organizations on IT solutions for managing critical data and subsequent fears over system failures and data losses due to natural or man made disasters also provide a strong business case for BC/DR solutions and services.

The discipline of risk management, in the corporate world, has undergone a rapid change over the past decade, successfully transitioning from an essentially back-office activity to become a crucial part of the overall enterprise management process. The significance of optimum risk management cannot be undermined, given the growing awareness of the impact of mismanagement of short term and long-term risks, which are typically manifested in the form of loss of market shares, investor confidence, reputation and market value of the enterprise. Winning back or recovering lost credibility in the marketplace is a painstaking task that requires time, effort, and money. It is therefore of little surprise that risk officers, over the last couple of years, have assumed an important role in management teams and wield considerable influence on the decision making process. Business continuity, a subset of risk management and a type of organizational planning, identifies the level of a company?s exposure to external and internal threats/risks to knit a business continuity plan (BCP) that will help the company stay afloat in the event of disasters (local, environmental and untoward business/national events). A part of an organization?s overall risk management strategy, BCP, which is flanked by crisis management and disaster recovery planning, stands to gain in the upcoming years.

According to Global Industry Analysts, while risk management is aimed at being preemptive, Business Continuity Planning (BCP) deals with the repercussions of the risks that were ignored previously. BCP is a step forward from the preemptive approach of risk management, and works on the assumption that an assumed crisis would eventually occur. Against a backdrop of a scenario where organizations are largely dependent upon IT solutions for gathering, storing, managing and using strategically important data, fear of system failures/data losses caused by natural calamities or man made errors remains critically high for IT administrators. With modern-day businesses displaying zero tolerance towards revenue impacting downtime and data losses, there exists fertile opportunities for the growth and proliferation of solutions that not only help businesses continue their operations in event of disaster, but also help them retrieve, rescue, and restore lost data in the event of a system crash.

Packed with capabilities such as effective storage, protection of critical information, retrieval of stored data as and when required, quick resumption of operations after a disaster, BC/DR solutions are becoming an integral part of every company?s strategic plans, particularly in information sensitive verticals such as healthcare, finance and government departments. With both natural and man made disasters becoming more frequent over the last few years, starting with Y2K bug and the US terrorist attacks early this century, to the more recent disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in the US, unrest in Middle East, earthquake in New Zealand and Tsunami in Japan, companies across the globe have been fast adopting BC/DR solutions as a proactive measure towards ensuring continued operations. Continuous increase in volume of digital data handled by new-generation businesses and the imminent fear of data loss and disruption of business operations, therefore, is proving to be a perfect business case for adoption of business continuity/disaster recovery (BC/DR) solutions.

Despite the popular perception that the dynamic environment of risk that companies operate in and the ever-present data security threats, which interestingly tend to escalate during periods of economic downturn, make BC/DR Solutions and Services market recession proof, the market ironically in the year 2009 depicted a marked weakening in the midst of a steady deterioration in business climate. The length, breath and duration of the economic slowdown has been unprecedented and the contraction in business activity widespread across diverse industries. The economic storm, in other words, wiped out numerous companies. And given the fact that the value of business continuity or disaster recovery, and risk management reduces in sync with rising risks of a company?s possible liquidation, demand for BC/DR solutions not surprisingly dipped to depressing levels. With the value of business continuity solutions being directly related to the probability of a company?s sustained survival into the future, the bleak future of a number of companies and their high odds against survival through the recession into the post recession period therefore took its toll on the market. Corporate failures were especially high in banking and financial services, BPOs, telecom, media & entertainment industries.

For the upcoming years, market prospects remain encouraging. Bailout and rescue packages offered by governments as succor to bleeding companies have largely helped companies in most industrial sectors like automotive and manufacturing make a successful turnaround. This coupled with the fact that chances of business failures are extremely high after a disaster in the absence of a business continuity plan will drive up adoption of BC/DR solutions in the post recession period. Also, increasing market penetration, continued innovation, spiraling competition will continue driving down prices of BC/DR solutions making them more affordable, thus expanding market opportunities to include small and medium scale businesses.

IT infrastructure upgrades in healthcare, educational, financial and government sectors will benefit the market in the upcoming years. Resurgence in business activity and improvement in IT infrastructure spends are primary factors that will help drive growth in the market over the next few years. Outsourcing business continuity projects to save on internal resources will gather momentum in the upcoming years. Also, the realization of the fact that it is easy to overlook business continuity during times of economic prosperity is brought full circle by the recent recession as mirrored in the deadly battlefield for a massive number of companies unprepared for the recession. Companies in the future will focus more dedicated resources into tested business continuity plans to ensure protection against future disasters.

The US represents the largest regional market. Stringent regulatory mandates and intense Federal initiatives to promote adoption of BC/DR as a key strategy among organizations to safeguard the interest of overall economy has and will continue to boost market prospects for BC/DR solutions and services in the country. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Solutions represents the largest market segment, while Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Services remain the fastest growing market segment waxing at a CAGR of more than 11% over the analysis period.

Large Enterprises represent the largest and the fastest growing business end-use sector for BC/DR solutions and services. Characterized by huge, heterogeneous and distributed operations with 24/7 functioning, large-scale enterprises often have huge volumes of data to be stored, safeguarded and retrieved, which makes them a market segment laden with tremendous potential. Stronger financial muscle to support end-to-end business continuity and disaster recovery projects additionally makes large enterprises a valuable customer cluster for BC/DR solutions and services.

Major players in the marketplace include Acronis Inc, Autonomy Corporation Plc, CA Technologies Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Citrix Systems Inc, EMC Corporation, FalconStor Software Inc, Hewlett-Packard Company, IBM Corporation, ICM, NetApp Inc, Oracle Corporation, SunGard Data Systems Inc, Symantec Corporation, Vision Solutions Inc., and VMware, Inc.

The research report titled Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Solutions and Services: A Global Strategic Business Report by Global Industry Analysts provides a comprehensive review of market trends, issues and growth drivers. The report provides market estimates and projections in US$ Million across all major geographic markets including US, Canada, Japan, Europe (France, Germany, Italy, UK, and Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Rest of World. Glee's Dianna Agron: Quinn Still Misses New Directions (omg!)

Glee's Quinn Fabray may be rocking a crazy 'do and acting like she doesn't care, but in truth, the former Cheerio truly misses New Directions.

Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows

After giving up her and Puck's child and losing boyfriend Finn (Cory Monteith) to Rachel (Lea Michele), Quinn (Dianna Agron) returned to McKinley High this year with a new perspective on life: Nothing matters anymore.

"She's just been through so much," Agron tells TVGuide.com of Quinn's sudden turnaround. "You know how it is when you're in high school and you don't know if maybe you've made all the right choices, but you want to be an adult and you want to own something. She wants to own something."

Check out our gallery of TV's best love triangles

Despite smoking with her new "friends" under the bleachers and refusing to reunite the unholy trinity, Quinn did gaze wistfully at the glee club she's vowed to leave behind by the end of the season premiere. "How can she not miss that?" Agron says. "These are her friends and no matter if she's had turmoil with them, especially with some of the guys, they're people that supported her. She had a baby and nobody shunned her, so as much as she wants to be different and step outside of that, I think it would be dishonest to not have her have some feelings of longing for that."

Her destructive ways will come to a head in Tuesday's episode, when she's faced with the return of Shelby (Idina Menzel), who had adopted her baby in Season 1. While Agron played coy and refused to say how this will affect Quinn, you can expect her veneer to crack as she grapples with the identity crisis that may keep her from future interactions with baby Beth.

Glee airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Fox.

1st GOP trial opens in Pa. corruption scandal (AP)

HARRISBURG, Pa. ? Driven by a hunger to expand their power base, top Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives illegally used millions of dollars in taxpayers' money, employees and equipment to compile massive databases of information about state voters to boost the potency of GOP campaigns, the lead prosecutor said Monday as the corruption trial of three former officials opened.

The trial "is about powerful people taking the public's money and using it to expand and enhance their campaigns," Chief Deputy Attorney General Frank Fina told the Dauphin County jury of six men and six women in his opening statement.

Fina identified former House Speaker John Perzel as the moving force behind an alleged scheme that initially tapped tax-paid computer specialists in the House GOP caucus but eventually widened to including the hiring ? mostly at public expense ? of out-of-state consultants to develop customized computer programs and provide data about voters' political preferences and lifestyles.

Despite Perzel's guilty plea last month, Fina said responsibility is shared by others including the three defendants: former Rep. Brett Feese, a one-time House GOP whip and former head of the House Republican Campaign Committee; Brian Preski, Perzel's former chief of staff; and former Feese aide Jill Seaman.

Perzel, who lost his Philadelphia House seat in last year's election, and five other officials who have pleaded guilty to reduced charges in the case are all expected to testify, Fina said.

Preski's lawyer, William Winning, told the jurors any responsibility for the wrongdoing belongs to Perzel and others, not his client.

"Brian is not a criminal. He's not a thief. He didn't steal any money from the taxpayers of Pennsylvania and he ... is not criminally responsible for what happened," said Winning, the first defense lawyer to address the jury.

County Judge Richard Lewis has said the trial is expected to last about eight weeks.

Fina said one consultant ? New Orleans-based GCR & Associates Inc. ? received a total of $9 million in public funds over several years for work that was largely tailored to political campaigns, including a product called "Candidate Connect" that Fina called "an A-to-Z guide for Republican candidates."

Another consultant, a Washington-area company called the Weiss Micromarketing Group, sought to analyze voters by scrutinizing such habits as their magazine subscriptions and favorite supermarkets. Based on that information, they were assigned to lifestyle groups with names like "The Affluentials," "Urban Cores" and "Country Comfort," Fina said.

Hasselbeck has 2 TDs, Titans beat Broncos 17-14

Chris Johnson, Joe Mays, Wesley Woodyard

By TERESA M. WALKER

updated 4:24 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Titans won the game. How long they'll lose receiver Kenny Britt remains to be seen, though it didn't look good as he limped to the sideline.

Matt Hasselbeck threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Graham with 4:24 left, and the Titans rallied for a 17-14 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The Titans (2-1) lost Britt, the AFC's leading receiver, when his right knee buckled underneath him in the second quarter, and he was carted to the locker room. Hasselbeck found other players to throw to, including Graham, whose first catch of the season came against his former team.

Hasselbeck passed for 311 yards and two touchdowns to lead Tennessee to its second straight win.

The Titans intercepted Kyle Orton twice, sacked him once and also stopped Willis McGahee on fourth-and-goal at the 1 early in the fourth quarter.

Denver (1-2) drove to the Titans 38 before Will Witherspoon sacked Orton, and two plays later, Jason Jones batted Orton's pass into the air. Witherspoon picked it off with 1:39 left to seal the victory.

A veteran signed to mentor rookie Jake Locker and to win now, Hasselbeck did just that as Denver held Chris Johnson to only 21 yards on 13 carries in his third game back from his contract holdout. Hasselbeck took control on the go-ahead drive that started at the Tennessee 5, completing passes to five different receivers, with the longest a 58-yarder to tight end Craig Stevens. He also tossed a 14-yard TD to Nate Washington.

Britt, who had 271 yards receiving coming into the game, was hurt with 5:55 left in the second quarter. He had just caught a swing pass from Hasselbeck, eluded a tackler and tried to turn upfield when he fell to the ground and lost the ball. The Titans forced Denver to go three-and-out, then punter Brett Kern came up with Tennessee's longest rush this season.

Denver called the Titans dirty a year ago after winning in Nashville. Tennessee racked up a season-high 11 penalties for 80 yards compared to just one for Denver on a facemask Sunday.

But Tennessee outgained the Broncos 333-231, and Denver didn't score a point off two fumbles recovered. That included a fumble by Hasselbeck recovered at the Titans 13 late in the third quarter.

At the end of that drive, Denver coach John Fox took a timeout, pulled kicker Matt Prater off the field and went for it on fourth-and-goal. Derrick Morgan, Tennessee's first-round pick a year ago, stopped McGahee for no gain.

The Titans led 10-7 at halftime before Orton took control of the third quarter with a 16-play drive using up more than eight minutes. He converted four third downs with completions, the last a 5-yarder to McGahee for a TD and a 14-10 lead with 1:17 left in the quarter. Orton was 9 of 10 for 51 yards on the drive.

Denver rookie Von Miller sacked Hasselbeck, knocking the ball loose, on the ensuing drive. That gave Denver the ball at the Titans 13 and seemingly all the momentum.

Hasselbeck completed 10 of his first 11 passes for 125 yards and a TD. He even connected with Johnson on a 34-yard pass down the left sideline that Fox challenged to make sure the running back got both feet in on the catch.

Stray Dogs Issue in Russian and Ukrainian cities

Have you ever seen a pack of stray dogs hanging around in the street? When have you last heard a report about stray dogs that killed or seriously injured an old lady? Who is going to compensate to the parents of an 11-or-so year-old boy or girl who will never smile again because of face muscles injuries in a dog attack? And finally, who is responsible for your children?s security and safety when they are on a regular walk in a park?Unfortunately, the problem of stray dogs in Russia and Ukraine is still a pressing one. The most reported aspect is dog packs aggressiveness and is not the only one, and we are not going to discuss it too much: we have nothing to do with those lists of killed and injured in an accidental confrontation.

Surely it is human?s irresponsibility that causes so many problems not only to humans themselves but the dogs as well. Stray dogs starve severely, unless fed at dumps or by tender-hearted people and as a result show aggressiveness. This aggressiveness is not inherent to these dogs considering the fact that these dogs that have been ?lovable? pets before they got kicked out of their homes to wonder on the streets. It is a well-known fact, and there is nothing to argue about.http://www.pets-chat.com?>Dogs do not attack without a reason. And if thinking about the reason globally, this aggressiveness is only a response towards not only those people who let them lead a miserable street life, but to all these silent observers. In our countries (I mean Russia, Ukraine and perhaps, our nearest East-European neighbors) the stray dogs legislation varies from none to deficient, and is usually limited by some local norms of mercy killing or (in a better case) sterilization and returning back to the street. All the shelters in Russia (let me note in brackets that, for example, in Saint-Petersburg with a stray dogs number coming to 10 thousand (!) there is only one big shelter that really does something to make the life of street dogs better, which almost always means to help them not to be street dogs any more.) are privately owned and unsupported by governmental bodies. I?m not going to lecture you about how all this is well-organized on the so-called ?West?. Because ?organized? is not really the right word. In Great Britain, for example, almost all the shelters are private or privately-financed to a significant level. And they do function and actually perform their duties. They do give animals the second and the third, and all the further chances to find the loving masters they deserve. So the most important thing is neither money nor legislation, it?s our attitude. European human rights fetish what we often find obsessive, lets them think not only of people, but of man?s friends as well. They find ?personal? traits of their more important than the actual breed of the dog, that?s why mixed-breed dogs and dogs with non-identified origin are more likely to find new home, while in our countries there are sometimes even breed dogs abandoned on the street. Perhaps, it?s a feature of our mentality that we perceive pets not as nearly-human beings, but as toys, sometimes very expensive, but toys.

Yes, I?m going to quote Saint-Exup?ry once again, but not the phrase that you?re expecting. I find it even more applicable to our life: ?To start living, you?re to take responsibilities first?. So, shall we start?

Outsourcing Accounting For Small Businesses ? Sale Digital ...

Accountants in Bristol

At the start, all tasks and jobs related to a small business, such as, making sales and invoicing to compiling monthly accounts, are undertaken by the small business owner. When a business is evolving, there are more and more administration tasks to be done and they need to be completed.? For a business owner who is trying to run the business single-handedly, it often means that there is less time for actually making money.

For a person who runs a small business, a most significant area is to save money and reduce costs. To outsource a number of the time-consuming administration tasks, even if at first it does not appear like a great idea, is a way to reduce costs. It could seem like you are taking on yet another expense to add on to all of the others, however, a point comes when all tasks cannot be finished by one person.? Options become limited to employing someone to help or to outsource. If your business has attained this stage then the first task that you should consider outsourcing is your accounting and bookkeeping.

Ensure you recognise what is required.

Making the choice to own a small business is a large decision on its own.? It involves using personal interests, passions and skills. Due to your situation as a small business proprietor, an automatic skill at bookkeeping and accountancy is not the case.? When you are at this stage, outsourcing is the best choice. A qualified accountant makes sure that accounting tasks are dealt with by professionals, and will render the business with accurate accounting and business management advice.? Therefore, by outsourcing, the business owner can focus on the main job of earning money.

How Expensive is Outsourcing?

Initially, outsourcing accounting can seem to be costly.? This is so if looked at on entirely the hourly rate. If you are looking at the amount in this way then retain in your mind that a qualified professional that deals with accounting all of the time will be far more productive with their time than you are able to be.

To decide whether to outsource or not is to time how long you spend making your own accounts over a period of time.? It is one of the best ways to put an actual time on how long you spend each month. When you have worked out how much time you take to make your accounts, calculate how much more money your business could have pulled in if you had spent that time working instead of doing your administration jobs. If you earned more money in the same time period by working than the cost of an accountant to complete the job, then you should think about outsourcing.

Looking For the Right Accounting Service.

There is a recognised format for submitting accounts to the Inland Revenue which is the same for a large company or small business. Even though a small business may only have a few entries in their accounts, the same information is required at year end. When locating the right accounting service to suit your business, you must consider how the business may develop in the future.? In addition, ensure that the accountant is certified to look after your immediate accounting requirements and also your business requirements in the future.

Making the First Step

After finding a suitable accountant, the small business owner must ensure that they give the accounting firm all of the data they demand.? This is so when they start they have all of the necessary information to build a good accounts history, working with focus for you. A crucial point to remind yourself of is that having good links in communication and a free flow of material allows the outsourcing operation to run more smoothly.

When the small business owner chooses to outsource accounting jobs to a qualified professional, a broad amount of pressure and liability is transferred.

The business is then able to run with greater efficiency because the right skill sets are in the right places. Via outsourcing accounting tasks? the small business owner can open up paths into larger business resources.? They will be able to get the business experience of their accountant who can give advice to can help business develop.
