Video analysis: Iole and Meltzer question Lesnar?s strategy at UFC 141

Brock Lesnar chose to slug it out with Alistair Overeem at UFC 141. He lost and then walked away from the sport.

It was a shocking approach to take against one of the more accomplished strikers in the division, especially knowing Lesnar's strength is the takedown game.

Yahoo! Sports' experts Kevin Iole and Dave Meltzer spoke about Lesnar's gameplan and why it unfolded the way it did.

Japanese vending machine doubles as WiFi hotspot -- no purchase required

It looks as if facial scans for snack-dispensing purposes isn't the only mind-blowing feature on the whiz-bang generation of vending machines. Japanese company Asahi has just unveiled an advanced dispenser that's capable of doubling as a WiFi hotspot, so good luck getting through the mobs of leechers just to buy a soda. The machine sends out the internet waves free of charge and covers about 164 feet around it; of note, there's a 30-minute limit on each session -- but it's nothing that a fresh login can't solve. Asahi is planning on rolling out 1,000 of these in the upcoming year, but if you don't call the Land of the Rising Sun your home, you won't be able to experience the smart vendors anytime soon. Now, if only this same magic would slide over to park benches, blades of grass and molecules of oxygen, we'd be content.

U.N. complains to Iraq over attack on dissident camp (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? The United Nations has complained to Iraq about mortar attacks this week on an Iranian dissident camp near Baghdad and has won a promise that they will be stopped, a U.N. spokesman said on Thursday.

Two mortars hit Camp Ashraf on Sunday, just days after Baghdad extended a year-end deadline for the facility to be closed as the United Nations negotiated resettlement of 3,000 residents there.

Camp Ashraf, 40 miles from Baghdad, has been home for 25 years to the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran, or PMOI, an Iranian opposition group the United States and Iran officially consider a terrorist organization.

The U.N. special envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, "raised the reported mortar attacks ... with the Iraqi competent authorities, who confirmed that these attacks did indeed take place," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The Iraqis "promised to ensure that these attacks cease and to hold the perpetrators accountable," Nesirky said.

U.N. officials could not say whether the Iraqi authorities had given any indication of who they believed was responsible for the attacks.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said last week he had agreed to extend the deadline for closing the camp on condition the United Nations transfer about 400 to 800 residents to other countries before the end of this year.

Camp Ashraf's future became unclear after Washington turned it over to Iraq in 2009. Baghdad has repeatedly said it does not want the guerrilla group on Iraqi soil.

In the 1970s the group led a guerrilla campaign against the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran but after the 1979 Islamic revolution also turned against Iran's new clerical rulers. It was hosted in Iraq by former leader Saddam Hussein, a bitter foe of Iran.

The Paris-based leader of the PMOI, Maryam Rajavi, said on Wednesday that 400 members were ready to move from Camp Ashraf to a new location as a goodwill gesture. She said they would travel to a sprawling former U.S. military base known as Camp Liberty near the Baghdad airport "at the first opportunity."

In a statement on Thursday, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which is linked to the Mujahideen, said the 400 were ready to move as early as Friday. But U.N. officials said it was not likely to start for several days.

The NCRI said on Wednesday there had been a total of three attacks this week on Camp Ashraf using 107mm Katyusha rockets. It blamed them on the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps "and its Iraqi agents."

Moscow rally urges release of opposition activist (AP)

MOSCOW ? Several hundred demonstrators have rallied in downtown Moscow to urge the release of a prominent Russian opposition activist and other political prisoners.

Sergei Udaltsov, the leader of the Left Front movement, has been in custody since the fraud-tainted Dec. 4 parliamentary election. He first was held on claims of staging an unsanctioned rally and then sentenced Sunday to another 10 days in jail on charges of resisting police.

Udaltsov has denied the charges and spent much of the month on a hunger strike.

Thursday's demonstration wasn't sanctioned by authorities, but police didn't intervene.

Russia has been rocked by massive protests against election fraud, which have dented the authority of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who wants to extend his 12-year rule by reclaiming the presidency in March.

3 NATO troops killed in eastern Afghanistan

(AP)? KABUL, Afghanistan ? Three NATO service members have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a U.S. military convoy.

NATO's statement said that the deaths occurred Tuesday, but provided no further details about the incident or the nationalities of the troops.

The Taliban said the attack took place in Paktiya province, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Kabul.

The latest deaths bring December's toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 23, for a total of 539 deaths so far this year. The yearly tally is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The number of wounded has remained high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

Also Tuesday, a community council leader in the Musa Qala district of restive Helmand province was shot and killed by insurgents along with his 20-year-old son and two-year-old grandson, the governor's office said.

A statement from the office said the attack occurred late in the evening, as council leader Adbdul Baqi was heading home from his office. There were no further details.

The U.S.-led coalition has started transitioning parts of Helmand to the government as part of a plan to cede full control of the country's security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

CASABLANCA, Morocco (AP) ? Inaugurated by popstar Jennifer Lopez in front of the cream of Moroccan society, Casablanca's first mega mall, complete with two-story-high aquarium, is dripping with glamour and luxury.

While developers describe it as a step bringing Morocco closer to the ranks of the developed world, detractors worry that it is a vanity project that a country teetering on the edge of an economic crisis can ill afford.

Morocco at first seems a curious choice for what its developers are billing as the biggest mall in Africa. It already has world-renowned traditional bazaars featuring exquisite ceramics and rugs that draw tourists from across the globe.

The North African kingdom of 32 million is home to the largest income inequalities in the Arab world ? and now hosts Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior and Ralph Lauren boutiques and department store Galeries Lafayette in the new mall, a futuristic, bulbous silver structure perched on Morocco's coast overlooking the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

It is a stark symbol of the contrasts of a country with 8.5 million people in poverty that ranks 130 out of 186 on the U.N.'s human development index, but will still host acts like Shakira and Kanye West for a summer concert series.

The 20-minute coastal drive from downtown Casablanca ? Morocco's largest city ? to the mall showcases the complexity of the country, with slums hidden from sight by high walls, construction areas for new shopping centers and finally the villas and night clubs of the wealthy.

"It is a great honor for Morocco to have a project of such dimensions," said Salwa Akhannouch, head of the Aksal group and the driving force behind the mall, at its opening this month.

Most Moroccans will not be shopping at the mall.

The country has some of the lowest literacy and highest unemployment rates and the highest income disparity in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the Gini coefficient, a statistical tool used by economists to measure the inequality of distribution in a country. The disparity has been growing every year.

Crowds packed the mall in the weeks after it opened, ambling through sunlit galleries and gazing at the aquarium and the 350 stores on offer. Periodically, colorfully dressed performers, some from as far away as Eastern Europe, would burst into enthusiastic dance routines to the accompaniment of loud drums.

There were few shopping bags in sight, however, and most seemed just curious to finally see this much-talked-about monument to shopping that has been four years and $260 million in the making.

"There is a big gulf between the rich and the poor and the rich just seem to be getting richer and the poor, poorer ?the mall is a symbol of that," said Hassan Ali, a 45-year-old shopkeeper selling handtooled leather jackets in Casablanca's modest old quarter.

Tourism is a vital part of the mall's plan, according to its secretary general, Jenane Laghrar, who anticipates 20 percent of its estimated 12 million annual visitors will come from abroad. She said sales for the first week were on target.

"When you enter the mall, you see Gucci and Dior, but don't forget you have the largest content in Africa ? at the same time you have more affordable brands," she said.

There is also an aspiring middle class that wants to be able to buy these luxury products, she added.

The hope is also that European tourists will add to their usual itinerary of beaches and the exotic cities of Fez and Marrakech, a trip to Casablanca ? and the mall.

Laghrar said they are especially hoping to attract visitors from the rest of Africa who pass through Casablanca airport on their way to Europe.

For now, however, visitors from Africa make up less than 5 percent of Morocco's tourists, with the vast majority still from Europe.

This could well be a problem as the European continent sinks into crisis, said economist Najib Akesbi, and in fact Europe's woes pose a dilemma for the Moroccan economy as a whole, which is deeply intertwined with its neighbors across the Mediterranean.

Morocco's main sources of hard currency, including foreign investment, tourism and remittances from its workers abroad, overwhelmingly come from Europe. On Dec. 20, the government reduced growth projections for 2012 by half a percentage point in response to Europe's crisis.

"The world is entering a period of crisis, the next four or five years are not going to be years of prosperity," warned Akesbi, who teaches at the Hassan II Institute for Agronomy in the capital Rabat.

For him the Morocco Mall is part of a bet Morocco is making that it can become a kind of Dubai for the western Mediterranean, attracting consumers from across Africa and Europe to make up for weak local demand.

"It is a bit of a fragile model," he said. "The success depends less on durable local demand than betting on foreign demand."

The mall's developers point to Morocco's consistent growth of between 4 and 5 percent for the past few years as a sign that the economy can support this kind of luxury shopping.

Those growth figures, however, are not producing jobs, and unemployment overall is at least 8 percent, while for those under 34 it is a staggering 30 percent.

Pro-democracy demonstrations that rose up in Morocco earlier this year have faded away, but there are still regular protests by the millions of unemployed university graduates across the country, frustrated at their prospects.

Investment has not been in sectors like industry that produce a lot of jobs, rather in retail, services and infrastructure that have not been creating the employment the nation needs, said Akesbi.

And the economy is still at the whim of the annual agricultural harvest. Part of the reason for the country's steady growth recently has been good weather.

"Here we are in 2011 and the economy is still largely determined by the sky," said Akesbi. Even though only 25 percent of the economy relies on agriculture, it employs 40 percent of the work force and a bad harvest can hurt other sectors.

The government budget is also dangerously overstretched, after it increased food subsidies and raise government salaries in a bid to stave off the anti-government unrest sweeping the Arab world.

The Morocco Mall project was conceived in the headier days of the mid-2000s when it was decided that what the country needed was more shopping centers.

While Europe falters, the wealthy oil states of the Gulf are playing a role in building a more consumerist Morocco.

Half the funding for Morocco Mall comes from the Saudi Al-Jedaie Group which has built malls across Saudi Arabia and two new initiatives looks set to shower Morocco with Gulf money.

NBA fans tune in to basketball's return with big television ratings for Christmas games

NEW YORK - NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday attracted large audiences, with the Bulls-Lakers matchup drawing the third-highest preliminary rating for a regular-season game on ABC. The 6.5 overnight rating trailed only a 7.3 for last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and a 7.9 for another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.3 overnight, up 77 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast. It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game.

The earlier night game on ESPN ? Magic-Thunder ? drew a 1.9 overnight, up 36 percent from to last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 5.6 overnight, up 6 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

The Celtics-Knicks game on TNT to open the day drew a 4.1 overnight. The early game on ESPN last year, Bulls-Knicks, had a 2.7 on ESPN.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

Ethiopia jails two Swedish journalists for aiding (Reuters)

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) ? An Ethiopian court sentenced two Swedish journalists on Tuesday to 11 years in prison for helping and promoting the outlawed Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebel group and entering the country illegally, a judge said.

Reporter Martin Schibbye and photographer Johan Persson were arrested in July after they entered Ethiopia's Ogaden province from Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region with a team of ONLF fighters.

"The court has sentenced both defendants to 11 years. We have heard both cases ... and we believe this is an appropriate sentence," Judge Shemsu Sirgaga told the court.

Both journalists looked at the judge without expression as the sentence was being read out and then translated by their defense lawyer, a witness said. No family members were present.

The sentencing is likely to cause outcry in Sweden, where last week's guilty verdicts provoked anger in Swedish media amid accusations the case had taken on a political dimension.

The journalists' lawyer said his clients were weighing the option of an appeal, but that for now there was no talk of pleading for clemency.

"We are only talking about the possibility of appealing for the time being, which follows judicial procedure," defense lawyer Sileshi Ketsela told Reuters.

Edison Mission Energy Closes $242 Million Financing For Three Wind Energy Projects with 204-Megawatt Capacity

Edison Mission Energy (EME), a subsidiary of Edison Mission Group, announced that it has closed a $242 million financing for a portfolio of three contracted wind energy projects in two states representing 204 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity. The transaction was priced at 250 basis points over LIBOR with step-ups through maturity for the 10-year term loan.

The wind projects in the portfolio include two sites operating in Oklahoma, the Taloga project, commissioned earlier this year with a gross generating capacity of 130 MW and the Buffalo Bear project, commissioned in 2008 with a gross generating capacity of 19 MW.? The third site in the portfolio is the Pinnacle project nearing completion of construction in West Virginia, which will have a gross operating capacity of 55 MW when operational.? The projects sell electricity generated to utilities and public agency customers under long-term power purchase agreements.

The financing package consists of a 10-year $214 million fully amortizing term loan facility, and 10-year letter of credit and working capital facilities totaling $28 million.? Approximately $96 million of the credit facilities related to the Pinnacle project will be available when the project achieves certain completion milestones.? EME expects construction to be completed and the requirements to be satisfied in the first quarter of 2012.? Funding available from the term loan facility when drawn will be distributed to EME for general corporate purposes, net of transaction costs.

An Edison International (NYSE:EIX) company, Edison Mission Group? is one of the largest developers of wind energy projects in the U.S. with a current portfolio of 31 projects in operation or under construction in 11 states with a total generating capacity of nearly 2,000 megawatts.

Iowa still goes first in the presidential nominating contests, followed by New Hampshire. But voters there have lost their outsized influence in personally sizing up nominees, as televised debates and social media take precedence.?

The 2012 caucuses and primaries are finally upon us, and now it can be said: Iowa and New Hampshire may be a thing of the past.

What's fading is not their place in the celestial order as hosts of the first nominating contests, but rather their outsize role in personally sizing up Republican nominees.

An obscure Democratic governor named Jimmy Carter set the paradigm in 1975, when he essentially took up residence in Iowa and shook countless hands on his way to becoming the top named vote-getter in the 1976 caucuses. The Georgia governor's upset victory set him on a path to the presidency.

When Iowa Republicans caucus on Jan. 3, chances are the voters will know more about the candidates from nationally televised debates and interviews than from personal interaction. Ditto the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 10.

"If the protester is Time's person of the year, then the debate is the primaries' theme of the year," says Republican strategist Ford O'Connell.

Contrary to popular belief, there have not been more Republican debates than there were four years ago. In 2007, GOP contenders took part in 15 debates; this year, they had 13. But the 2011 debates have been more memorable, in part because the field has been so fluid. Over time, Iowa has had a succession of six front-runners. And when a new one rises up ? say, Texas Gov. Rick Perry ? he or she becomes the focus of attention in debates, both by the other candidates and the moderators.

That means more questions and attacks, which increase the possibility of a stumble. Governor Perry's stunning brain freeze in the Nov. 9 debate, where he could not remember the third government agency he would close, sealed his fate as yesterday's news.

Herman Cain benefited from the debates, as they gave him a platform to show off his charisma and "9-9-9"-infused sound bites. When allegations of sexual impropriety emerged, viewers tuned in to the debates to see what he would say.

Ron Paul's quirky authenticity shines through in debates, helping the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman build a devoted following that is unparalleled in this cycle.

Debates have also been central to a candidate's revival. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared mortally wounded in June when most of his staff resigned over his unorthodox campaign strategy. He was ridiculed for taking a Mediterranean cruise, rather than the Holiday Inn circuit around Iowa. And he appeared woefully out of touch in tough economic times when he defended his $500,000 line of credit at Tiffany's.

Motorola To Face Injunction Due To Apple's Photo Gallery Patent?

File under: News

After Motorola's recent win in Germany -- where the Mannheim Regional Court ruled that Apple Sales International infringed on a patent held by Motorola -- Apple seems to be fighting back.

Motorola might see an injunction on February 16, according to Florian Mueller. The Munich I Regional Court could very well grant it against Motorola because of its products that "implement a certain method for flipping pages in a photo gallery". The court may find this implementation as an infringement of a European patent Apple is currently holding (EP2059868).

Mueller notes that the court is rather convinced of the validity of the patent and believes "the Android photo gallery constitutes a violation of that patent at least in its "zoom in" mode and possibly (though this is not yet certain) in its "zoom out" mode". The same patent was the object of a case against Samsung -- where a European preliminary injunction against Samsung Galaxy smartphones was imposed -- but the Korean phone-maker found a way around the patent by modifying the bits found on its phones.

Scars remain from Gingrich ethics case (AP)

WASHINGTON ? On Jan. 21, 1997, one of the most memorable days in congressional history, Newt Gingrich became the first House speaker to be reprimanded by his colleagues for ethical misconduct.

The 395-28 vote, to reprimand him for bringing discredit on the House for failing to ensure his use of tax-exempt groups was legal, was historic by itself. But Gingrich's peers didn't stop there. They fined him $300,000 for misleading the House ethics committee and causing it to extend a costly investigation.

Fifteen years later, the case has come back into focus as the fight for next year's Republican presidential nomination has resuscitated a political career once thought to be all but over.

The ethics committee back then made no finding on whether Gingrich's use of tax-exempt groups to raise money was illegal. It said it would let the Internal Revenue Service determine if any tax laws were broken. In 1999, the IRS said they were not.

In settling the case, Gingrich acknowledged he gave false information to the ethics committee in denying that a Republican political action committee he led ? GOPAC ? was connected to a college course he taught that was funded by tax-exempt organizations.

GOPAC, in fact, was involved in developing what was supposed to be a nonpartisan college course, the committee said, and Gingrich's denial was "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable."

Gingrich said in recent comments on the campaign trail that more than 1 million pages of documents were turned over to the ethics committee that investigated him, and that 83 charges were repudiated as false. "The one mistake we made was a letter written by a lawyer that I didn't read carefully," he said.

But he also accused the ethics committee of being partisan and said, "The way I was dealt with related more to the politics of the Democratic Party than the ethics." The committee, then and now, has an equal number of Democrats and Republicans.

The ethics findings, unhappiness of many Republicans with his leadership, and his resignation as speaker after 1998 GOP election losses left Gingrich with scars that seemed to doom his political career. It didn't revive until last month, when the former speaker surged to the top among Republican presidential hopefuls.

Gingrich's ethics investigation consumed more than two years. Democrats were rabid in their insistence that the speaker broke House rules. And they wanted revenge. Years earlier, Gingrich and others had filed an ethics complaint against a Democratic speaker, Jim Wright ? a case that led to Wright's resignation in 1989.

If Gingrich wins the GOP nomination, Democrats are certain to remind voters of this piece of baggage. The ethics report in 1997 portrayed him as unethical beyond the case at hand. Without details, it said that "over a number of years and in a number of situations, Mr. Gingrich showed a disregard and lack of respect for the standards of conduct that applied to his activities."

The genesis of Gingrich's ethics case goes back to 1990, when he was No. 2 in the House GOP hierarchy. Democrats had a stranglehold on the majority dating back to 1955, and Gingrich knew that If Republicans were ever to take back the House, they had to recruit hundreds of thousands of new voters.

He developed a television show in 1990 and a college course in 1993, using tax-exempt organizations to help finance them and spread his message: Replace the "welfare state" with an "opportunity society" centered in part on Republican, free enterprise economic principles.

"Based on the evidence, it was clear that Mr. Gingrich intended that the (television show and college course) have substantial partisan, political purposes," the ethics committee found.

That was a problem. U.S. tax law provides a way for people to make tax-deductible donations to certain groups as long as those groups stay away from partisan politics. The groups are often called 501c3s because that's the section of the IRS code that gives them tax-exempt status.

Gingrich's TV show and college course originally were a project of his GOPAC political action committee. But after they started consuming a substantial portion of the political committee's revenues, Gingrich and others transferred the project to the Abraham Lincoln Opportunity Foundation. The foundation was a tax-exempt 501(c)3 group that had been dormant but was revived to sponsor the televised workshop.

The foundation operated out of GOPAC's offices, and virtually all its officers and employers were simultaneously GOPAC officers or employees. The main difference between GOPAC and the foundation was the $260,000 in tax-deductible contributions the foundation raised to fund the TV program and the workshops.

Gingrich tried to protect his donors' tax deductions by keeping out references to Republicans and partisan politics in the TV show and college course. The course was taught originally at the public Kennesaw State College in Georgia in 1993 and the private Reinhardt College in 1994 and 1995. Gingrich and another professor each taught 20 hours.

The partisanship came in when Gingrich arranged "workshops" across the country for people to see his lectures and the TV show. A purpose of the workshops was to recruit voters who would support Republicans, the ethics committee said.

It cited documents in which Gingrich describes the purpose of the TV show and college course.

"The objective measurable goal is the maximum growth of news coverage of our vision and ideas, the maximum recruitment of new candidates, voters and resources, and the maximum electoral success in winning seats from the most local office to the White House," Gingrich wrote.

He said in numerous writings that the college course was part of his "Renewing American Civilization" movement to replace the "welfare state." The course and the movement had the same name.

In a 1993 document Gingrich said the goal of the movement was "replacing the welfare state, recruit, discover, arouse and network together 200,000 activists including candidates for elected office at all levels" leading to "a sweeping victory in 1996."

He didn't have to wait that long. In the 1994 election, Gingrich engineered a Republican takeover of the House. The GOP held the House majority for a dozen years until Democrats regained it in 2006. Last year, Republicans took it back.

Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor

World's first production-ready Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor will work with any Bluetooth version 4.0 "Smart Ready" smartphone or computer.

Developed by leading consumer blood pressure monitor OEM/ODM ? IDT International Ltd ? and based on the class-leading performance of the Nordic ?Blue? nRF8001 chip ? this blood pressure monitor is now undergoing final FDA (U.S.) and MDD (Europe) medical certification further to the formal adoption of the first Bluetooth low energy Blood Pressure profile and service by the Bluetooth SIG on October 25.

DECEMBER 15, 2011 ? RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today announces that IDT International Limited ? one of the world's leading OEM/ODMs (Original Equipment/Design Manufacturers) of consumer blood pressure monitors for global medical brands ? has announced that it has successfully developed the world's first Bluetooth low energy (or Bluetooth "Smart") blood pressure monitor, which is expected to be ready to go into volume production by March next year after receiving final FDA (U.S.) and MDD (Europe) medical certification.

?

This product will mean that any smartphone, computer, or health hub equipped with Bluetooth version 4.0 "Smart Ready" (as Bluetooth low energy-compatible devices will now be marketed to consumers) will be able to communicate with a wireless Bluetooth low energy/Smart blood pressure monitor and send collected (systolic and diastolic) data via SMS or email to healthcare providers ? or even just concerned relatives ? including automatically alerting any unusually high or low readings immediately. The device will also record the user's resting pulse and detect any irregularities in their heart beat, allowing these parameters to be remotely monitored too, can support two separate users, and give voice instructions and readings to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations (such as "your blood pressure is normal / slightly high / high").

?

The nRF8001's class-leading ultra-low power performance has allowed IDT to achieve the same 4-6 month operating life from four AA batteries for its Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor as its existing standalone designs under typical operating conditions (2x readings per day).

?

Hong Kong-headquartered IDT International is a world-leading developer and manufacturer for top consumer brands of a wide range of medical and sports & fitness devices ? including consumer blood pressure monitors ? and this expertise has allowed it to develop the first publicly disclosed Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor that it confidently expects to have passed FDA and MDD approval (for which it is now being submitted) by March 2012.

?

"We see our Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitor as a game changer for the consumer mobile health market," states Danny Leung, Engineering Manager of IDT's medical and sports & fitness division. "It can be used by anyone [the end user has to do nothing more than put the cuff on their upper arm and press a button] and means that for the first time collected data can be sent via SMS or email to remote locations using a device that in many cases the user will already own [e.g. a smartphone or computer] and be able to use for no additional cost."

?

"This means mass-market, low cost remote blood pressure monitoring for all suddenly becomes a commercial reality," adds Geir Langeland, Nordic Semiconductor's Director of Sales & Marketing. "And this will be a welcome development for already critically over-stretched healthcare providers and agencies looking for new ways to cope with hypertension issues caused by a rapidly aging population [everyone is at risk of developing high blood pressure as they age] and explosion in lifestyle-related high blood pressure risk factors such as obesity."

?

"But medical will not be the only use case, and I expect Bluetooth low energy blood pressure monitors will spur the development of a whole new range of consumer-targeted Bluetooth low energy-based health and medical apps that could include new ways of collecting, interpreting, and displaying blood pressure data ? including even motivational social media-based data and progress sharing where blood pressure and indeed resting pulse become as universally accepted health parameters as weight and body fat are today."

?

Bluetooth low energy (now a hallmark of the latest Bluetooth v4.0 specification) has been designed from the outset to extend Bluetooth wireless connectivity to compact, battery (as small as coin cell) powered devices such as consumer medical monitors. Nordic has been at the forefront of the group that defined the Bluetooth low energy specification since becoming a foundation member of Nokia?s Wibree Alliance in 2006 (the Alliance became part of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) in June 2007). Nordic contributed decades of expertise ? gained in producing successive generations of class-leading proprietary and interoperable (ANT/ANT+) ULP wireless connectivity solutions within a field it pioneered. Christmas is a really big deal in Japan

TOKYO (majirox news) ? Christmas lights line the streets of Tokyo, and crowds head toward the stores to buy gifts from staff wearing Christmas hats and Santa Claus outfits. It?s hard to believe you?re in Japan.

They give gifts, eat roast chicken and a special Christmas cake (which is a glorified strawberry shortcake with icing), round sponge cakes, and whipped cream and juicy strawberries to celebrate, even though Dec. 25 is not a national holiday. Some go to special dinner shows, fancy restaurants or hotels.

Many spend their money on Christmas trees and decorate their homes with evergreens and other seasonal decorations.

The holiday is getting bigger every year, but it is mainly commercial because only about one percent of the Japanese are Christians. According to a survey by Japan-guide.com, about 54 percent of Japanese say Christmas is special to them, especially women and teenagers.

The Japanese have adopted other Western traditions, including Halloween and Valentine?s Day.

Christmas first came to the country with the first Europeans in the 16th century, and only became popular in recent decades, as people from all over the world have come to Japan.

'Thorpe too late for London Olympics'

Comeback kid Ian Thorpe has left his run too late and is unlikely to qualify for next year's London [ Images ] Olympics [ Images ], according to the former coach of Australian swimming great Grant Hackett.

Dennis Cotterell, who trained Hackett to Olympic gold in the 1,500 metres at the 2000 Sydney [ Images ] Games and at Athens four years later, said five-times Olympic champion Thorpe had "probably" underestimated the time needed to get back up to speed.

"Thorpie really hasn't allowed himself enough lead-in time to make the team, it's as simple as that," Cotterell told the Australian newspaper on Friday.

"Never knock a champion because he's achieved great things but he has given himself less than a year from his announced return in February to win selection and in my estimation that's not going to be achievable."

Ian ThorpeThe 29-year-old Thorpe, who quit in 2006, has underwhelmed in his first competitive swims, and finished 16th overall in the 100 metres freestyle and 10th in the 200m at the Italian Winter Open in Riccione at the weekend.

Thorpe and Australia's [ Images ] head coach Leigh Nugent both dismissed concerns about his progress as premature.

"He's trying to pack into a year what in reality is a two-year assignment," added Cotterell, who helped prepare China's current 1,500m world champion Sun Yang for Shanghai, where he broke Hackett's long-standing world record.

"No matter how good you are ... he's been out of swimming for nearly six years and that's a long lay off.

"You can stay fit and healthy but that's a lot different from having a competitive edge at the top level of the game.

"He's swimming well but he's not where he would like to be or needs to be."

Thorpe has trained mostly in Europe since his comeback but is expected to return to Australia to swim at the Victorian Championships in January before the Olympic trials in March.

New Scientist 2011 holiday quiz

Caveman fashion, a giant of both science and literature, Trekkie dreams and much more in our end-of-year quiz

AS IS clear to anyone who possesses even the most cursory interest in the news, future historians will almost certainly mark 2011 as the year of the first robot-insect wars.

Robots were the aggressors, and they proved to be canny combatants, stealing strategies from the living world. Some adopted new forms based on the Venus flytrap that could fuel themselves on the flesh of insects (22 October, p 24). Meanwhile, others tried out a robot chameleon tongue for longer-range strikes (16 April, p 26).

While this momentous development obviously dwarfs all other events, it wasn't the only thing that happened in 2011. Try our traditional end-of-year quiz to see if you are a truly dedicated follower of science. If you need a helping hand you can look up the answer in the relevant issue.

US

1) Early humans may not have been as brutishly accoutred as we once believed. That is according to a report from 26 February which described what tentatively inferred flowering of caveman fashion?
a) In north-eastern Africa, Homo ergaster carried crocodile-skin bags
b) Siberian Denisovans sported fur hats
c) Italian Neanderthals wore bird feathers
d) French Cro-Magnons suffered in high heels

2) Watching seven straight hours of television specials over the holidays might send you slightly haywire, but seasonal consumption could have an even more profound effect on your being. In our 1 October issue, we described how the workings of your DNA could be modified by genetic material from:
a) Turkey meat
b) Cranberry sauce
c) Brussels sprouts
d) Eggnog

3) The scent of a woman's tears has a surprising effect on men, as we revealed on 15 January. Does it:
a) increase men's spending in subsequent shopping trips
b) send them to sleep
c) reduce their ability to read maps
d) diminish sexual arousal

4) A landmark in the evolution of human speech came with the loss of our air sac - "a balloon-like organ that helps primates to produce booming noises", according to an article on 26 NovemberSpeaker. The piece reports the result of an experiment involving plastic tubes and puffs of air, which suggests the earliest human utterance may have been:
a) Ugg
b) Duh
c) Mama
d) Unaccustomed as I am

5) A lucky few can master both art and science. On 5 February, we reported on a certain literary giant's scientific research, now vindicated by a modern study. Was it:
a) Anton Chekhov's work on the cultivation of trees of the genus Prunus
b) Fyodor Dostoevsky's work on the psychology of addiction
c) Vladimir Nabokov's work on the genitals of butterflies
d) Ivan Turgenev's work on the astronomical calendar of a Siberian tribe

THEM

6) Drugs are in our schools, below the waves as above. What variety of high fish did we report on 29 January?
a) Canadian trout chilling out on Prozac, which is being piped into the St Lawrence seaway via the sewers
b) Brazilian piranhas hopped up on caffeine, brewed by guarana berries dropping into the Rio Negro
c) Soused herring, drinking in the waste products of a vodka distillery that leaks into a lake in Finland
d) Psychedelic seahorses of Suriname, which derive LSD from their diet of really, really colourful shrimp

7) If you happen to be partial to rodent meat, steer clear of the African crested rat. As we explained in an article on 6 AugustMovie Camera, it can deter or kill hungry jackals and lions by:
a) Being swallowed whole and eating its way out from inside their stomachs
b) Being swallowed whole and using its spines to lodge itself in their oesophagus
c) Chewing poisonous bark and daubing the toxins into a special tuft of its own spongy hair
d) Chewing poisonous bark and spitting the toxins in its assailant's eyes

TWO-FACED TECH

8) Cloaking devices, replicators, teleportation... these Star Trek-esque technologies may already seem like old hat to the readers of New Scientist. But which other Trekkie dream did we report as a real possibility on 12 March?
a) doors that go phshhht
b) universal translators
c) photon torpedoes
d) tractor beams

9) The awesome power of technology to be annoying and intrusive may know no bounds. An article in our 7 May issue described a clever new way to bombard us with advertising images by:
a) projecting them onto the windows of moving cars
b) projecting them onto the ground in front of a pedestrian
c) projecting them onto clouds
d) burning them permanently into your retinas

THE END

10) Whimper if you will, but one day the universe is probably going to end. What ghastly new kind of cosmic catastrophe did we report on 24 September?
a) The big slap (parallel universes collide)
b) The big snap (lack of information destroys all matter)
c) The big slurp (space and time get sucked down the cosmic plughole)
d) The big burp (blast of energy escapes from a giant white hole)
