Israel and Gaza militants exchange fire, 5 killed (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israeli aircraft struck at Palestinian militants on Saturday, killing five, while militants responded with a volley of rockets which injured several Israeli civilians, Israeli and Palestinian officials said.

Exchanges of fire are common between southern Israel and the Gaza strip controlled by the militant Hamas group, but this is the worst one in months.

An Israeli military spokesman said the militants from the Islamic Jihad group in Gaza were hit as they were preparing to launch more rockets at Israel.

He said that the targeted cell was the same as had fired rockets into southern Israel on Wednesday night. No Israelis were injured in that attack.

The military "will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians," the spokesman said. He spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with military protocols.

Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Adham Abu Salmia confirmed that five men were killed and another 11 injured in an explosion inside a militant training site in the southern part of the coastal territory.

After the airstrike, militants in Gaza fired over 10 rockets at southern Israel, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Islamic Jihad took responsibility for the barrage.

One of the rockets exploded outside an apartment building in the southern city of Ashdod, injuring at least one person, Israel's rescue service said. Israeli television showed about a dozen cars in flames outside the building.

Another person sustained shrapnel wounds in the nearby town of Gan Yavneh and others in the Ashdod region were treated for shock, the Israeli military spokesman said.

Israel's Channel 2 television reported that one rocket hid a school, causing massive damage. No one was hurt because the school was closed for the Jewish Sabbath, Ashdod Mayor Yehiel Lasri said.

Islamic Jihad took responsibility for firing the rockets in a text message to reporters, and released photos of the rockets being launched from the backs of pickup trucks. The group said this is the first time they are using this system as opposed to firing them from launchers on the ground.

Islamic Jihad is one of the militant groups in Gaza that frequently fires rockets at southern Israel cities, prompting Israeli reprisal strikes.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmed had earlier confirmed that one of its local field commanders, Ahmed Sheikh Khalil, was killed. He said Khalil was one of the group's chief bomb makers. "Today it was a great loss for us in the Islamic Jihad," he said. "The size of our retaliation will equal our loss," it said in a text message sent to reporters.

"Our response shall be in the depths of the Zionist entity," it said in reference to the Israeli heartland.

The Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad took responsibility for multiple suicide bombings and shooting attacks against civilians in Israel during the second Palestinian intifadah, or uprising, in the first half of the last decade.

Israel and Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza, blamed each other for the flare up in violence Saturday.

"The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip," the Israeli military said.

Israel as a matter of policy holds Hamas liable for violence perpetrated by any of the different armed groups in the coastal territory.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum meanwhile said Israel is "fully responsible for all the results of this dangerous escalation."

In the winter of 2008, Israel launched a broad military offensive inside Gaza aimed at stopping almost daily Palestinian rocket fire at Israeli communities.

Since then, violence has continued sporadically along the border and Palestinians continue to launch mortars and rockets at Israel, but to a much lesser degree.

On Wednesday, militants fired a long-range Katyusha rocket that exploded near Ashdod in the south of the country.

Sirens also went off in the central Israeli city of Rehovot, which unlike many southern Israeli cities is not accustomed to rocket fire, causing panic. The Israeli military said the alarm went off because the rocket exploded in an area between the two cities.

(AP) ? Israeli aircraft struck at Palestinian militants in Gaza on Saturday who responded with a volley of rockets which rained on southern Israeli towns, Israeli and Palestinian officials said. Palestinian officials said nine militants were killed, while on the Israeli side one civilian was killed and four others were wounded.

Exchanges of fire are common between southern Israel and the Gaza strip controlled by the militant Hamas group, but this is the worst in months.

Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Adham Abu Salmia said nine people were killed and 15 wounded in separate attacks on militant targets.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said one Israeli civilian was killed and four others wounded when Palestinian rockets exploded in residential areas in southern Israel.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed a total of four strikes in Gaza, saying the military hit Palestinian militants from the Islamic Jihad, one of several groups in Gaza which fires rockets into southern Israel. The spokesman said that the first attack specifically targeted a cell responsible for a Wednesday rocket attack that exploded deep inside Israel. That attack had caused no casualties.

The military "will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians," the spokesman said. He spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with military protocols.

The Israeli military released video footage taken from a military drone Saturday afternoon that shows Palestinians unloading rockets from a truck and preparing them for firing at Israel. The strike took place shortly afterward.

Abu Salmia, the Gaza health official, said five people had been killed and 11 wounded in the first attack. Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmed confirmed that one of its local field commanders, Ahmed Sheikh Khalil, was among the dead. He said Khalil was one of the group's chief bomb makers. "Today it was a great loss for us in the Islamic Jihad," he said. "The size of our retaliation will equal our loss," it said in a text message sent to reporters.

Islamic Jihad took responsibility for firing the rockets in a text message to reporters, and released photos of the rockets being launched from the backs of pickup trucks. The group said this is the first time they are using this system as opposed to firing them from launchers on the ground.

One rocket hit an apartment building in the southern city of Ashkelon and injured a 50 year-old Israeli who later died of his wounds, Rosenfeld said. Another exploded outside an apartment building in nearby Ashdod, injuring one person. Israeli television showed about a dozen cars in flames outside the building.

Another Israeli sustained shrapnel wounds in the nearby town of Gan Yavneh and others in the Ashdod region were treated for shock, the Israeli military spokesman said.

Israel's Channel 2 television reported that one rocket hid a school, causing massive damage. No one was hurt because the school was closed for the Jewish Sabbath, Ashdod Mayor Yehiel Lasri said.

Late Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned the mayors of cities hit by Palestinian rockets. Netanyahu said the military had hit rocket launcher squads responsible for the attacks and said "the military's response will be tougher if needed."

After the rocket barrage, Abu Salmia said that a second Israeli attack killed two people. Islamic Jihad confirmed that they were militants. Israel's military spokesman said that the second air strike had hit "terrorists that fired rockets on Israel in the evening,"

Abu Salmia said another Israeli strike late Saturday killed two more militants bringing the total to nine.

Sirens also went off in the central Israeli city of Rehovot, which unlike many southern Israeli cities is not accustomed to rocket fire, causing panic. The Israeli military said the alarm went off because the rocket exploded in an area between the two cities.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said that Israeli diplomats "will protest against the indiscriminate rocket attacks on Israeli civilians to the U.N. Secretary General." He said a similar letter sent after Wednesday's attack has yet to be answered.

Google Storage Available to All

Google made its Google Storage API available to all today. This is the service that is likely to make Google AppEngine?useful, as the existing BigTable storage system was just too painful for words and not designed for large blobs. Its certainly feels a bit slicker in execution than AWS S3 and has a more polished user experience from a getting started perspective. It was several months after S3 launched before somebody built a third party browser that would allow you to look at you buckets online.

They use a similar model to S3 of unique bucket names, so get in quick in you want a bucket called ?test? or ?src? :-) ?The naming conventions for objects are restricted, so you cannot expect to upload an arbitrary directory of files and expect it to succeed. The uploading process must perform some kind of name mapping process that converts illegal names to legal ones.

The do make a big deal about allowing developers to specify whether buckets and their contents are located in Europe (where in Europe?)?or not ?but read the T&Cs carefully. Section 2.2 makes it clear that Google can process your data just about anywhere including the US. It?s only ?data at rest? that can be specified as stored in Europe. So all your data is essentially available to US agencies should that choose to take a peak. The most lame restriction in the T&C?s is the restriction on using Google Storage to create a ?Google Storage like? system. Let?s put a layer in front of Google Storage that is like Google Storage but slower and less resilient and costs more, oh I definitely want to sign up for that service :-)

They provide a version of the excellent Boto library that has been repurposed for use against Google Storage, this is the best indication yet that the Google API?s must be pretty close to the S3 APIs in structure. The main difference is the use of OAuth to give fine grained access to the storage objects. This is the biggest win for Google and I hope to see Microsoft Azure, RackSpace CloudFiles and AWS S3 following suite fairly quickly.

It would also be great to see the Boto changes for Google Storage rolled back into the Boto mainline.

Turkey survivor emerges from quake rubble (AP)

ERCIS, Turkey ? A 13-year-old boy, trapped for five days inside fallen debris, used a rock in a desperate attempt to dig a hole and free himself from a building that collapsed in a massive earthquake that struck eastern Turkey, his uncle said Friday.

Rescuers from Azerbaijan pulled Ferhat Tokay out of the debris of a multistory building early on Friday, the latest survivor to emerge from the devastation of the 7-2-magnitude quake that leveled buildings and killed at least 570 people.

Some 2,500 were injured in the temblor that brought down about 2,000 buildings and left thousands homeless.

Tokay was working in a shoe shop on the ground floor of a multistory building in Ercis when the quake hit on Sunday.

"With a rock, he tried to open up a hole," the uncle, Sahin Tokay, told NTV television hours after the rescue. "He thumped on walls to try to open up a space for himself."

Tokay said the boy also placed shoes under his head and used them as a pillow to sleep, peering through a tiny gap to distinguish between day and night.

"He was hungry on the first day, but the hunger pangs later disappeared," Tokay said.

The state-run Anatolia news agency said the boy drank rain water which helped keep him alive.

For the family who had anxiously waited outside the crumbled building for days, Ferhat's rescue was a miracle.

Rescue teams sent the boy's father and other relatives away from the site to get some rest in the early hours of Friday, saying there was no chance of finding him alive. Soon after, they were called back with news that the crew had reached him.

"He didn't even have a scratch on him!" the uncle said.

Television footage showed the boy smiling at people standing around his hospital bed.

"He said he was hungry and asked for food," he uncle said.

"He also got his father to promise not to play tile rummy (in coffee houses) anymore" Tokay said in reference to a popular pass-time for men in Turkey.

The 213-person team from the Azeri Special Risk Rescue Service, equipped with sniffer dogs, have pulled out 10 survivors since arriving to offer services late Sunday, including Tokay and 18-year-old Imdat Padak who was brought out late Thursday.

Attesting to the dangerous nature of the rescue operations, rubble fell on a sniffer dog called Cip while searching for Padak inside a gap, seriously injuring its paws, the Azerbaijani team said.

The government's crisis management center said a total of 187 people have been freed from rubble alive. Search and rescue operations have ended in the provincial capital of Van, but were continuing in Ercis.

Turkish authorities delivered more tents after acknowledging distribution problems that included aid trucks being looted before they reached Ercis. Tents, prefabricated homes, blankets and heaters also started arriving from a dozen countries, after Turkey said asked for assistance to help shelter people left homeless in near-freezing conditions.

Israel, which has a troubled political relationship with Turkey, sent emergency housing units, blankets and clothing. Britain, Ireland, Germany, Russia, Romania and Ukraine also contributed.

About 2,000 buildings have been destroyed and authorities declared another 3,700 buildings unfit for habitation.

Shell posts $6.98 billion profit in Q3 (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Europe's largest oil company, says profits doubled to nearly $7 billion in the third quarter because of higher oil prices and one-time gains.

Shell said Thursday net profit was $6.98 billion, up from $3.46 billion in the third quarter of 2010. Revenues rose 33 percent to $127 billion.

Shell booked a net $245 million in various one-time gains, notably the sale of a refinery in Britain. That compares with net charges of $1.4 billion this time a year ago, mostly due to impairments on assets after an accounting review of its operations in Canadian heavy oil sands and its refining arm.

"Our third quarter results were higher than year-ago levels, driven by higher oil prices and Shell's performance," said Chief Executive Peter Voser in a statement.

The results were better than the $6.54 billion analysts polled by FactSet had expected, and shares rose 1.3 percent to euro26.24 in early Amsterdam trading.

The company did not mention any financial fallout from an oil spill at its Gannet Alpha platform in the North Sea.

"Whilst ongoing concerns around safety issues and government tax takes persist, these are currently outweighed by the strength of the company's operating performance," said analyst Richard Hunter of Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers in a note on the earnings. He rates shares a Buy.

Global oil prices have risen 48 percent from this time a year ago.

The company said its production earnings were $5.44 billion, up 58 percent exluding one-time gains in both years.

Production fell 1.6 percent to 3.01 million barrels of oil per day, but Shell said that would have been a rise of 2 percent, comparing like for like. The company disposed of around 100,000 worth of production and its mature fields suffered declines, but it added 270,000 barrels of new production at projects in Qatar, Nigeria and Canada.

"Dare we say it but things appear to be going very smoothly for Royal Dutch Shell," said analyst Richard Griffith of Evolution Securities in a note on earnings. He also rates shares a Buy.

The company has been investing intensely in new capacity and plans to bring 20 new projects on line by 2014.

At Shell's "downstream" arm, which includes its refining activities, oil products and sales of chemicals, earnings increased 25 percent to $1.81 billion, excluding one-time gains in both years. The company cited healthy margins on its chemical products, as refinery margins were unchanged and intake fell.

Experts challenge China's 1-child population claim (AP)

BEIJING ? A Chinese claim that without its government's severe family planning limits world population would have hit the 7-billion mark years earlier is drawing fire from demographers who call it baseless and unscientific.

A report by the official Xinhua News Agency that was carried on news websites and in newspapers said China is responsible for preventing 400 million births with its one-child policy ? a set of restrictions that were launched three decades ago limiting most urban families to one child and most rural families to two.

"The population of China would now be around 1.7 billion had it not been for the family planning policy," Xinhua quoted Zhai Zhenwu, director of Renmin University's School of Sociology and Population in Beijing as saying. "And the world's population would have hit seven billion in 2006."

The estimates and the defense of the one-child policy are not new. But with the United Nations projecting that global population will hit 7 billion on Oct. 31, the milestone has refreshed debate about the global need for population control and whether China, still the world's most populous country, serves as model.

Many demographers deny that the one-child policy curbed 400 million births and say China's methods must not be copied.

"A draconian birth control policy is not the answer to the world population problem," said Cai Yong, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and an expert on China's population. Cai said Zhai and the government are "rewriting China's fertility reduction history."

Cai and Wang Feng, director of Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy, last year published a paper in China Reform, a Chinese-language policy discussion magazine, debunking the 400 million figure.

They argue that between 1979 and 2009, China averted 200 million births, half the government estimate. They arrived at the number by calculating what the population would have been if China had maintained its 1979 fertility rate of 2.75 and comparing it to the 2009 fertility rate of 1.7 and population.

Zhai, the professor quoted by Xinhua, said he knows Wang and Cai's paper. Though he stands by the 400 million figure, he said it covers a period that begins a decade earlier than the one-child policy when China began encouraging later marriages and fewer children.

"It's an estimate anyway," he said. "And there are many different numbers out there but it doesn't change the basic fact that the policy prevented a really large number of births."

Behind the debate over the 400 million figure is larger campaign about whether and when the government should relax the family-planning limits. Cai and Wang argue that the policy has worsened the country's aging crisis and the imbalanced sex ratio by encouraging families with a preference for male heirs to abort baby girls.

"I think many people like to have these simple large numbers that are easy to recognize, and impressive, but unfortunately it's baseless, it's unscientific," said Wang. "The Chinese government likes to use this as a way to support, to justify the continued implementation of the one-child policy, which is long outdated."

The scholars say that China's biggest drop in fertility came from 1970-79 before the one-child policy was introduced and that the reductions since then have been largely due to economic and social reforms that make small families more attractive.

Cai said China's fertility rate, or the number of children the average woman is projected to have in her lifetime, dropped by more than half from 5.8 in 1970 to 2.7 in 1979. The one-child policy was introduced in 1978 and formally launched nationwide in 1980, and since then the fertility rate has fallen to about 1.5.

Wang notes that other countries with similar reductions in fertility rates over the last few decades, such as Thailand and Iran, saw those changes occur without imposing a one-child policy.

"Thailand and China have had almost identical fertility trajectories since the mid 1980s," he said. "Thailand does not have a one-child policy."

How to Create a Fake Identity and Stay Anonymous Online [Evil Week]

How to Create a Fake Identity and Stay Anonymous OnlineYou don't need to have evil motives for wanting to fake your identity or go incognito online; for many people, it's a matter of privacy and avoiding spammers and scammers. Thankfully, there are a great many tools for staying anonymous online. Here are a few of the best.

The Browser's Incognito Mode

The private browsing mode in Google Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers records no information about your browsing, including form data you enter, files you download, or history of pages you visit. It's handy for many things beyond porn. To launch a window in private browsing mode, use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Chrome and Opera: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox, Internet Explorer: Ctrl+Shift+P

For Safari, go to Safari > Private Browsing.

What about mobile devices? Use an alternative mobile browser that will clear your browsing history for you automatically, such as our pick for best web browser on iPhone, Atomic Web Browser, or Android browser top pick, Dolphin.

Private Browsing Tricks

If you want to open your browser in private mode all the time, add a simple switch to your browser's shortcut.

We've also previously mentioned a Firefox extension called Private Browsing Window, which starts a new private browsing window in Firefox without closing your old ones.

Proxy Servers and VPNs

Although private browsing mode is great for preventing sites from writing trackable cookies and other info to your computer, it doesn't completely make you anonymous. If you want the most assurance that others won't know who you really are, you'll want to use a proxy server and/or a virtual private network connection so you can appear to be someone and somewhere else.

The free Tor software is one of our favorites for anonymizing our online sessions. It routes web requests through multiple tunnels, preventing sites from knowing who or where you are.

If you want to set up your own secure secure, encrypted system to access on the go, you can do this usingHamachi and Privoxy, tunneling traffic using your own home computer.

Another alternative is previously mentioned Windows app CyberGhost VPN, which is free for up to 6 hours of surfing or 1GB of downloading.

Disposable Email Addresses and Anonymous Email Sending

Disposable email address services hide your real email address and keep the spam out by giving you a temporary email address that forwards to your real one. There are so many different disposable email services to choose from, and we've mentioned quite a few. Spamgourmet is one of the earliest services and still great. You might also like Trashmail, which as we mentioned before, offers Firefox and Chrome extensions for convenience.

When it's time to send an email message or SMS, use a tool like previously mentioned Sharpmail.

Fake Identity Creators

Trying to stay anonymous can be difficult with all the forms websites require you to fill out. You can make up fake information yourself or, better yet, use something like previously mentioned Fake Name Generator to create a realistic fake ID that'll fool web forms.

Looking to disappear and establish a new identity in real life? We've got some excerpts from How to Disappear that can help you formulate a plan to ditch Big Brother and disappear forever. Photo by gaelx.

Consumer confidence tumbles, home prices stagnate (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Consumer confidence unexpectedly dropped to its lowest level in two-and-a-half years in October, while house prices were unchanged at low levels in August, suggesting the consumer is still struggling.

Taken along with recent regional manufacturing data that hinted at stabilization in the sector in October, Tuesday's U.S. data underscored the view that the economy should avoid another recession, though growth will be slow.

Confirmation of a growing but sluggish U.S. economy is expected from U.S. gross domestic product data for the third quarter on Thursday, but the surprising drop in consumer confidence suggests the recent bounce back from a weak first half year may not be sustained.

U.S. third quarter GDP due on Thursday is expected to show the economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.5 percent, up from 1.3 percent the prior quarter, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

"For everybody that's excited that growth is going to be somewhere in excess of 2.0 percent in the third quarter, you should not think that's sustainable," said Anthony Chan, chief economist at JPMorgan Private Wealth Management in New York.

"A lot of that is going to come off as we go into the fourth quarter."

The Conference Board said its index of consumer attitudes in October fell to its lowest level since March 2009 as consumers fretted about job and income prospects. However consumer confidence does not always correlate well with consumer spending or retail sales, economists noted.

CONSUMERS FEELING GLUM

The Conference Board's index of consumer attitudes fell to 39.8 from a upwardly revised 46.4 the month before. Analysts had expected a reading of 46.0.

The expectations gauge was also at its lowest level since March 2009, just before the economy officially crawled out of recession.

Consumer attitudes have soured since the spring, hit by fears of a renewed recession, political gridlock, high unemployment and volatility in the stock market.

With consumer spending accounting for about 70 percent of the economy, economists say the recovery will be hard pressed to make significant headway until confidence improves.

"Consumer spending has slowed because confidence has deteriorated, and these numbers are very, very consistent with that view," said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors LLC in Albany, New York.

"You can't look at these numbers and be optimistic about growth in 2012."

Earlier this month the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading of sentiment for October also showed consumers' attitudes sagged, though not as sharply.

HOUSE PRICES STABILIZE AT LOWER LEVELS

In Tuesday's other main economic report, the S&P/Case Shiller composite index of house prices in 20 metropolitan areas was flat compared with the month before on a seasonally adjusted basis, frustrating expectations for a gain of 0.1 percent.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, prices fell in 14 of 20 cities, with Atlanta and Las Vegas among the biggest losers, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller data.

The annual rate of decline slowed, however, with prices in the 20 cities down 3.8 percent compared with a year-over-year decline of 4.1 percent the month before. That still was a bigger drop than the expected 3.5 percent decline in August.

Analysts said the weaker-than-expected home price data was disappointing but not altogether shocking as the market struggles to get out from under a glut of unsold homes and ongoing foreclosures that are holding prices down.

While prices are forecast to remain depressed for some time, any further declines are expected to be modest.

"This has been a five-year process and I think we are at least closer to the end of the hemorrhaging in housing prices than we've been in a long, long time," said Chan.

The struggling housing market continues to be one of the biggest hurdles for the economic recovery as attempts to bolster the sector have had limited success.

In the latest efforts, the Obama administration said on Monday it would expand a mortgage refinancing program in a step that could help up to a million borrowers.

"I'm glad that they're trying. This was a clever idea. But more needs to be done," Yale economist and index co-founder Robert Shiller told Reuters Insider.

A separate home price index from the Federal Housing Finance Agency showed prices declined 0.1 percent in August from July.

The index is calculated using purchase prices of houses financed with mortgages that have been sold to or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.

In other U.S. economic data on Tuesday, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond showed manufacturing in the region was unchanged in October with the composite index at minus 6.

New orders improved to minus 5 from minus 17, but employment gauge worsened to minus 7 from positive 7.

U.S. stock prices dipped and U.S. Treasury bond prices rose after the weak consumer confidence data, but in financial markets, the day's data was eclipsed by the cancellation of a meeting of European finance ministers that added to doubts about the region's efforts to tackle its debt crisis.

However, European leaders still planned to hold a summit on the issue on Wednesday as scheduled.

Galaxy Nexuxs

Here we go again. Somewhere along the way, someone got it in their head that Samsung Galaxy Nexus has Gorilla Glass. Only it doesn't. And so far as we can tell, there's never been an official spec listing that said it did. And today, Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, tweeted that, in fact, the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass.

Repeat: The Galaxy Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass. Oh noes.

Any you know what? That's too bad. We like Gorilla Glass. But don't write off a phone you haven't yet seen in person over a spec that it never had in the first place. That makes as much sense as writing it off for having a PenTile display that you've yet to see in person. See where we're going here? Let's everybody take a breath and actually check out the phone before damning it for not having something.

Casino officials told The Associated Press the 25-time Grammy winner known for top hits including "Superstition" and "You are the Sunshine of My Life" will be its top performer one year after an exclusive grand opening bash that featured Jay-Z and Coldplay.

This year's party is slightly more accessible than last year's invite-only affair ? a limited number of tickets start at $250 and include an open bar.

The New Year's Eve show caps a year of entertainment at the Cosmopolitan that featured top acts including Adele, the Flaming Lips and Deadmau5.

Wonder's concert will stream to partiers on the Las Vegas Strip, which will shut down to vehicle traffic and fill up with tourists.

Lisa Marchese, the Cosmopolitan's chief marketing officer, said Wonder has proven over several decades of performing he can appeal to audiences young and old.

In June, the former child prodigy was honored at the Apollo in New York with induction into the Legends Hall of Fame, joining Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald.

But Wonder, who has seven Billboard No. 1 singles, got top billing in September at the Austin City Limits music festival, which featured dozens of acts including Coldplay, Kanye West and Arcade Fire.

"He's gotten cool again in a whole different way with a young group of people who didn't grow up with his music," Marchese said. "He's legendary, he's an impresario, he's contemporary but old school in this really unexpected way."

Marchese said other acts and surprises would likely be added to the show, and other acts will perform throughout the property, including Mayer Hawthorne at a lounge on the casino floor.

Caterpillar masters slowdown, posts record results (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Caterpillar Inc muscled through murky economic conditions with a surprising 44 percent jump in quarterly profit, and forecast strong demand through next year in a sign of optimism for the global economy.

The company said on Monday that it expects full-year 2011 profit and revenue to set records on the back of surging sales for mining equipment and construction machinery in most markets around the world -- suggesting the underlying health of the global economy may not be as dire as is widely believed.

Caterpillar executives expect that momentum to carry into next year, with sales rising up to 20 percent above the expected record $58 billion in sales in this year.

"We're having a great year in 2011, and 2012 is shaping up to be better," said Caterpillar Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Doug Oberhelman.

Stronger demand at the world's largest heavy machinery manufacturer means more jobs and investment. Caterpillar said it hired nearly 5,000 people in the quarter.

The company typically breaks out its employment figures on a year-over-year basis, but this time it detailed the improvement from second quarter to third quarter. The comparison showed that Caterpillar is coupling earnings growth with a steady commitment to hiring.

"To the degree that we see continuing increases in demand for our products, it will lead to additional hiring," Chief Financial Officer Ed Rapp said in an interview. Caterpillar's production should continue to rise in the months to come.

The bullish news from the world's largest heavy machinery manufacturer, which follows strong forecasts from the likes of General Electric Co and United Technologies Corp, helped spark an overall rally in the market Monday. The stock gained about 5.5 percent, or $4.77, to $92.16 on the New York Stock Exchange, and accounted for a third of the 125-point gain seen Monday in the Dow Jones industrial average.

"When a big-name company like this reports numbers like these, that will help turn around talk about another recession," said Andrew Bodner, president of Double Diamond Investment Group in Parsippany, New Jersey.

ECONOMY 'NOT AS BAD' AS BILLED

"Record (third quarter) sales and profit results were particularly impressive to us in light of economic challenges in developed nations," Standard & Poor's equity analyst Michael Jaffe said. "Caterpillar's current trends also lead us to expect ongoing demand growth in 2012."

CFO Rapp said the current environment "looks very dissimilar to 2008," when the economy last fell into recession. He said that Caterpillar's finance arm is able to readily fund purchases of machinery, and he said dealers -- many of whom panicked with recession on the horizon a few years ago -- are showing considerable optimism.

"It's just not as bad as people want to make it out to be," Rapp said.

Caterpillar said it ended the third quarter in one of the healthiest positions in its recent history, with backlog orders standing at record levels and higher commodity prices leading to a favorable environment for its growing mining business, which is performing well in a variety of markets in all regions of the world.

"Although there is a good deal of economic and political uncertainty in the world, we are not seeing it much in our business at this point," CEO Oberhelman said. "We believe continued economic recovery, albeit a slow recovery, is the most likely scenario as we move forward."

PENT-UP DEMAND

The construction industry -- influenced by housing, commercial expansion and infrastructure development -- is currently a tale of two sectors. Emerging economies are scrambling to buy enough new equipment to keep up with booming demand. But in mature markets, where construction spending is well below historic trends, customers are simply buying equipment to replace aging machinery.

The company did caution that it is seeing a bit of a slowdown in China's demand levels due to measures the government is taking to tighten the economy. Caterpillar executives, speaking during a conference call with investors, said the slowdown is needed and indicated the company continues to build share in that market.

Rapp said Caterpillar is optimistic about ongoing policy discussions in the U.S. as well. The company expects a glut of "pent-up demand" for new construction to eventually spark new growth in more mature markets.

Caterpillar's forecast outlook indicates the company is successfully "coming to grips with a slower global economy," Longbow Research equity analyst Eli Lustgarten said. Caterpillar is able to succeed in the cloudy environment due to "very big growth outside of the United States and what's been a very strong (machinery) replenishment rate in the U.S.," he said.

Caterpillar reported third-quarter net income attributable to common shareholders of $1.14 billion, or $1.71 per share, compared with $792 million, or $1.22 per share, a year before.

Analysts on average had expected Caterpillar to earn $1.54 per share in the third quarter.

Sales rose 41 percent to $15.7 billion, which is a record, according to the company. Caterpillar earned $1.93 per share on $14.58 billion in sales excluding the impact of the acquisition of the Bucyrus mining business earlier this year.

It now expects annual sales of $58 billion, including the impact of its acquisition of Bucyrus, in 2011. Its previous forecast had been a range of $56 billion to $58 billion.

Profit is now expected to be $6.75 per share for the year, compared with a prior forecast of $6.25 to $6.75. Including the impact of Bucyrus, Caterpillar expects 2011 profit to reach $7.25 per share.

Motorola, on Twitter, says RAZR, Bionic and Xoom will get Ice Cream Sandwich within 6 weeks of code drop (Update: Or not)

Motorola

Update: And proving our point that Twitter isn't exactly the best way to go about something like this, Motorola has deleted any Tweet that references doing anything with a 6-week window. Carry on.

Original: Let's explain (again) what's about to happen here: Motorola, on Twitter, responded to someone with the following:

We'll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it.

The Twitter account later clarified, saying the Droid RAZR, Bionic and Xoom "Will get ICS within 6 weeks of Google's public push," and they'll confirm other devices later on. We'll believe it when we see it. Dunno how many times we've had to say this, folks, but there's a reason carriers and manufacturers don't give precise windows for updates -- and even vague time lines are often missed. (Never mind the fact that "official" information on Twitter and Facebook isn't always as official as you might think.) It was the same way with Froyo updates. It was the same with (and still is, unfortunately) with Gingerbread updates.

The point is this: We have no doubt that Motorola, HTC, LG, Samsung and every other manufacturer is hard at work at figuring out which devices can -- and should -- be upgraded. But if you start a six-week countdown from the instant the Ice Cream Sandwich code drops in AOSP, you're setting yourself up for a big bag of hurt, should things take a little longer than planned. That's not to say we're not hoping for speedy updates across the board. It's just that history has taught us different.

Sofia Vergara Posts Bikini Photos Because She Can

Sofia Vergara makes us laugh every week with hilarious Modern Family quotes, but is only slightly less well known for posing pics of herself online.

The 39-year-old actress took a break from promoting her new chic clothing line at Kmart and kicked back for some R&R in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Vergara uploaded this image of her enjoying some fun in the sun. When you look like that, why not flaunt bikini photos of yourself? Exactly.

"Ciao ciao One&Only Palmilla!!! It was amazing! Te quiero Mexico," the voluptuous, native Colombian beauty wrote on her official Whosay account.

The brunette stunner isn't shy when it comes to flaunting her bombshell curves, but follows rules that allow her to show off her assets tastefully.

"In my 20s, I would have on a miniskirt and the boobs," the mom-of-one said. "Now, if I'm doing something short, I try to cover up [on top]."

"I'm almost 40, so I had to evolve - it's natural. I love tight dresses, but I don't do tight and short at the same time. I do tight and long."

Hey ... whatever works. Just keep the photos coming.

President pays tribute to a dozen big thinkers

President Barack Obama distributed medals on Friday to 12 Americans for their achievement in science, technology and innovation ? and said their work put his own science projects to shame.

"It?s safe to say that this is a group that makes all of us really embarrassed about our old science projects," Obama joked during the White House ceremony. "You know, the volcano with the stuff coming out, with the baking soda inside. Apparently, that was not a cutting-edge achievement, even though our parents told us it was really terrific."

Seven researchers received the National Medal of Science, while five inventors were honored with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

The researchers were recognized for such work as discovering a new property of the DNA helix. The inventors were honored for such contributions as improving energy efficiency and reducing the cost of gas liquefaction and separation, and developing flight-safety sensors used in aircraft worldwide.

"Thanks to the men and women on the stage, we are one step closer to curing diseases like cancer and Parkinson?s," Obama said. "Because of their work, soldiers can see the enemy at night and grandparents can see the pictures of their grandchildren instantly and constantly.? Planes are safer, satellites are cheaper, and our energy grid is more efficient, thanks to the breakthroughs that they have made."

The medals are awarded annually, through programs that are administered by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The science medal program was established in 1959, and the technology medals were first awarded in 1985.

National Medal of Science recipients include:

Jacqueline K. Barton, California Institute of Technology, for discovery of a new property of the DNA helix long-range electron transfer, and for showing that electron transfer depends upon stacking of the base pairs and DNA dynamics.? Her experiments reveal a strategy for how DNA repair proteins locate DNA lesions and demonstrate a biological role for DNA-mediated charge transfer.

Ralph L. Brinster, University of Pennsylvania, for his fundamental contributions to the development and use of transgenic mice.? His research has provided experimental foundations and inspiration for broad progress in germ line genetic modification in a range of species, which has generated a revolution in biology, medicine and agriculture.

Shu Chien, University of California at San Diego, for pioneering work in cardiovascular physiology and bioengineering, which has had tremendous impact in the fields of microcirculation, blood rheology and mechanotransduction in human health and disease.

Rudolf Jaenisch, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for improving our understanding of epigenetic regulation of gene expression, the biological mechanisms that affect how genetic information is variably expressed.? His work has led to major advances in the scientific understanding of mammalian cloning and embryonic stem cells.

Peter J. Stang, University of Utah, for his creative contributions to the development of organic super-molecular chemistry, and for his record of public service.

Richard A. Tapia, Rice University, for his contributions in optimization theory and numerical analysis, and for his dedication and sustained efforts in fostering diversity and excellence in mathematics and science education.

Srinivasa S.R. Varadhan, New York University, for his work in probability theory, especially his work on large deviations from expected random behavior which has revolutionized this field of study during the second half of the 20th century, and become a cornerstone of both pure and applied probability.? The mathematical insights he developed have been applied in diverse fields, including quantum field theory, population dynamics, finance, econometrics and traffic engineering.

National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipients include:

Rakesh Agrawal, Purdue University, for an extraordinary record of innovations in improving the energy efficiency and reducing the cost of gas liquifaction and separation.? These innovations have had significant positive impacts on electronic device manufacturing, liquefied gas production and the supply of industrial gases for diverse industries.

B. Jayant Baliga, North Carolina State University, for development and commercialization of the insulated gate bipolar transistor and other power semiconductor devices that are extensively used in transportation, lighting, medicine, defense and renewable energy generation systems.

C. Donald Bateman, Honeywell, for developing and championing critical flight-safety sensors now used by aircraft worldwide, including ground-proximity warning systems and wind-shear detection systems.

Yvonne C. Brill, RCA Astro Electronics, for innovation in rocket propulsion systems and geosynchronous and low Earth orbit communication satellites, which greatly improved the effectiveness of space propulsion systems.

Here's Who to Thank for Gadhafi's Downfall (ContributorNetwork)

"You have won your revolution." That's how President Barack Obama summed up the news of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi's death, in an address to the Libyan people. Gadhafi's regime terrorized Libyan citizens as well as people worldwide, was believed responsible for several bombings of aircraft, and just months ago was about to crush a rebellion against him.

Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham released a joint statement about the event that opened by thanking the Libyan rebels, as well as America's European and Arab allies, for making the downfall of the Gadhafi regime possible. Almost as a footnote, it mentioned the United States' role in defeating Gadhafi, but simultaneously chastised the administration for not doing it fast enough.

Here's a quick rundown of who actually made it possible:

United States

It is true that in some ways the United States' actions have been a hindrance to the cause of Libyan freedom. Just two years ago, McCain and Graham visited Gadhafi -- Graham at the dictator's home, with video captured of the two shaking hands -- discussing ways to improve America's ties with his regime and transfer military equipment to it.

Despite the chastisement the two gave the Obama administration for "waiting to employ the full weight of our airpower," however, American bombers were making strikes on Libyan airfields and ground forces on the same day that French and British forces began their attacks. America later sent millions of dollars' worth of non-weapon supplies to the rebels.

NATO and Arab allies

NATO Operation Unified Protector coordinated French, British, American, Canadian, and other countries' air attacks on Gaddafi's forces and bases. Only a few weeks into the air strikes, NATO officials reported that over a third of Gaddafi's military had been destroyed. Meanwhile, Turkey set aside $100 million to help the rebels rebuild, while Qatar helped to supply the rebels with weaponry.

Libyan rebels

While NATO attacks demolished Gaddafi's forces by air, and imposed a no-fly zone on Libya, no overt ground forces were sent to the country. The rebels had to fight more or less on their own, in battles where the odds would have been substantially against them if not for other countries having destroyed much of Gaddafi's military.

Oil

The Libyan rebels signed an oil export deal with Qatar, and Libya's refineries and oilfields are prizes eyed by many.
