The First Honest Cable Company Commercial

Cable companies are universally regarded as only slightly more popular than evil dictators, and a little less fashionable than certain strains of STDs. How do you fix something like that? Honesty! We're awful; we're unstoppable; you'll hate us; deal with it. That's something you could respect (and which would be applicable basically everywhere in the world but east Asia). Hell, I'd probably switch to this company if it were real. [YouTube] More »

"Room 237" review: The secrets of the universe, as hidden in "The Shining"

By Alonso Duralde

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - If you thought "The Shining" was simply Stanley Kubrick's film version of Stephen King's novel, you are apparently wrong, at least according to the never-seen interviewees of the new documentary "Room 237." The movie is really an indictment of the U.S. government's genocide of the indigenous population. Or it's the director's attempt to tell a story about the Nazi holocaust. Or it's Kubrick's confession that he helped to fake the Apollo moon landing.

Gaze into the abyss for too long, Nietzsche once noted, and it gazes into you, and "Room 237" feels half like a "Da Vinci Code"-esque unraveling of signs and symbols and half like a cautionary tale of what happens when you watch the same movie over and over and over again. In the final analysis, this is more a glorified DVD extra than a feature film, but movie nerds (and Kubrick buffs in particular) will enjoy at least some of the hair-splitting, whether or not you believe in the theories espoused within.

Director Rodney Ascher ("The S from Hell") employs voice-overs of his subjects talking about their pet theories about "The Shining" and what it really means, and the marriage of description and depiction works very well, especially for moments that would escape the casual viewer. Whether it's a visual joke (intended or otherwise) involving Barry Nelson and an in-box or a background poster that might or might not depict a minotaur, Ascher points out the minutiae that obsessives have zeroed in on.

Whether or not Kubrick would have endorsed these alternate readings of his film, he certainly would have enjoyed the fact that his reputation for perfectionism has apparently shielded him from ever having made a mistake.

"Room 237" points out any number of continuity errors (chairs that disappear, typewriters that change color, even architectural layouts that make no sense), but according to the interviewees, these aren't goofs but rather clues. What would be a flub in the hands of a lesser director can only be signifiers of greater hidden truths when committed by Kubrick.

Amusing and compelling as "Room 237" often is, it all begins to wear a bit thin. Perhaps if we'd gotten to see the faces of people espousing their theories, we could judge for ourselves if they're visionaries or just plain nuts, but all we get are more and more film clips - sped up, slowed down, frozen, overlapping. I found myself torn between wanting to see "The Shining" again immediately and never, ever wanting to see it again.

Other people's obsessions can certainly be fascinating, but all this starts to feel like the cinematic equivalent of being stuck at a dinner party next to someone who can expound for hours about his personal theories regarding the Kennedy assassination.

It's great if you happen to share that interest; otherwise, it's a long night of "Uh huh, really, you don't say."

'Pirate' Site Ad Transparency Report Loses Credibility | TorrentFreak

?Pirate? Site Ad Transparency Report Loses Credibility

The third edition of the Annenberg Innovation Lab?s Ad Transparency Report is now unofficially doing the rounds. Google, Quantcast and Open X are praised for making ?strong moves? to block sites that receive a lot of DMCA notices but the government and some major companies are in for criticism for failing to place their ads more carefully. This week?s ?Piracy is Progress? Times Square campaign is also mentioned in a negative light.

For years the entertainment industries have complained about American companies? advertising appearing on and therefore financially supporting so-called ?pirate? sites. Hollywood and the record labels believe that responsible companies should place their promotions elsewhere, for the sake of both their businesses and the U.S. economy.

To this end it?s common to publicly highlight the fact that U.S. companies are targeting potential customers on sites deemed offensive by the entertainment industries in the hope that their respective branding departments will feel nervous that continued exposure will cause damage to their image.

In advancement of this name-and-shame philosophy, since the start of the year the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California has produced a monthly report aiming to identify the online ad networks and companies offering the most support to ?major illicit file sharing sites around the world.?

The third installment for March 2013 delivers more of the same. The University researchers say they have monitored the top 500 URLs receiving the most DMCA takedown notices as listed in Google?s Transparency Report and from that worked out which ad networks give the most support to ?pirate? sites.

The technique is problematic, mainly due to the fact that just because a site receives a DMCA notice it doesn?t necessarily follow that they have refused to comply and therefore in non-compliance. Plus, these are notices sent to Google, not the sites themselves.

Of all companies online, Google receives the most DMCA notices to the tune of several million per week, but they aren?t considered a ?pirate site? and rightly so. From the report there is no indication that the USC researchers have considered whether the sites in the top 500 are compliant or not.

Ad Networks criticized

The ad networks topping the charts this month are:

1. Propellerads
2. Exoclick
3. Infolinks
4. Adcash
5. Admxr
6. Adsrevenue (New entry)
7. Yahoo/Right Media
8. Adserver (New entry)
9. Trix.net (New entry)
10. Sumotorrent

Google (Doubleclick) were present in the January report but have not appeared since. The same applies to Quantcast but for different reasons. USC appear to have retrospectively modified both of their previously issued reports when discussions with Quancast revealed the ad network had been included in error (they weren?t serving ads in many cases).

?In late February we have had productive talks with Quantcast about our January and February Ad Reports,? USC write. ?We now believe that Quantcast was incorrectly identified as being among the top ten Ad Networks placing ads on infringing piracy sites.?

It?s also worth noting that SumoTorrent, which has appeared in previous USC reports but this month at its lowest position yet, is listed as a large advertising network in its own right. It isn?t. SumoTorrent uses ads from other providers and serves them only on its own sites, SumoTorrent and Seedpeer.

Furthermore, some very basic clickstream analysis reveals several ad networks successfully funding some of the biggest file-sharing sites warrants not a single mention anywhere in USC?s report, which raises serious questions about the validity of the techniques being used.

Brands said to be reporting ?pirate sites?.

While noting that they may not have deliberately placed their ads on the sites in question, Annenberg Innovation Lab still lists many large brands who they claim are providing advertising revenue to sites that have received a lot of DMCA takedown notices.

There are some huge names, not least government related departments including the U.S. Army and National Guard.

From the world of fashion we see Adidas and Gucci. In the online and computing realm we see Amazon, Ancestry.com. AT&T, Bing, Google Play, HP, Verizon, World of Warcraft, Windows 8 and Xfinity. Motoring related brands include Firestone, Ford, Honda, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mini Cooper, Toyota. Sundry others include American Express, IKEA, Pizza Hut and Target.

Finally, and quite unusually, the report takes a shot at this week?s Times Square advertising campaign by the band Ghost Beach.

Speaking with TorrentFreak, band frontman Josh Ocean explained that they hoped the campaign would ?..open a discussion up with our peers about how they felt about music distribution on the internet and the future of the industry,? but the USC researchers frame things differently.

They are suggesting a contrast between what the band are really trying to do versus the actions of a company that took efforts to end associations with piracy earlier this year.

?Whether this is just a publicity stunt or a real counter trend, we can?t help but contrast this to the moves of Levi Strauss to make sure its ads did not appear on pirate sites,? the researchers write.

While Levi Strauss did indeed withdraw advertising from certain sites in January, as far as we know Ghost Beach have never advertised on a ?pirate site? but in fact have spent significant amounts of money through their licensing deal with American Eagle to place advertising for their own product with a completely legitimate agency. Why this latest campaign is even mentioned in the report seems to defy reason.

Moving forward, if this research by USC is to maintain credibility next month and beyond it will need to consider its methodology and accusations more carefully.

While there is undoubtedly plenty of sites in the top 500 domains in Google?s Transparency report that are not DMCA compliant, there will be many that are. Simply looking at DMCA notices sent to Google and from that concluding that the sites they concern aren?t compliant is seriously flawed.

For example, RapidShare ? a company that has made huge efforts to disassociate itself with piracy in recent years ? is in the top 50 sites as listed by Google?s Transparency Report. Is this company not allowed to make a living through advertising anymore, even though it is DMCA compliant?

If it is to remain neutral, USC needs to look at DMCA notices sent to the sites themselves (or obtain data on the same) and then measure how many of those are being ignored before it can start judging what is and what isn?t a ?pirate site?.

Link between faster 'biological' aging and risk of developing age-related diseases

Mar. 27, 2013 ? An international team of scientists led by the University of Leicester has found new evidence that links faster 'biological' ageing to the risk of developing several age-related diseases -- including heart disease, multiple sclerosis and various cancers.

The study involved scientists in 14 centres across 8 countries, working as part of the ENGAGE Consortium (list of research teams is give below). The research is published online today (27th March) in the journal Nature Genetics.

The project studied a feature of chromosomes called telomeres. Telomeres sit on the end of our chromosomes -- the strands of DNA stored in the nucleus of cells. The telomeres shorten each time a cell divides to make new cells, until they reach a critical short length and the cells enter an inactive state and then die. Therefore telomeres shorten as an individual gets older. But, individuals are born with different telomere lengths and the rate at which they subsequently shorten can also vary. The speed with which telomeres wear down is a measure of 'biological ageing'.

Professor Nilesh Samani, British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiology at the University of Leicester and Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit, who led the project said: "Although heart disease and cancers are more common as one gets older, not everyone gets them -- and some people get them at an earlier age. It has been suspected that the occurrence of these diseases may in part be related to some people "biologically" ageing more quickly than others."

The research team measured telomere lengths in over 48,000 individuals and looked at their DNA and identified seven genetic variants that were associated with telomere length. They then asked the question whether these genetic variants also affected risk of various diseases. As DNA cannot be changed by lifestyle or environmental factors, an association of these genetic variants which affect telomere length with a disease also would suggest a causal link between telomere length and that disease.

The scientists found that the variants were indeed linked to risk of several types of cancers including colorectal cancer as well as diseases like multiple sclerosis and celiac disease. Most interestingly, the authors found that in aggregate the seven variants also associated with risk of coronary artery disease which can lead to heart attacks.

Professor Samani added: "These are really exciting findings. We had previous evidence that shorter telomere lengths are associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease but were not sure whether this association was causal or not. This research strongly suggests that biological ageing plays an important role in causing coronary artery disease, the commonest cause of death in the world. This provides a novel way of looking at the disease and at least partly explains why some patients develop it early and others don't develop it at all even if they carry other risk factors."

Dr Veryan Codd, Senior Research Associate at the University of Leicester who co-ordinated the study and carried out the majority of the telomere length measurements said: "The findings open of the possibility that manipulating telomere length could have health benefits. While there is a long way to go before any clinical application, there are data in experimental models where lengthening telomere length has been shown to retard and in some situations reverse age-related changes in several organs."

Banks, energy shares lift TSX on U.S. data optimism

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index advanced on Tuesday, led by the energy and financial sectors, as positive economic data from the United States buoyed investor sentiment. Gains were kept in check as gold shares weakened as an easing of worries over Cyprus lessened the appeal of gold as a safe haven and weighed on bullion prices.

Bank of Canada says to oversee SwapClear due to systemic risk

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Bank of Canada said on Tuesday it would formally regulate SwapClear, the dominant global system for centrally clearing over-the-counter interest rate swaps, because it has the potential to pose systemic risk to the Canadian financial system. The announcement came the same day Canada's banking watchdog designated the country's top six banks as being of systemic importance.

Canada ups financial oversight, tags "too big to fail" banks

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian authorities on Tuesday designated the country's top six banks as "systemically important" to the domestic economy and increased oversight of a widely used global derivatives clearing system in an effort to reduce banking system risk. The so-called too big to fail designation was widely expected by the market and means the six banks will have to keep more capital on hand than required by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision after the 2008 financial crisis.

EADS vote signals resurrection as "normal company"

PARIS (Reuters) - Airbus parent EADS faces the most far-reaching changes in its history as shareholders seek to balance French and German state shareholdings with tough new safeguards against political meddling. Air Canada pension deficit estimate falls on higher plan returns

TORONTO (Reuters) - Air Canada said a preliminary estimate of its pension solvency deficit has dropped to C$3.7 billion ($3.6 billion) from C$4.2 billion a year ago, reflecting a better-than-expected 14 percent return on plan assets. Canada's largest carrier said in a recently filed annual information form that the estimate, as of January 1, 2013, was hurt by a decrease in the solvency discount rate to 3 percent from 3.3 percent. Valuations to determine the actual deficit will be completed in the first half of 2013.

Canada's top six banks to get capital surcharge as of 2016

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's banking watchdog said on Tuesday it sees the country's six largest banks as being of systemic importance to the domestic economy and that it will make them keep 1 percent more capital on hand starting January 2016 to protect them from financial disruption. The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) said the six banks are so big and complex that their failure would damage the Canadian economy. The banks are: Bank of Montreal , Bank of Nova Scotia , Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce , National Bank of Canada , Royal Bank of Canada and Toronto-Dominion Bank .

Cyprus readies capital controls to avert bank run

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cyprus is expected to complete capital control measures on Wednesday to prevent a run on the banks by depositors anxious about their savings after the country agreed a painful rescue package with international lenders. Cypriots have taken to the streets of Nicosia in their thousands to protest at a bailout deal that they fear will push their country into an economic slump and cost many their jobs. European leaders said the deal averted a chaotic national bankruptcy that might have forced Cyprus out of the euro.

UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson goes 2-1 at jiu-jitsu tournament

UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson will fight Gilbert Melendez on April 20, but he took on other competitors over the weekend. Henderson competed in the 2013 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships. He won his first two matches, but lost 8-0 to Jaime Soares Canuto.

Henderson, a brown belt in jiu-jitsu, decided to do the tournament for fun. It wasn't a break from training for the bout with Melendez. Henderson's coach said he did six rounds of MMA sparring on Saturday before competing on Sunday. Instead, it was just a little bit of competition.

He tweeted about the tournament:

What are your thoughts on Henderson competing just weeks before his fight? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

T-Mobile to start offering iPhone 5 on April 12

NEW YORK (AP) ? T-Mobile USA on Tuesday said it will start offering the iPhone 5 on April 12, filling what its CEO said was "a huge void" in its phone lineup.

T-Mobile, the fourth-largest of the national U.S. phone companies, has been losing customers to the bigger companies, which all sell the iPhone.

"This is a big deal for us," T-Mobile CEO John Legere said at an event in New York.

The company is charging $100 up front for the iPhone 5, then another $20 per month for two years. That's on top of service fees for voice, text and data that start at $50 per month. The total monthly cost starts at $70 per month, a substantial discount to prices offered by bigger companies.

T-Mobile's network has, until recently, not been able to offer high-speed data service to iPhones. It's now able to deliver high-speed data to iPhones in some cities, and it has lured over 2.1 million off-contract AT&T iPhones, executives said Tuesday.

The company also announced that it is firing up an even faster data network, based on so-called "LTE" technology, in Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, Calif., and Washington. Unofficially, the network is also active here and there in New York, as demonstrated at the event. By the end of the year, T-Mobile says it will be available where two-thirds of the nation's population lives. The iPhone 5 can access the LTE network for faster data downloads.

T-Mobile is the last of the four major carriers to launch an LTE network, but already has a relatively fast "4G" network. It's been hamstrung by a lack of space on the airwaves, but gained some room last year from AT&T as part the compensation for a failed buyout attempt.

T-Mobile also said it will start selling the Samsung Galaxy S 4 on or around May 1. That's the successor to the Galaxy S III, which has been the chief competitor to the iPhone.

The announcement comes just days after T-Mobile ditched its conventional contract-based plans in favor of selling phones on an installment basis. It's separating the cost of the phone from the service, and when a phone is paid off, usually after two years, the monthly fee for the phone disappears from the billing statement.

On traditional contract-based plans still used by the other carriers, the buyer is deemed to have "paid off" the phone after a certain period, at which point the customer becomes eligible for a new, subsidized phone. The monthly payments, however, don't decline if the customer keeps the old phone. There's no service contract, so customers are free to jump from T-Mobile to another carrier at any point, but they'll still be paying off their T-Mobile phone in monthly installments.

T-Mobile is positioning the change as a radical departure from industry practices, and is basing a new advertising campaign on being the "Uncarrier."

"We're cancelling our membership in the carrier club," Legere said.

As before, T-Mobile's prices generally undercut those of the bigger phone companies. The chief weakness is that its data network coverage is poorer in rural areas.

"T-Mobile realizes that they have to change the rules of the game, because under the current rules, they're losing, and they're going to continue to lose," said telecommunications analyst Roger Entner at Recon Analytics. He's skeptical that the plans, alone, can change its fortunes.

"Even if they're $5 cheaper, will that be enough? They're already charging a significant discount to Verizon and AT&T, and they're losing customers," Entner said.

T-Mobile is a unit of Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG, which has agreed to merge it with No. 5 carrier MetroPCS Communications Inc. That deal faces opposition from shareholders of MetroPCS, which provides only prepaid service. By coincidence, the shareholders are voting on the merger on April 12, the same day T-Mobile starts selling the iPhone.

Docomo Inks Deal With China Mobile To Take Its 'D Game' Gaming ...

NTT Docomo, the largest carrier in Japan, is taking one more step into China today. The company announced that it will offer a localized version of its new ?d game? gaming service on China Mobile. This will be the first time that d game is being exported to any market outside of Japan. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The service will go live on March 26, initially with 20 titles.

As Japan is one of the most mobile-saturated and mature markets for content anywhere in the world, China has huge potential as an emerging, neighboring market for NTT Docomo. Specifically, China Mobile is the world?s biggest operator with 700 million subscribers, so it makes sense that Docomo is increasingly forging partnerships and porting its products across the border.

The move follows other developments for Docomo in China, and specifically with China Mobile. At the end of February, the two carriers, along with KT, agreed on an international NFC roaming service ? meaning that NFC readers in devices sold by each company would work in the other markets, and on specific NFC-based services developed locally. At the same time they also agreed on a WiFi roaming deal.

What?s not clear is whether this latest development to export d game is connected in any way with Docomo?s JV with Baidu, created last year when Docomo invested $22.5 million in the operation to create mobile content for the Chinese market. Instead, this deal is being carried out by D2C China, a subsidiary of D2C, a joint venture between Docomo and advertising giant Dentsu.

The first rush of content will feature some 20 titles, including games but also non-game content including wallpapers and covering well-known publishers such as Capcom, Konami, Tecmo Koei, Square Enix and MTI. More content is coming down the line, Docomo notes. ?Going forward, DOCOMO intends to grow its global content business with a variety of content originally distributed through the company?s dmarket? portal in Japan, providing overseas customers with opportunities to enjoy high-quality mobile content from Japan,? Docomo writes in its statement.

NTT Docomo is Japan???s leading mobile communications company. The number of customers exceeds 50 million in Japan. docomo mainly provides phone, web (i-mode for mobile phones), and mail (i-mode mails, Short Mails, and SMS) services. Docomo???s parent company is NTT, Japan???s biggest telecommunications companies. In a strategic decision to put more emphasis on mobile phone operations, docomo was spun off in 1991 as a wholly self-owned subsidiary. The Japanese government is the top shareholder.

(AP) ? Bill Self didn't have much to say to his team at halftime, not with Kansas playing as poorly as it had all season and North Carolina just 20 minutes away from an NCAA tournament win.

So he walked into the locker room and told his players to talk among themselves.

Senior guard Elijah Johnson remembers asking, "What are we going to do, y'all?" Kevin Young, another senior, quickly replied, "We're going to play!" And yet another senior, Jeff Withey, spoke up and reminded his teammates that they had "20 minutes or another weekend."

They chose to play another weekend.

The No. 1 seed in the South Region roared back onto the familiar floor of the Sprint Center and right past the eighth-seeded Tar Heels, overcoming a nine-point deficit in a 70-58 victory that sent Kansas to the round of 16 for the third straight year.

The Jayhawks will play fourth-seeded Michigan on Friday in Arlington, Texas.

"I stepped up and said, 'This could be our last 20 minutes. Are we going to go out there and leave it on the floor, or let them roll over us like they did in the first half," recalled Travis Releford, who led the Jayhawks (31-5) with 22 points and eight rebounds.

"Everybody took that in," Releford said, "and we just came out and played."

Made plays when they mattered most, just like plucky La Salle.

The No. 13 seed in the West Region upended fourth-seeded Kansas State on Friday night and then got a scooping layup just before the buzzer to beat No. 12 seed Ole Miss 76-74 on Sunday.

The Explorers (24-9) will play ninth-seeded Wichita State on Thursday in Los Angeles.

"What a great win. What a great weekend over here," said La Salle coach John Giannini, whose team actually started its run by beating Boise State in a First Four game Wednesday night.

"We couldn't be more proud," Giannini said. "I know La Salle is proud of these guys. We talk all week about the great La Salle tradition, and when you come in, you want to bring that back, and these guys are doing it right before our eyes."

La Salle certainly has some tradition, having won a national title back in the '50s.

The Jayhawks have a bit of history, too.

The five-time national champions beat the Tar Heels, another program steeped in tradition, in the NCAA tournament for the third time in the past six years. That includes last season, when they beat their former coach Roy Williams and his Tar Heels to reach the Final Four in New Orleans.

"I don't think it has much to do with Coach Williams or me. I think it has something to do that the three nights we played, we played well," said Self, who was asked to make sense of the success he's had against the man he replaced 10 years ago.

"That kind of stuff is blown up way more than it should be," Self said. "Coaches know players win games and certainly in the games we've played, we've had our players step up and play great."

Withey had 16 points and 16 rebounds on Sunday night, helping Kansas outscore North Carolina (25-11) by a staggering 49-28 in the second half. That not only wiped out the Jayhawks' deficit, it allowed both coaches the opportunity to sub in bench players in the closing seconds.

P.J. Hairston scored 15 points and James Michael McAdoo had 11 for the Tar Heels.

"We lost to another basketball team," Williams said afterward. "The fact that I coached here for 15 years is extremely important to me, but it doesn't add anything to today.

"I hurt for my kids in the locker room," he added quietly. "The NCAA tournament, the swiftness with which your season ends is dramatic, and it hurts everywhere."

It's sure to hurt down in Oxford, Miss.

Ole Miss (27-9) was leading La Salle 74-72 with 1:07 left Sunday night when Tyreek Duren made two foul shots to tie the game. At the other end, flamboyant Rebels star Marshall Henderson failed to hit an off-balance bank shot that would have given his team the lead.

The Explorers allowed the final seconds of regulation to melt away, and Tyrone Garland slashed across the lane for a scooping layup with 2 seconds left that gave them an exhilarating victory.

"Time was running out, and I felt like I could get the drive," said Garland, who couldn't make a jumper most of the night. "When I cut, I just saw an opening and took the ball up."

The basket set off a wild celebration on the Sprint Center floor, and allowed La Salle to join another upstart ? Florida Gulf Coast, from the South Region ? in the round of 16.

"I don't know how to feel, because I've never been here. I could say it's the greatest feeling, but honestly, I don't know," said the Explorers' Ramon Galloway. "It's wonderful. It's just a wonderful story to uplift the La Salle community."

Hawaii Wedding Photographers

Obviously not all couples are the same which works well for the Hawaii wedding packages market. Many services allow for customization based on the client's needs since all are different and people desire ceremonies that cater to their own ideals. The extravagance of a ceremony is really based on not only the customer's wants, but also their budget. For those interested in the idea yet not certain as to what might be affordable, the internet can be a useful tool. There are a plethora of Hawaii wedding packages websites which offer advice and prices on everything from flowers to location. Some packages even include suggestions on accommodations for the wedding party, families and guests, and in many cases the accommodations are included in the overall cost of the package.

Research is key for couples who want to find the package that is right for them. Hawaiian ceremonial services know that there are clients who want everything which is why there are packages that provide onsite coordinators, flowers, minister, solo musicians, a professional Hawaiian wedding photographer, limo, cake, chairs and an arbor for the beach, and more. For those willing to spend a little extra, the can receive a reception, complete photography session while touring an island, massage, hair and makeup for bride, a wedding certificate, the list goes on offering weddings as diverse as the couples.

The average price for all inclusive services can run upwards of four thousand dollars. There are companies that take into consideration that some clients will desire more finery, while others want more of the basics. For that reason many services usually include at least two different packages for clients to choose from. For example, one option allows for the clients to stay a resort style condominium, and another offer a resort grade hotel. Options such as these help the clients to feel more relaxed as the duration of the stay is similar to that of a Hawaiian vacation. Prices that include accommodations such as these often incorporate an entire package and can range anywhere from one hundred twenty a night to over four thousand.

The most popular locations for the exchanging of vows in the Hawaiian Islands are Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, with Maui being the most sought after. The Hawaiian Islands are so appealing because of the tropical setting and gorgeous landscapes. The Island's histories are steeped in myths and legends which provide an essence of mystery and romance. The Island's mysticism attracts many people, especially those who are seeking a beautiful location for starting their lives together. Included among the diverse Hawaii wedding packages some can be found that advertises by way of encouraging customers to incorporate the spirit of Hawaii into the ceremony, one that honors the island's heritage, traditions, and myths. Ceremonies such as these have taken into consideration that not everyone desires all the bells and whistles and would rather incorporate more if the Island's natural beauty. For couples who want an exotic setting yet not a lot of flare, packages can be found which provide low-key and informal ceremonies that include wedding services or simply just vow renewal. Companies such as these provide the necessities, such as the minister and a small set up on a beach. For a little extra cost clients can choose to have photos taken and leis for the bride and groom.

Most packages include Hawaii wedding photographers for recording the entirety of the service, or simply for capturing those special moments. A fact couples should keep in mind when planning a tropical ceremony is that top wedding photographers can be booked up to a year in advance, so planning ahead is important. Wedding photography began as an art form in the 1820's. People did not commonly pose for pictures during the ceremony or for documenting the service at all until the late nineteenth century. This was mainly due to the photographer's large and rather cumbrous equipment. Traditionally, recording the entirety of the event did not come into vogue until the advent of more streamlined camera equipment in the 1970's. This paved the way for the wedding photographers in places such as Hawaii by allowing for more ease of transporting equipment on beaches.

Two different types of photography are popular for ceremonies which are traditional and photo journalistic. Traditional are more classic in nature and focus on capturing the overall scenes of the ceremony, while photo journalistic tend to focus more on capturing emotions and telling a story. Hawaii wedding photographers are very popular among people that flock to the islands. When choosing a photographer, potential clients can choose to look through portfolios to find a look that is right for them. Many can be found through the internet and allow clients to peruse portfolios with ease and get a taste for all the beautiful landscapes and settings of the islands for truly, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork" (Psalm 19:1). While gaining a sense of the memories of the ceremony, Hawaii wedding photographers can help to preserve those special moments in breathtaking ways.

New pope opens Holy Week at Vatican on Palm Sunday

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis celebrated his first Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square, encouraging people to be humble and young at heart and promising to go to a youth jamboree in Brazil in July, while the faithful enthusiastically waved olive branches and braided palm fronds.

The square overflowed with a crowd estimated by the Vatican at 250,000 people. Pilgrims, tourists and Romans jostled each other in an eager effort glimpse Francis as they joined the new pope at the start of solemn Holy Week ceremonies, which lead up to Easter, Christianity's most important day.

Keeping with his spontaneous style, the first pope from Latin America broke away several times from the text of his prepared homily to encourage the faithful to lead simple lives and resist the temptation to be sad when life's obstacles inevitably come their way.

"Don't let yourselves be robbed of hope! Don't let yourselves be robbed of hope!" Francis told the crowd, in an apparent reference to the economic difficulties people are grappling with as they try to find adequate work amid a poor job market in much of the world.

At the end of the two-hour Mass, Francis took off his red vestments, and wearing his plain white cassock and skull cap, climbed into an open-topped popemobile to circle through the excited crowd. He leaned out to shake hands, kissed and patted the heads of infants passed to him by bodyguards, and often gave children the thumbs-up sign.

His security detail seemed to be reluctantly dealing with this get-close-to-the-people pontiff, scrambling around the vehicle to pick up this child or that one. At one point, the chief bodyguard, Domenico Giani, was sent back to the mother of a child he had greeted to convey a message from the pontiff, and the ever-tense Giani broke into a smile after his mission was accomplished.

Francis even climbed down from the vehicle, kissed a woman in the crowd and chatted briefly with her, and another man in the crowd leaned over a barrier to squeeze the pontiff on a shoulder ? an unheard of familiarity in the previous pontificate of the reserved Benedict XVI.

In keeping with his stress on giving examples of humility, Francis kissed the hand of an elderly woman who had outstretched an arm to him.

"There is no doubt that there will be a new spring for the church, a renewal" with this pope, said Sister Emma, an Argentine nun in the crowd.

Palm Sunday recalls Jesus' entry into Jerusalem but its Gospel also recounts how he was betrayed by one of his apostles and ultimately sentenced to death on a cross.

Francis presided over the Mass at an altar sheltered by a white canopy on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica.

Recalling the triumphant welcome into Jerusalem, Francis said Jesus "awakened so many hopes in the heart, above all among humble, simple, poor, forgotten people, those who don't matter in the eyes of the world."

Cardinals, many of them among the electors who chose him to be the Roman Catholic church's first Latin American pope, sat on chairs during the ceremony held under hazy skies on a breezy day. He quoted from Benedict when he told the cardinals that while they are "princes" of the church, their leader is the crucified Christ, a further admonition against attachment to temporal power.

The pope ticked off a litany of evils afflicting the world, including wars, "economic conflicts that hit the weakest" as well as corruption. In the final stretch of Benedict's papacy, the Vatican was embarrassed by a leak of documents from the papal apartment, indicating corruption, ambition and rivalries among upper ranks of the Holy See's management.

Francis told an off-the-cuff story from his childhood in Argentina. "My grandmother used to tell us children, 'burial shrouds don't have' pockets," the pope said, in a variation of "you can't take it with you."

Since his election on March 13, Francis has put the downtrodden and poor at the center of his mission as pope, keeping with the priorities of his Jesuit tradition.

In his homily, Francis said Christian joy "isn't born from possessing a lot of things but from having met" Jesus. That same joy should keep people young, he said.

"Even at 70, 80, the heart doesn't age" if one is inspired by Christian joy, said the 76-year-old pontiff.

The pontiff said he was joyfully looking forward to welcoming young people to Rio de Janiero for the Catholic Church's World Youth Day. So far, that is the first foreign trip on the calendar of Francis' new papacy. "I'm coming in July," Francis said in remarks after Mass from the esplanade of the basilica.

During Mass, at the point when the Gospel recounts the moment of Jesus' death, many faithful knelt on hard cobblestones paving the square, and Francis knelt on a wooden kneeler.

A few young olive trees were inserted in dirt placed around the central obelisk in the square.

Holy Week will see at least one break from tradition with this new papacy. Instead of washing priests' feet in a basilica in a symbolic gesture of humility on Holy Thursday, Francis will wash the feet of young inmates at a juvenile detention center in Rome. Other appointments in public will include the Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum on Good Friday night. Next Sunday, Francis will celebrate Easter Mass in the square.

Characters Gives You Quick Access to Special Characters and Emojis in Your Mac's Menubar

Characters Gives You Quick Access to Special Characters and Emojis in Your Mac's Menubar A few weeks ago, we introduced you to CatchChar, a Windows utility that made it easy to find and use special Unicode characters. Now, Characters brings similarly handy functionality to your Mac's menubar.

You can invoke Characters by clicking on its menubar icon or with a customizable keyboard shortcut, and then find anything you want using a natural language search bar. The app supports all the standard Unicode special characters you'd expect, plus Emoji as a fun bonus. Once you find what you're looking for, just click the character or navigate to it with arrow keys and hit enter to copy it to your clipboard. The app also features an incredibly useful code mode that can copy the character's HTML Entity or Python source to use on your website or script.

If you don't need special characters very often, you can find them fairly easily in the Edit menu of most Mac apps. But if you find yourself needing them a lot, or just want quick access to silly Emojis, Characters is well worth its $2.99 price tag.

Best Practices for Disposing of Old Computers

Best Practices for Disposing of Old Computers

Newer and faster laptops, phones and tablets are being released every day it seems, but what are we supposed to do with the outdated devices we no longer want to use? The security of proprietary and personal information and environmental issues are the primary concerns when disposing of unwanted computers. Here are some guidelines we recommend when phasing out computers from your business or home.

Deleting a File Does Not Actually Erase Information

When you delete a file from the hard drive, the operating system only deletes the information that describes where the file is located. Simply deleting files, emptying the recycle bin or reformatting the hard drive is not enough to cover your digital tracks. In addition to documents, photos, videos, and private information that is accessible on your computer; there is also your Internet browser?s cache, cookies and history; email contacts and messages; and the recycle or trash folder.
Don?t take a chance with the security of your business and personal information. A Computer Troubleshooters technician can complete any of the following strategies when trying to secure your personal information on an old device.

The most cost-effective and commonly used strategy is the use of a software utility that overwrites the hard drive with random characters and binary data anywhere from three to more than 30 times. These utilities are typically referred to as data destruction software, hard drive eraser software or disk wipe software.

Another effective but more costly solution is degaussing. This is the erasure of information through the use of a powerful magnet. Degaussing disrupts the magnetic domains on the drive, which erases your data while also rendering the drive permanently unusable.
The physical destruction of a hard drive is the only way to absolutely and forever ensure that the data is no longer available. There are contractors who will perform this task on site, using the appropriate tools and safety precautions. We do not recommend this type of hard drive destruction by consumers.

Donate or Recycle Your Old Computer

Extending the computer?s lifespan through re-use provides the highest environmental benefit. There are many ways that bridge the digital divide by providing schools, non-profit organizations, family members, and students with needed technology.

When you donate or recycle an unwanted computer, there are a lot of details you will need to be concerned with such as; maintaining the security of information that was stored on the computer, or locating local technology recyclers.

Don?t feel overwhelmed by all of these details. Let your local Computer Troubleshooters take on the burden. One of our professional technicians will be happy to explore the various options available to you when deciding how best to dispose of an unwanted computer or laptop.

? If your computer is less than five years old chances are it can be put to good use. Most organizations have specific technology needs, so inquire in advance regarding donation guidelines.

? Most charitable contributions are tax deductible and computers are no exception. Business donors can generally deduct the un-depreciated value of the computer and individuals can deduct the current market value of a computer. Remember to retain your receipt for tax records.

? Consider donating your unwanted computer to a refurbisher who is equipped to repair and upgrade older computers. Certified refurbishers ensure that equipment works well and will pass on ready-to-use equipment at little or no cost to individuals and organizations. It is recommended that you remove your hard drive from any system that you donate to a refurbisher to ensure the security of your data.

? Even if a computer cannot be reused or refurbished there are reputable technology recyclers that can ensure valuable raw materials are recovered from old computers and that any waste is disposed of in an environmentally-safe and responsible manner.

? Let your local Computer Troubleshooters do all the work for you. Our technicians are trained experts in making sure your personal information is secure and responsibly disposing of unwanted devices.

One Notion Under Jobs: Newly Unearthed Videos Show 1984 Steve Wozniak Speaking On Pranks, Probation, And Apple's Early Days

WozDamn it, Internet. I had things I needed to do this afternoon. So much for that. A VHS recording of a 1984 Apple enthusiast meetup was recently rediscovered, and it had at least one very special gem tucked inside: footage of a 34-year old Steve Wozniak giving a speech on just about everything you'd want to see 34-year old Steve Wozniak talking about. Pranks. The decision to quit everything and start Apple. Changing the friggin' world.

Road traffic pollution as serious as passive smoke in the development of childhood asthma

Mar. 21, 2013 ? New research conducted in 10 European cities has estimated that 14% of chronic childhood asthma is due to exposure to traffic pollution near busy roads.

The results are comparable to the burden associated with passive smoking: the World Health Organization estimates that between 4% and 18% of asthma cases in children are linked to passive smoking.

The findings, published online today (22 March 2013) ahead of print in the European Respiratory Journal, come as the European Commission has declared 2013 the 'Year of Air', which highlights the importance of clean air for all and focuses on actions to improve air quality across the EU.

Until now, traffic pollution was assumed to only trigger asthma symptoms and burden estimations did not account for chronic asthma caused by the specific range of toxicants that are found near heavily used roads along which many Europeans live.

The researchers used a method known as population-attributable fractions to assess the impact of near-road traffic pollution. This calculates the proportional reduction in disease or death that would occur if exposure to a risk factor were reduced to a lower level.

The new research used data from existing epidemiological studies which found that children exposed to higher levels of near-road traffic-related pollution also had higher rates of asthma, even when taking into account a range of other relevant factors such as passive smoking or socioeconomic factors.

The researchers aimed to take these findings further and estimate how many asthma cases could be avoided if exposure was removed.

The results found that 14% of asthma cases across the 10 cities could be attributed to near-road traffic pollution. The findings also take into account differences in the health of the overall population in different cities.

Lead author, Dr Laura Perez at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, said: "Air pollution has previously been seen to trigger symptoms but this is the first time we have estimated the percentage of cases that might not have occurred if Europeans had not been exposed to road traffic pollution. In light of all the existing epidemiological studies showing that road-traffic contributes to the onset of the disease in children, we must consider these results to improve policy making and urban planning."

Israeli spy's case gets attention during Obama visit

During the president's address in Jerusalem Thursday he was interrupted by a heckler shouting about Jonathan Pollard, presumably calling for his release.

Pollard, 58, is serving a life term in a North Carolina prison after pleading guilty in 1987 to spying for Israel from June 1984 until he was arrested in November 1985.

Pollard provided Israel with thousands of pages of U.S. intelligence, gathered as a civilian intelligence officer for the U.S. Navy, on military and technical intelligence.

For decades, Israelis have asked U.S. presidents to pardon Pollard. Those calls have increased recently as President Barack Obama embarked on his first trip to Israel as president. The main argument of Pollard's supporters is that his actions benefited a close ally of the United States, but did not harm the security of the nation. They also point out that he has already served 28 years in prison. He also issued a public apology in 1997 and his attorney says his health is failing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even visited Pollard in prison in North Carolina in 2002, when he was not in office. Netanyahu said he would raise the issue with the president on this trip.

However, Obama said in an Israeli television interview last week before he embarked on his trip that a pardon in the near future is unlikely saying Pollard "is an individual who committed a very serious crime here in the United States."

"He's been serving his time," Obama told Israel's Channel 2. "I have no plans for releasing Jonathan Pollard immediately but what I am going to be doing is to make sure that he, like every other American who's been sentenced, is accorded the same kinds of review and the same examination of the equities that any other individual would provide."

He did acknowledge the movement to pardon Pollard is in Israel, where now it has widespread support.

"I recognize the emotions involved in this. One of the strengths of the Israeli people is you think about your people wherever they are and I recognize that and I'm sympathetic," Obama said in the interview. "I think people have to understand that as the president my first obligation is to observe the law here in the United States and to make sure that it's applied consistently and there are a lot of individuals in prisons in the United States who have committed crimes who would love to be released early as well and I've got to make sure that every individual is treated fairly and equally."

There is also support in the United States for his release, including people like Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel and former CIA Director R. James Woolsey, including many U.S. Senators and members of congress. In 2010, 39 members of congress signed a letter calling for Pollard's release.

Other national security officials, as well as Vice President Joe Biden, have said they oppose clemency in Pollard's case.
