By 2030, Climate Change Could Kill 100 Million People and Decimate Economic Growth

?

Money talks. So maybe this bit of news will sway a few climate-change deniers.

A report commissioned by 20 governments and conducted by the humanitarian organization DARA found that, ?More than 100 million people will die and global economic growth will be cut by 3.2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030 if the world fails to tackle climate change,? reports Reuters.

?More than 90 percent of those deaths will occur in developing countries, said the report that calculated the human and economic impact of climate change on 184 countries in 2010 and 2030.? And the report added, ?the effects of climate change had lowered global output by 1.6 percent of world GDP, or by about $1.2 trillion a year, and losses could double to 3.2 percent of global GDP by 2030 if global temperatures are allowed to rise, surpassing 10 percent before 2100.?

MORE: The Most Anti-Environmental Congress in U.S. History Seeks Reelection

?

DARA has touched on this subject before, noting last month that, ?For every one-degree centigrade increase in temperature, a poor country can expect economic growth to drop by about 1.3 percentage points . . . As emerging nations are playing catch-up in terms of technology, being knocked off course is not good news.?

Commenting on the impact of climate change in the developing world, The Economist said earlier this month that, ?Most people in the West know that the poor world contributes to climate change, though the scale of its contribution still comes as a surprise. Poor and middle-income countries already account for just over half of total carbon emissions . . . Brazil produces more CO2 per head than Germany. The lifetime emissions from these countries' planned power stations would match the world's entire industrial pollution since 1850.?

?Less often realized, though, is that global warming does far more damage to poor countries than they do to the climate. In a report in 2006 [Lord]?Nicholas Stern calculated that a 2?C rise in global temperature cost about 1% of world GDP.?

?

But Reuters noted that, ?Even the biggest and most rapidly developing economies will not escape unscathed. The United States and China could see a 2.1 percent reduction in their respective GDPs by 2030, while India could experience a more than 5 percent loss.?

And last year, BBC News reported that the ?Negative effects of climate change could cost Canada the equivalent of 1% of its GDP by 2050 and 2.5% by 2075 . . . Damage could reach C$41bn ($20bn; ?27bn), estimates say, depending on global emissions, the economy and population growth.?

In other words, we really are all in this together.

Do you think the economic implications of global warming highlighted here might change the minds of some climate-change deniers?

How To Negotiate Salary Without Offending - Business Insider

Negotiating a starting?salary?can be a slippery slope. Make a mistake and you can leave more than money on the table. No employer wants to be bullied into paying extra, but on the same token, potential employees don?t want to undercut themselves when it comes to accepting a?salary offer.

While it?s easy to offend somebody during the negotiation process, there are ways to do it effectively and successfully, without upsetting either side.

Consider these tips:

1. Is There Room for Negotiation?

According to career experts, the first step is to see if there is really any reason to negotiate at all.

?Before you walk in the door you have to find out what is the going rate for your position and experience,? says Patricia Sweeney, human resource manager at Old Colony Hospice and Palliative Care. ?If you are going into a small non-profit hoping to make $80,000 a year, chances are that?s not going to happen. You need to know the industry you are going into.?

Joel Garfinkle, author of?Get Paid What You?re Worth,?says you shouldn?t go in expecting to get double what you are offered. ?Demanding more money and waiving another offer in their face typically doesn?t work,? he says.

Not only?research the going rate for your position?and experience, but also do your homework on the company you are interviewing for. Are they profitable, are they growing, do they have high turnover or have a reputation for under paying employees, are all things you want to know ahead of time.

2. Figure Out What You Want Ahead Of Time.

Setting a range for what you are willing to take and what will make you walk away is also important to negotiating successfully. According to?Jack Chapman, a career coach and author of?Negotiating Your Salary, How to Make $1000 a Minute,?you should have an ideal number, a satisfactory number and a no-go number set in your mind. The ideal number should be how much you would want to make in the perfect situation. It should pass the laugh test but it shouldn?t be too low either. ?Ask yourself what would be ideal more than straight cash,? says Chapman. ?Maybe it?s some equity in the company, a bonus or no travel when the there?s usually 25% travel.?

The satisfactory number is the one that?s based more on research and what you can bring to the company. Pursue help wanted ads and Internet sites to find out what people in your field are getting paid. Garfinkle says many companies list a salary range in job postings to make candidates aware of what to expect.

The no-go number is the number that you will turn down and the amount that you are willing to walk away over. If you have your numbers in your head before the interview, not only will you negotiate from a position of strength, but you also won?t be tempted to take a lowball offer, says Chapman.

3. Keep Your Arrogance in Check.

Once you are in talks with the company, a way to see how their leaning toward negotiations is to ask them why they are hiring you, says?Jim Camp?founder of the Camp Negotiation Institute. ?You want to see what they see in you,? he says. If the employer says you?re not the most qualified, but we think you will learn on the job, then it?s probably not smart to try to negotiate the highest salary for that position. But if they say you are the most qualified for the job, then you know you?re worth more to the company than the other candidates.

Camp says to not only focus on the salary when it comes to negotiating. Take into account the value of stock options, the retirement program, medical benefits and vacation time. ?When we negotiate we want to negotiate all the possible ingredients of the package. We don?t want to miss one,? he says.

Even if you are a world renowned heart surgeon or a crack software programmer, you have to maintain a humble attitude during the negotiations. If you are too cocky, no matter how great you think you are, it could backfire. Same goes for only caring about money. That sends the message that you are only as loyal as the highest bidder.? ?You may be the best candidate for the job, but rarely will you be the only candidate for a job in today?s market,? says Garfinkle. ?Arrogance can often lead to the employer selecting the next best candidate.?

Aspirin and Cancer: Trials and Observational Studies

Aspirin recently celebrated its commercial centenary, but the exciting news has been a series of articles by Rothwell et al. (1?6) that report on the follow-up of cardiovascular trials begun in the late 1970s and afterward. Those data suggest striking efficacy of aspirin in reducing cancer mortality. One of the recent reports (2) analyzed short-term, in-trial incidence and mortality data from 51 trials. It showed that aspirin conferred a 31% reduction in cancer mortality 5?10 years after subjects were randomized to study treatment, though there was essentially no reduction during the first 5 years.

Motivated by these striking findings, in this issue of the Journal, Jacobs et al. (7) report on the association of aspirin use with cancer mortality in the large American Cancer Society (ACS) cohort. Taking advantage of the study?s repeated assessment of aspirin use, they attempted to replicate the trial findings by evaluating the association of 5 or more years of reported daily aspirin use with subsequent cancer mortality. Unfortunately, they found only 8% or 16% lower cancer mortality, depending on the analytic approach used. In apparent contrast to the trials, associations were similar among those using daily aspirin for less than 5 years and for those using for 5 or more years.

An observational study such as the ACS cohort describes the association of aspirin use with cancer mortality in real life. Did the trials lead us to an overoptimistic assessment, or is the report by Jacobs et al. off the mark? The answer is important, as it clearly will affect an important clinical decision: whether to recommend aspirin for primary prevention of cancer.

An earlier analysis from the ACS cohort assessed cancer incidence in relation to aspirin use (8). As in the report from Jacobs et al., it showed more modest associations than the corresponding ?

No. 15 K-State upends No. 6 Sooners 24-19

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? John Hubert ran for 130 yards and a touchdown, Jarell Childs scooped up a fumble and returned it for a score and No. 15 Kansas State beat No. 6 Oklahoma 24-19 on Saturday night to avenge a wrenching loss from last season.

Collin Klein picked up 228 yards of total offense and ran for the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter in a solid performance that outshined and error-filled night by Sooners quarterback Landry Jones.

Jones threw for 298 yards and a late touchdown to get Oklahoma (2-1, 0-1 Big 12) within five but also fumbled and threw an interception that put Kansas State (4-0, 1-0) in position to go ahead.

The Wildcats waited for Oklahoma's players to leave the field and then celebrated with their fans after earning redemption for a 58-17 blowout loss last season that ended their undefeated run.

Jones, who threw for a school-record 505 yards in last year's game on the Wildcats' home field, had returned to Oklahoma instead of entering the NFL draft in part for one last shot at a national championship.

That could be in jeopardy already, after another loss on a home field where the Sooners seemed invincible not so long ago.

Midway through last season, the Sooners had gone 20 straight games without even trailing at home, but now five of the last seven opponents have led ? with two coming out victorious. Unranked Texas Tech snapped Oklahoma's 39-game winning streak on Owen Field last October.

K-State coach Bill Snyder, the mentor to Sooners counterpart Bob Stoops, scored another marquee win against his former pupil. His only other win head-to-head had come in the 2003 Big 12 championship game, with the Wildcats losing in the other eight meetings.

A handful of critical mistakes by the Sooners' quarterbacks did them in.

Jones' first big gaffe came as he rolled to his right near his own goal line and was hit by Justin Tuggle, with the ball squirting free. Childs picked it up and scored to give K-State an early 7-3 lead and a big shot of momentum.

Oklahoma was within a yard of pulling even when Blake Bell, Jones' backup who runs a power set called the "Belldozer," fumbled away a snap to snuff out a promising drive.

Jones averted disaster with another bad decision in the third quarter, when he flipped the ball toward Roy Finch on a shuffle pass even though Finch was already a couple steps past him. Jones scurried toward the loose ball and tried in vain to recover it, but the Sooners got it back after a review showed it was in fact an ill-advised pass instead of a botched handoff.

Given a second chance, Jones completed his next six passes on the drive and put Oklahoma in position for Bell's 3-yard touchdown run to make it 13-10 with 5 minutes left in the third quarter.

Another Jones mistake gave the Wildcats a chance to reclaim the lead, though.

After faking a handoff, Jones overshot Kenny Stills and K-State's Ty Zimmerman zoomed in to intercept the errant throw and give the Wildcats the ball at the Oklahoma 38. Klein cashed it in seven plays later, going 5 yards on a quarterback keeper to put Kansas State up to stay at 17-13.

Jones, who had claimed his main offseason improvement was his footwork under pressure, badly underthrew Brennan Clay with the pass rush closing in to close Oklahoma's next drive and Hubert provided some breathing room with a 9-yard TD run through traffic up the middle.

The Sooners' defense couldn't get a stop after Sterling Shepard caught a 10-yard TD pass from Jones with 4:09 left, allowing Kansas State to run out the clock.

Gay Liberal Senator opposes same-sex marriage | McBlog

Fascinating reading ? Same-sex Marriage debate last week in Australian Senate

Senator SMITH (Western Australia) (11:27):? I rise to add my views to the debate on the Marriage Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2012 and its desire to extend the definition of ?marriage? to include couples in same-sex relationships. My views are my own and have been formed after years of discussion, observation and careful consideration. I accept that to some the idea of an openly gay man rejecting a proposition to extend the definition of ?marriage? to same-sex relationships seems unusual or counterintuitive. In response, I say that it speaks to the often overlooked fact that opinion on the issue of extending the definition of ?marriage? is heavily divided even among gay and lesbian Australians. I do not doubt that there are many gay and lesbian Australians and their families and friends that support the legislation, but there are also others who do not?.

The debate on same-sex marriage has been a complex and controversial one. .. It has been controversial also because many have confused the religious institution of marriage with marriage as a civil institution. It is marriage as a civil institution that should demand the primary concentration and deliberations of parliamentarians. I believe any future deliberation by the parliament on matters regarding the legal treatment of same-sex couples should make as its focus the task of creating a starker distinction between marriage as a civil institution and its role for some as a religious institution.

My primary opposition to this proposal is born from my strong regard and faith in the cautionary, conservative and traditional approach to these matters. As I have said previously, I distrust sentiments and actions that seek to dismiss, modify or reject as relics our institutions and customs?institutions and customs that have evolved to serve our community well. I believe that cautious and considered change is critical if we are to bring about stability and continuity for our community.

I reject the suggestion of marriage equality. Marriage equality has been a slogan; it has been a campaign. The claim to equality ignores the widely accepted fact that marriage is an institution that has a long and well-accepted definition?a definition that is heavily laden with cultural meaning and values crafted by custom and by law over the years. It is an institution that has a common and well-understood meaning in Australia. I dispute the commentary in this place and others suggesting that the majority of Australians are ready to extend the meaning of marriage to same-sex relationships. I also dispute the view that the inability to utilise the Marriage Act restricts in any fundamental manner the quality of life experiences of gay and lesbian Australians.

The case for equality for gay and lesbian Australians was a battle too-long fought. It must be acknowledged that on the substantive matters of equality in Australia, gay and lesbian Australians can live at law without discrimination?.

Let me share with you the view of at least one other gay Australian who has challenged the current marriage equality movement. This comment was recorded in April this year in OUTinPerth, a community newspaper based in Perth, my home town. It said: The other thing that?s irritating I suppose about it is that it has become this orthodoxy within the community. Dissenting voices are not allowed, it?s just assumed that if you?re gay you?re for it, as it?s clearly a human right ? which it?s not. The article goes on to what I regard as the most important, but all too often forgotten, critical element in the debate when it says: The right is to have our relationship recognised equally by the State; the right is not to marriage.

?.By not agreeing to same-sex marriage, I am not choosing to endorse discrimination against my fellow gay and lesbians Australians or to be disrespectful to their domestic relationships, or to lessen the value of their commitments, companionship, love and unions. Instead, for me, it is an honest acknowledgement, of the special and unique characteristics of the union described as ?marriage?. http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;db=CHAMBER;id=chamber%2Fhansards%2F2e9571fe-03fd-411b-9e11-6c9629474f79%2F0066;query=Id%3A%22chamber%2Fhansards%2F2e9571fe-03fd-411b-9e11-6c9629474f79%2F0000%22

Research will provide clues to the genetic diversity of 30-80 percent of all plants worldwide

PITTSBURGHAlthough polyploids, which are plants with more than two sets of chromosomes, are common, how they contribute to the biodiversity has remained a mysteryuntil now. With the help of a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and Oregon State University will use wild strawberry plants (Fragaria) to identify what role genetic diversity plays in polyploids, which make up 30-80% of all living plants. This will help scientists predict the ecological responses plants may have to environmental change.

"This deeply integrated comparative study of the wild relatives of the cultivated strawberrya species of world-wide economic importancewill provide foundational knowledge and contribute unparalleled resources that may be harnessed in efforts to ensure the sustainability of the strawberry and related crops such as the cherry, peach or apple, in the face of stress from non-living factors," said Tia-Lynn Ashman, principal investigator of the study and professor and associate chair of Pitt's Department of Biological Sciences.

The strawberry, a plant with 20 species (nearly half of which are polyploids), has centers of diversity in China and America and possesses numerous features that make it the perfect plant to examine. For example, Fragaria is susceptible to climate change, due to its early spring flowering and northern latitude or high-elevation distribution. Ashman says the wild strawberry will be the key to helping biologists resolve uncertainties about polyploidization's impact on the biodiversity.

"We will use common garden studies of natural and synthetic polyploids in the greenhouse and at climatically diverse sites to quickly identify the factors that underlie its functional traits and gene expression diversity," said Ashman.

This will allow her team to forge links between gene expression and functional variation, says Ashman, allowing them to determine where in the lineage the majority of genetic/functional diversity resides.

In addition to solving the unknown mysteries of multi-chromosome plants, the project also facilitates training by broad participation and international collaboration, including middle school science curriculum, involvement of high school teachers, next-generation sequencing workshops, cross-cutting training, and communication of research through academic journals.

Ashman's project falls under "Dimensions of Biodiversity" in NSF's investment in Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability program (SEES). The goal of the Dimensions of Biodiversity campaign is to transform, by 2020, how we describe and understand the scope and role of life on Earth. The SEES program addresses challenges in climate and energy research and education using a systems-based approach to understanding, predicting, and reacting to change in the natural, social, and built environments. Initial SEES efforts focused on coordination of a suite of research and education programs at the intersection of climate and environment, including specific attention to incorporating human dimensions.

Why did Chick-fil-A choose to pull funds for gay marriage foes?

After enduring a major public-relations tsunami this summer, Chick-fil-A, the Atlanta-based sandwich shop that?s closed on Sundays, says it will end its decade-long corporate support of culture-warrior groups that oppose gay marriage.

"Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena,? the company said in a statement Wednesday. Its charitable arm, WinShape Foundations, gave $2 million to gay-marriage opponents such as Focus on the Family in 2010 alone, according to ABC News.

The news emerged from Chicago, from the office of city Alderman Joe Moreno, who helped drive the controversy by vowing to block Chick-fil-A?s application for a building permit in Chicago?s hip Northwest Side ward over statements by CEO Dan Cathy this summer. Mr. Cathy told the Baptist Press in July that he was ?guilty as charged? for supporting ?the biblical definition of the family unit.?

RECOMMENDED: Obama vs. Romney 101: 4 ways they differ on gay issues

The comments caused demonstrations and counterdemonstrations, including a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day suggested by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R). The Henson Group, of ?Muppets? fame, broke off relations with the company over the flap. Many gay acdtivists vowed to shun the restaurant, while conservatives alleged that Mr. Moreno and other politicians were engaging in ?thug? politics by punishing a private business for protected speech.

With 1,614 restaurants nationally and as sponsor of the Chick-fil-A college bowl ? not to mention those highway billboards with the cows ? the company is a corporate success story that made a name for itself with tastefully spiced and artfully fried chicken breast served on fluffy buns with a few pickles as the only condiment.

Despite considerable public support for the company's right to exercise its free-speech rights, Chick-fil-A evidently saw several reasons to switch course. (Chick-fil-A headquarters said Wednesday that, beside its written statement, it won?t make any more public announcements on the topic.)

Some marketing experts say the company, with revenues of about $4 billion, could see a slight dip in business because of the controversy, especially if it remained unresolved in the public?s eye.

More immediately, the company?s corporate plans to broaden its reach outside of the South may also be a factor in its policy change. The company's socially conservative management has made news before, but the firm's values seemed in sync with many Southerners' views on church, God, and marriage. But Chick-fil-A's efforts to expand into places like Chicago and cities in California have put those values into the limelight, raising difficulties not only in obtaining construction permits but also vis a vis local and regional consumer attitudes.

?Chick-fil-A is part of the South. It?s part of the Southern culture, and they?ve done an outstanding job of expanding over the years,? Greg Sanders, publisher of Food News Media, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in July. ?But let?s be frank, if they?re new in California, not only are social attitudes possibly different in that part of the country, but there?s also not a bank of good will with that brand being built for up years [as it is] in the South.?

For Chick-fil-A, the change in corporate donations may be a small sacrifice. Though some will argue that the company gave in to political correctness, the memo Chick-fil-A vows to send to employees contains the same message that it made public last month ? that the company takes pride in treating ?every person with honor, dignity and respect ? regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.?

Yet the funding reversal also highlighted the risks companies and nonprofits take when they take public stances on divisive social issues.

After public outcry in January over its short-lived decision to end funding for Planned Parenthood, an abortion provider, the Susan G. Komen Foundation backtracked and shook up its corporate staff. Even so, Komen has seen participation in its annual breast cancer walks drop in some areas. In San Francisco, registration for this month?s walk was down 50 percent from last year.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, some of those offended by Chick-fil-A's charitable giving practices reacted positively to its announced course change.

?This gay chicken will [now] cross the road for some waffle fries regardless of what you think about me,? writes ?Wilbur? in a comment on the Journal-Constitution website.

If You Plan On Buying Real Estate You Should Check Out These Tips!

Buying a home can strike fear into your heart, and that is especially true if you haven?t bought real estate before. Buying a property, however, can dramatically improve the quality of your life, and can be a very lucrative investment. So whether this is your first time buying real estate or not, the information presented here will help you with your purchase.

It is important that you purchase business real estate in a neighborhood that is considered a low-crime area so that customers will feel comfortable coming to your establishment. By opening a business in a bad neighborhood, you are less likely to get a large customer base. Consult your real estate agent to find the best place to open your shop.

If you are interested in a rental property, make inquiries regarding who is responsible for the gardening before you sign the lease. Sometimes, tenants are required to maintain the landscaping at their expense. Or, this might be included in the rent.

See if your real estate agent has a checklist. Several Realtors have checklists that cover the purchase of a home, including budget. You can use the various checklists to make sure you?re ready for every contingent as it comes up.

TIP! Get as much information about potential rental properties as possible. When purchasing a property to rent out, ensure you inspect at least two years worth of rental records.

Never forget your primary goals while investing in property. Figure out whether you are trying to meet your long-term goals or your short-term ones. If the prospective investment does not meet your goals, do not look into it further. Most property owners fail when meeting their needs and end up losing in the investment.

It is best to purchase a house that only has a fireplace in the family room unless you reside in a climate that makes it necessary to have more. It can truly be a pain to keep multiple unnecessary fireplaces clean.

Become familiar with the type of homes in your targeted neighborhood. It?s not always the best plan to pick the most showy house. This is due to the fact that smaller houses tend to bring down the value of larger ones.

When deciding to buy real estate, always take into account your goals. Decide if you have short term goals or long term goals to be met. If the investment is a mismatch to those goals, then give it a pass. There are many property owners that fail to check if there needs will be met, and will have a losing investment on their hands.

TIP! If you want to make a terrific real estate investment, give serious thought to remodeling and repair work. You?ll see an immediate increase in the value of your home.

It is smart to decide what you will accept before you start negotiating to buy a piece of real estate. Look at all of the issues involved, and determine your expectations for every one of them. Make sure you stick to the important issues during negotiations. Keep in mind that you can?t get everything through negotiation, some things will require flexibility.

Get some information about the housing market in the area. Give City-data.com a visit or any other sites like it so you can learn about the average housing prices, number of foreclosures and other relevant market conditions within a 15 mile radius. Other things you may want to investigate are local unemployment rates, income levels and schools. In some cases, a good location and product may override the local trend.

If a seller refuses your offer, try to make compromises and negotiate with them. The seller might be willing to do some repairs or cover the closing costs, in order to make the sale possible.

Assume that needed repairs are a given when you are considering purchased any foreclosed home. Most foreclosed homes have sat vacant for a period of time, and have not had regular maintenance. Many foreclosed homes may have pests, and might need a new HVAC system.

TIP! Try and be moderate in your negotiations in regards to real estate. Most people are too aggressive in aiming for the very best deal.

Keep an open mind in regard to what elements are the most critical in your real estate hunt. Sometimes you must choose between two major features if the price of having both falls outside of your price range. If you cannot find the particular home in the right area, shop for the type of home in a different area or vice versa.

If you get involved with investing in foreclosed properties, having an attorney who specializes in real estate might be something to think about. Complications can often arise during foreclosure or pre-foreclosure deals and it is also a good idea to have a legal representative that is looking out for your interests. This could actually end up saving you a great deal of money in the long run.

Before you begin house hunting, examine your credit report. Once you get your hands on copies of your credit reports, comb through them thoroughly and respond to any red flags there. The better your credit score, the more likely you will be to obtain a mortgage with rates that are reasonable.

If there is a house that you are thinking of buying, go to the internet to check the sex offender registry of the house?s neighborhood. You can do this quickly and easily, and it could keep your whole family safer in your new home. The information is publicly available and free to obtain. It is highly unlikely that any real estate agent would have knowledge of the sex offender status within a neighborhood, and if they do, you won?t find out about it. Make sure you learn as much as you can.

TIP! Once you found a house you want to buy, you must find a professional Realtor to help with the process. You?ll want to find an agent you can trust.

If you can?t make a traditional down payment yet, look into assistance programs. If you can do this and have the seller pay the closing costs, you can save a considerable amount of money off the purchase of your home.

When you are buying a property, have some extra money so that you can pay for costs that you did not expect. Buyers will often calculate the final closing costs by combining the amount for the down payment, any points that go to the bank, as well as any prorated taxes for real estate. In many cases, closing costs have extra items like improvement bonds, school taxes, and other things that depend on your area.

Find a good, experienced broker or real estate agent to work with you while you look for potential investment properties. They have resources that you don?t have at your disposal. Agents and brokers will be able to efficiently use their specialized MLS listing software to search, sort and find the right property for you. The MLS tools accessible to professionals are more detailed than those available to consumers, and they?ll be able to advise you with greater insight.

TIP! When you are in the market for a new home, use people with whom you are familiar or have worked with previously. Sometimes the easy way out such as using the realtor?s inspector, is not such a good idea.

More than likely, when you purchase real estate, it will be the biggest decision and purchase you may ever make. The more education you have about real estate in general, and your potential purchase in particular, the better shape you will be

Combat Pay and the Earned Income Tax Credit

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has been a part of the tax code, in one form or the other, since 1975.?According to the IRS the EITC exists, ?in part to offset the burden of social security taxes and to provide an incentive to work.? Because of the numerous changes to the ETIC, the credit can be rather confusing and at times not even claimed. This is especially true of military members who deploy to combat zones. If members returning from a combat deployment are not careful preparing their taxes, they could miss the tax savings this credit provides.?To help you understand the credit better I?ll outline the basics of the credit and how combat pay interacts with the credit.

What is the Earned Income Tax Credit?? As mentioned above the purpose of the EITC is to offset social security taxes and provide an incentive to work for those who are low to moderate income. I know, you?re in the military already?you have an incentive to work. So, for most folks reading this article the EITC can help offset social security taxes. And this leads to an important attribute of the credit.?It is refundable. What that means is that you can potentially get more from the credit than you owe/paid in taxes. For example if your tax return showed that you should get a refund of $1,000 before the EITC and you qualify for a $1,000 EITC you will receive a total refund of $2,000 even though you may have ended up paying $0 income taxes for the year. This is not the case for most credits which stop when your tax bill gets to zero.?That is how the credit offsets Social Security taxes. The criteria for qualifying for the EITC are complex (see the IRS website for complete details) but here are some basics:

  • You must have earned income (wages, tips, self-employment income)
  • You must be at least 25 and younger than 65
  • You must file as Single, Head of Household (HOH) or Married Filing Jointly (you cannot file Married Filing Singly)
  • You must have less than $3,150 in investment income (2011)
  • You must meet Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) limitations?which vary based on marital status and number of dependents.? Some examples (2011 numbers) are:
    • Married Filing Jointly?with 3 or more qualifying children:? $43,998 or an E-7 with up to 17 years of service
    • Single/HOH with one qualifying child:? $36,052 or an E-5 at any years of service point
    • Married Filing Jointly with no children:? $18,740 or E-1
    • Single with no children:? $13,660; no full year military member qualifies

The income/rank combinations above assume the?military member was not deployed to a combat zone?during the year. Some other important facts about the EITC are:

  • Unlike other credits the EITC starts low, increases as income increases and then is reduced as your income passes a certain point.? So in certain circumstances increasing your income may increase your refund!
  • The maximum EITC is substantial
    • $5,751 for 3 or more qualifying children
    • $5,113 for 2 qualifying children
    • $3,094 for 1 qualifying child
    • $464 for no children

I?ll now take a look at how a combat deployment changes things.

How does Combat Pay and EITC work?? As you probably already know, combat pay is not subject to Federal Income Tax (but it is subject to Social Security Tax and Medicare Tax).?Since?it isn?t reported as wages for Federal Income Tax on your W-2, your initial calculation of EITC won?t include your combat pay. In a rare sign of flexibility, the IRS allows you to choose whether to include your combat pay as earned income when you calculate the EITC.?You can leave it out or add it in?.but it is all or nothing.?Why would you want to do that?? Well remember, the amount of the credit starts low and increases with income and then tapers off when you reach a certain point (think of it as a mesa out in the desert west). So by adding in your combat pay you may actually increase your refund. I?ll demonstrate with a couple of examples.

  • A married E-9 with 3 qualifying children whose income exceeds the threshold for the credit under normal circumstances deploys to a combat zone for 6 months and has 6 months of combat pay excluded from income: In this case, if the E-9 leaves the combat pay excluded there is a high probability that the family will earn the EITC and increase their refund.
  • A Single/HOH E-4 with?2 qualifying children deploys to a combat zone for the entire calendar year (Jan-Dec) and has all combat pay excluded from income for the entire year: No matter what the E-4 decides there will be no income tax due on the combat pay. But if the E-4 claims the EITC by choosing to include the combat pay in the EITC calculation he/she will receive a refund, potentially in the thousands of dollars, even though no income taxes were withheld.?The same could potentially hold true if the E-4 deployed for fewer months during the year?.depending on the exact circumstances.
  • A single or married taxpayer that wouldn?t normally qualify for the EITC deploys to a combat zone for an extended period: Like the E-9 above if the taxpayer chooses to exclude combat pay from the EITC calculation there is a high probability of earning the credit and increasing the refund.

The EITC is complicated and there are a lot of rules, especially on qualifying children, but it is a very valuable credit. If you deployed to a combat zone in 2011 there is a good possibility you may qualify for the credit?even if you never have before. It is worth it to see what the different choices in relation to your combat pay can earn you.

Google Apps to shed support for Internet Explorer 8, your Windows XP machine won't cut it

Google Apps logo

Google has been aggressive about keeping Google Apps owners on the same (web) page. The company's cloud platform typically won't acknowledge any browser more than one version out of date, and it's about to put that rapid upgrade strategy to the test by dropping support for Internet Explorer 8. On November 15th, shortly after IE10 arrives in sync with Windows 8, Google will leave IE8 web app users to fend for themselves -- and, by extension, Windows XP users without an alternative browser. While the cutoff doesn't amount to a full-fledged block, Google Apps users still stuck in 2009 will be reminded that they're on their own until they upgrade. Is it the end of the world for web apps on older PCs? No, but it's clear that their days are numbered.

(AP) ? Two-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White faces charges of public intoxication and vandalism, accused of drunkenly destroying a phone at a Nashville hotel and ending up in the hospital after he hit his head.

Officers responded to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday after a drunken man identified as the 26-year-old White pulled a fire alarm, forcing the hotel to evacuate all guests. An employee also reported seeing White destroy a hotel phone.

White tried to leave the hotel in a cab before being stopped by a hotel guest who told the driver police had been called. According to police, White kicked at the man before running away. The man chased him and they collided when White turned around. White, who is also one of the world's top skateboarders, fell back and hit his head against a fence, police said.

White, who appeared to be drunk, was given the opportunity to sign misdemeanor citations and refused, police said. A spokeswoman for Baptist Hospital said White was treated there and released on Monday before being arrested and booked by police. A mug shot released by police shows White with a black eye.

White was released by police late Monday afternoon on his own recognizance. His court date was set for Oct. 10.

His manager had no immediate comment when reached by The Associated Press.

White won a gold medal in Turin at the 2006 Olympics and in 2010 at the Vancouver Games, and he is an action sports superstar whether skateboarding during the summer or snowboarding in the winter. He's also a multimillionaire with a clothing line and signature video game who expanded last year with a company selling skateboards, BMX bikes and other equipment.

White also has cleaned up at the Winter X Games, winning medals every year since 2002.

Small Business on Capitol Hill : Managing :: American Express ...

September 16, 2012

As election day draws near, both sides of the aisle claim that they know what?s best for the nation?s small business owners. Republicans have advocated tax cuts and cutting regulations while Democrats have talked about inroads in getting more funding to more entrepreneurs. Sen. Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland and a member of the Small Business Committee, and Rep. (AP) ? Minnesota gave Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts too many chances Sunday.

Eventually, the No. 1 draft pick made the Vikings pay.

Indy's new quarterback threw two touchdown passes, moved the Colts 45 yards in 23 seconds on their final drive and even got the Vikings to jump offside with 13 seconds left in the game to set up a 53-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri for a 23-20 victory ? Luck's first career win.

"To get a win, was something I really wanted for this team," he said after making his home debut. "For me personally, I didn't want it looming over us for the next game."

Sunday's victory shows how much has changed in the past year, since the Colts (1-1) were dealing with an 0-13 start and months of questions about going winless.

This year's completely revamped team won't have to contend with any part of that.

The biggest change, of course, is at quarterback where Luck has replaced the longtime face of the franchise, Peyton Manning. Around the stadium there was a mixture of the new No. 12 jerseys and the old No. 18 jerseys, though at the end of the day, everyone was applauding Luck's composure.

In his home debut, Luck looked solid, not spectacular, going 20 of 31 for 224 yards. He did not throw an interception, was sacked twice despite having three starting offensive linemen out the entire second half and he did something Manning couldn't during his rookie season: win in September. Manning opened his career 0-4, including two losses at home before finally beating Ryan Leaf and the San Diego Chargers for his first career win on Oct. 4, 1998.

But this game had as much to do with the Vikings errors as it did with Luck's success.

"We did some things today that really hurt us. We hurt ourselves," Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said. 'We've got to figure it out. We've got to learn from it and not let it happen going forward. We really shot ourselves in the foot a few different times."

Luck did his part, though, by repeatedly outsmarting the veterans.

He burned Minnesota's zone defense for a 30-yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne with 7 seconds left in the first half.

He led the Colts 53 yards for a field goal to open the second half on a drive that used using up 7:54 and was extended by a roughing the kicker penalty on fourth-and-5 and again when Jared Allen was called for a personal foul after tackling Luck out of bounds.

Then, after Minnesota (1-1) tied the score at 20 with 31 seconds left in the game, Luck evaded the Vikings pressure and threw 20-yard completions to Donnie Avery and Wayne before getting the offside call that took the ball from the Minnesota 40 to the Vikings 35.

"It's just amazing that the guy's able to go out there and do the things he does as a rookie," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said after getting his first career win.

Sure, Luck made a few miscues ? such as taking the 17-yard sack on third-and-5 with 3:00 to play. Or spiking the ball when the clock was already stopped just before Vinatieri came onto the field for his winning kick.

But Luck never let those minor mistakes get under his skin.

"I guess some people were under the impression that the clock was going to run, so I guess we looked a little foolish killing the clock when it was already stopped ," he said, laughing as he explained why he spiked the ball with 12 seconds to play. "Oh well."

Still, the Vikings had chances.

After settling for two field goals in the first 54 minutes, quarterback Christian Ponder rallied the Vikings late and got the big break he needed when defensive end Cory Redding batted his fourth-down pass up into the air. Kyle Rudolph got his hands on the ball, too, tipping it up again and toward teammate Stephen Burton, who hung onto the ball for a 7-yard TD. That made it 20-13 with 5:07 to play.

Ponder was 27 of 35 for 245 yards with two TDs, but was sacked four times. Percy Harvin caught 12 passes for 104 yards.

And following that big third-down sack on Luck and Pat McAfee's worst punt of the day, Minnesota took over at the Indy 47 with 2:29 to play. The Vikings finally tied the score and appeared headed to overtime when Rudolph hung on for the 6-yard TD reception with 31 seconds left.

"You want to score and the defense has to go out there and hold in that situation," Frazier said. "That's our league. In that situation where we were, we needed to get the ball in the end zone and we got to go out and play defense."

But that gave Luck another chance to win it ? and Minnesota another chance to break down ? and behind Luck, the Colts took advantage again.

"When you win tight games like this, it builds confidence," Vinatieri said. "You have to win at home. Our crowd was great and loud and you have to win those games at home."

NOTES: Avery tied his career high with nine receptions. He also had 111 yards. ... Colts center Samson Satele left the game in the third quarter with an undisclosed knee injury. Right tackle Winston Justice and left guard Joe Reitz (knee) were inactive. ... During one stretch Sunday, the Colts ran 31 plays, compared with four for the Vikings ? including a kneel-down at the end of the first half. ... The Colts have won all three home games (two in preseason) this year, but have lost all three on road. ... Blair Walsh has made all six of his field-goal attempts in his first two games including a 51-yarder to open Sunday's scoring.
