Struggling Young Readers Like Kindles

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Middle school students in a reading improvement class liked using e-readers for a variety or reasons, and felt their reading improved as a result. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Kindles, Nooks and other E-readers catch flack for threatening the future of printed books. But reading itself may get a boost from the devices. For example, a study of struggling students found that the kids felt better about reading after a course in which they used Amazon Kindles. The research is in the International Journal of Applied Science and Technology. [Twyla Miranda et al, Reluctant Readers in Middle School: Successful Engagement with Text Using the E-Reader]

For two months, 199 middle-schoolers in a reading improvement class in Texas had 15-to-25 minutes every day when they were free to read on the Kindle. In general, the students felt the device improved their reading ability. And they tended to enjoy using an e-reader.

They noted the ease of carrying multiple books in one device, and the feeling that reading was suddenly a high-tech 21st century activity rather than a boring waste of time. And some low-level readers who might otherwise be embarrassed to be seen with a simple book liked keeping their peers in the dark about what title they were reading. In the old days, one had to use a fake book-cover to achieve that level of secrecy.

Business Ethics and Marketing Dairy Cattle Genetics

Let?s make something very clear from the start. This is not a discussion about the ethics of genetic tools to increase the rate of advancement. If you are not clear about our position on this, read the many articles on the benefits of genomics. This is a discussion of the almost daily decisions breeders have to make, when it comes to the promotion of their herd. They are faced with many tough decisions and often ethics comes into play. Breeders must choose between taking the high road at a perceived financial loss or taking the low road and becoming a perceived ?winner.?

There is no question that, when it comes to promoting your genetics, ethics plays a huge role in how you do it. From getting cattle ready for the show ring or the classifier and feeling the pressure to make sure she looks her best, or sometimes even better than her best, to the ethics of photo manipulation. Many of these questions can shake you to your moral core.

Show Ethics

For years there has been great debate about what is acceptable and what is not. I can still remember as a young child watching a grown man whom at the time I had admired greatly (will remain nameless) threaten my father with physical harm, because Dad was enforcing the code of ethics at the Royal Winter Fair (part of his job at the time). It actually was a pretty scary moment for me. I was convinced it was going to come to punches. Knowing that this man was much larger than my father and that Dad has a pit-bull mentality, I was convinced it was going to get messy.

Everyone has the wants to win. There is no question about that. However, for some, the desire to win, and the perceived financial gain that comes with it can make them do things that you would never normally consider doing. Having worked on the ?show circuit? I have heard the full range of justification for the actions that some (and I do say some as it is by far not all) are willing to take.

Just before ultrasounds were introduced into the Royal, many on the show circuit made comments similar to ?They should just throw the rules out the window and let the best man win?. I have never forgotten that comment, or the person who made it. It was person who I have a very close friendship with and a great deal of respect for, but on this issue I could not DISAGREE more. Not for the reasons you may think. I disagree for the effect that it has on our ability to market cattle internationally. If all our cattle are perceived as fake then why would people want to buy progeny out of them? Since the chances of you getting an animal as good as what you?re seeing is, obviously, very unlikely.

Photo Ethics

Has Photo Enhancement Gone Too Far?This leads into another touchy subject that I set off the other day with our article ?Has Photo Enhancement Gone Too Far?? but ties in to the same core issue. If buyers or potential buyers cannot be confident that the animal or genetics they will get is what they see, are you really winning? I am sure in the minds of those who make these changes they think they are doing the correct thing. Are they really? Are you really helping the breeder sell more? Or are you hurting the industry as a whole because you are causing some to distrust the legitimacy of the image? Yesterday at Ontario Spring Discovery, I had a talk with Patty Jones about this issue, a woman whose passion for dairy cattle is second to none. Patty has probably done as much for the marketing and promotion of cattle as anyone in the world. Moreover, (while not quoting Patty directly) there is no question (as there never is when it comes to Patty?s position on anything) that Patty sees the harm that those who have gone over the line are doing to the rest.

Am I saying that it is not possible that on that day they got a great shot? No. I have been there and had it happen. We use to kid that a cow had to look great twice in her life, once on classification day and once on photo day. Photographers like Patty are great at what they do. There is no question that when we call Patty to picture our cattle there is no question she will do her best to get the shot. However, she does so within her moral boundaries. That means yes, she will put shaving cream in the topline or make-up on the udder to make the veins stand out (much like a beautiful woman does before going out). But that is where she draws the line. She never puts veins that were not there, or ?extends? their depth of rib or height of rear udder.

Even though we all know the technology is there to do so much more, Patty believes that it?s not worth the cost of her name. While it?s often been said that damn Patty got a great shot of that cow, it has never been at the expense of her ethics. It?s for that reason that people (myself included) have such respect for Patty.

Genetic Ethics

Has Genomics Knocked Out the Hot House Herds? As we pointed out in our article, ?Has Genomics Knocked Out the Hot House Herds?? Genomics has greatly changed the ability or a breeder to affect how their cattle rank on the top indexes. Having said that, there are still many ethical debates that a breeder must face. I have seen very strong moral based breeders be pushed to their limits to achieve success. The need to provide for your family or win can be a very challenging choice indeed.

While you know that, they are pushing the limits, the number of excuses for why it is ok start to be many. For me it becomes a more a question of the system than certain players. For the most part these breeders know how the system works and are working within the system. Is the answer to punish these breeders for working the system? Alternatively, is there a need to adjust the system itself? Having grown up in a household where the system was talked about on a daily basis, there is no question that I believe the system can evolve and adjust to account for changes. Much like the NHL had to change, as the players got bigger, stronger, and faster, so does the proof system. Genomics takes a great step forward in this process, but there are also many other changes that can still be made.

The Bullvine Bottom Line

When it comes to marketing dairy cattle genetics, breeders face many ethical questions. This is no different from many other industries where the ethical position is changing. In the corporate world, there has been a huge trend to transparency and accountability. I think this is what we are starting to find a call for, when it comes to marketing dairy cattle. There is a huge potential for ?new? money to come into the marketplace. Many breeders who were afraid to spend on top cattle because they were afraid to be ?scammed? are now starting to look at it again. Genomics has done a great deal restore confidence to the market place. By being transparent and accountable, the potential profits far outweigh current levels. We see the amazing potential for well-informed breeders to breed and market great cattle. That is the reason why we started ?The Bullvine?.

How to Manage the Perception of C-level and Realize Tax ...

March 30, 2012

By?Richard Cornelisse,?Big4.com Guest Blogger

This Blog is about managing the perception of C-level and realize own tax objectives.?Writing a set of standard indirect tax objectives is not that difficult. It is a paper exercise.?Why? At the moment that these objectives are validated, specific goals have to be set?within these boundaries.?The goals have to be specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and timely (SMART goals). ?You need to know where you want to go and set up a roadmap how to get there. The next steps is to sell this within the own organization in order to get access to the tools to make it happen. That might mean: ?Managing the perception of C-level?.

Benchmarking

Benchmark against trends in the market could be supportive. It provides an overview of the experiences of others and is useful for setting own priorities going forward.?This is the first step, measuring ongoing performance the next.

The?Indirect Tax Strategic?plan has various building blocks. To make it more user-friendly, the benchmark findings I gathered from Big4 surveys, are tagged to these building blocks.

Watch here via YouTube

The root cause of defects

If you look at the overall picture some defects shown are the cause effect of other defects. Based on these finding, the root cause is likely the company?s culture, organizational structure, overall business processes and/or maybe a wrong perception of top management about indirect tax.

This follows from this ?top down? overview:

  • Executive considering indirect tax not material and a high priority. The low risks evaluation of indirect tax likely results in budget constraints
  • Lack of specific VAT/GST measurable performance goals visible to the CFO
  • Lack of proper prioritization between lower value activities and higher value activities. Indirect Tax function has many competing priorities and insufficient time or resources
  • Historically, the tax function in general focused on other areas, allowing other departments and local offices a free hand to deal with the company?s indirect taxes
  • Finance and Accounting is in the majority considered accountable for Indirect Tax
  • It seems that the indirect tax department is often the last to know what is going on, is forced to be the show stopper when other parts of the business thought they were are ready to ?go live?

I refer to my guest Blog ?The Conflict Between ?Actual to Budget? Controls and ?Budget-based Compensation Targets?. That Blog dealt with company?s culture, business objectives and the conflict sometimes of personal performance targets.

Some governance and mandate needed first

If you know 1) the current state, 2) where you want to go and 3) have set up a roadmap how to get there, it is important to get a clear view of what is needed to meet these goals.

Someone wrote in literature that the first step to improve indirect tax management is to put someone in charge. Is it that easy or is that an example of one minute managership?

Assume that the significant majority of the findings are applicable to your organization. Do you want to have end responsibility under these circumstances? ?Is delegating end responsibility to a new recruited global or regional leader going to contribute any positive change?

Having the responsibility without the tools is like being Michael Schumacher without a car. Not likely you are going to win a Formula One race. That means an unhappy Michael.

Accountability for indirect tax is often still in Finance & Accounting. ?If you look at the findings is it likely that top management is going to support any change via issuing new policies about governance and mandate ? More important, provide the new recruited or appointed indirect tax leader with the necessary tools for success such as:

  • Budget
  • Extra resources
  • Performance evaluation of people who work outside the tax function but has a role in managing indirect taxes ?(e.g. people in the finance function preparing VAT return, Shared Service Center staff re posting of AP invoices).

Without that support being end responsibility is in my view not a favorable position.?If culture or organizational structure has to change, involvement of top management is mandatory. Without their support you are likely on a mission impossible.

How to get their support?

Being effective and efficient at the same time

Is being fully compliant a realistic goal?

Effectiveness is the degree to which organization meets and exceeds the needs and requirement of their customer. When is effectiveness achieved??For the tax function if all risks are managed and opportunities spotted and implemented.

As indirect tax resources are normally scarce it is important that the available time is used in the most efficient and effective way. I refer to the findings about?competing priorities and insufficient time or resources. Besides that managing all risks is cost inefficient and will have impact on efficiency beyond indirect tax. Efficiency refers to the amount of resources consumed in being effective. Efficiency can be measured in time, cost, labor, or value. It is about being efficient and effective at the same time and therefore about making the right choices.

In order to allocate resources to risk and reward areas that matter, the maximum level of risk appetite?of the company in the worst case scenarios need to be determined. This facilitates such prioritization as?defined acceptable levels of risk means that resources do not spend time on further reducing risks that are already at an acceptable level.

Speaking the language of C-level

What are the?requirements of client satisfaction?of the C-level.?Based on the above it seems that C-level consider indirect tax of lower priority than often the indirect tax function does. Is the cause effect misinterpretation or not understanding and speaking the same language?

The first step ? to achieve mutual understanding ? is to get agreement with top management?on the level of indirect tax risk appetite of the company in the worse case scenario.

What do we know further about C-level ?

They have to manage a lot and that means that prioritization is part of their natural skill set. It is about measure of risk and opportunity (selection via being material or not) and if indeed material what is needed to make it happen (balancing costs against gain).

If you know the risk appetite, you have to identify the lowest performing indirect tax processes that have the most direct impact on the company?s business objectives (e.g. benchmark and measure). ?Short problem statements?for the gaps found?should be written. It should include an estimate of savings or the amount of hours currently lost due to rework.?These statements can?subsequently?be prioritized and validated with top management.

Various solutions are presented with cost benefit analysis, so a constructive discussion with top management can be held about what is needed to close these gaps (e.g. budget and/or resources needed or necessary change of systems, processes and controls etc).

In the worse case the gap(s) will not be closed, but at least you have achieved mutual awareness and hopefully responsibility. However, if the problem is material and addressed in the right way it more than likely it will be dealt accordingly. ?It has become now a mutual responsibility.

How do you see this? Do you agree?

Budget First Steps to Financial Freedom | personal finance application

In these difficult economic times, the middle class is being squeezed more than ever.? As unemployment continues to rise the future is not exactly bright.? That is why everyone should be trying to increase their savings while trying to reduce their spending.? No matter how solid you may think your employment is, in todays economy and for the foreseeable future nobody is guaranteed employment.? Even the once sacred government job is no longer secure.? Municipalities, counties, and states are all experiencing budget crunches and in some communities even police have been laid off.  Let???s not even talk about the federal governments problems.

So you want to save more but are currently barely making ends meet.? The first step to improving your financial situation is to develop a household budget.? One starts by analyzing their current spending habits.? The best way to get your arms around this is to use your debit card for everything you purchase for one month.  You now have a record of where the months income went.? If you dont have the debit card or dont like the idea, you can start by sitting down and listing all your monthly bills, then estimate what you spend on food, entertainment, maintaining your living space and vehicle, etc.  The challenge is to actually record these expenditures for a month as most people tend to underestimate their actual spending.  The bottom line is we all need to develop a household budget or spending plan and review its accuracy in order to effect any change in our financial circumstances.

This process can be greatly simplified by contacting a certified credit counselor at a non-profit credit counseling organization, as they should be willing to help you through this process at no-charge to you.?

The next step is to review your assets and liabilities. Assets are what you own, house, car, clothes, and other personal property.? Liabilities are what you owe to others.? For instance, in the asset column, youll list your vehicle at its current value.? In the liability column you will list what you have left to pay on your vehicle loan.  If the amount you owe is less than the value of the car it is a net asset.? If it is the other way, you owe more than it is worth; it ends up in the net liability column.? The same is true or your house or anything else that you have financed. The difference between one???s assets and their liabilities is one???s Net Worth.  If this is a negative number it means you owe more on your assets than they are worth.

Now that you have an accurate assessment of what your current financial picture looks like, you can set goals and use budgeting as a way to achieve them.

For many younger adults the goal of Home-ownership is common, with the most common roadblock to achieving it being their credit situation.? For the past twenty years Americans have enjoyed ???loose credit? but at a price.? (Interest rates on credit cards for most have climbed into double digits, with the average approaching 20% APRs.? In round numbers, if you are carrying $10,000 in credit card debt, it is likely to be costing you over $2,000 per year just in finance charges.

This is where a non-profit credit-counseling organization can really help.? After going through your financial analysis with your counselor, they will discuss your financial goals with you and help you develop that spending plan to achieve them.? If you are burdened with considerable credit card debt, they have programs that can get your interest rates back into single, fixed digits and are designed to have you out of debt in five years or less.

For the potential homebuyer that has a high debt to income ratio these programs can help you get into a house years earlier than going it alone and paying those high interest rates.

(AP) ? The survival of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul rests with a Supreme Court seemingly split over ideology and, more particularly, in the hands of two Republican-appointed justices.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy put tough questions to administration lawyers defending the health care law during three days of arguments that suggested they have strong reservations about the individual insurance requirement at the heart of the overhaul and, indeed, whether the rest of the massive law can survive if that linchpin fails.

But Roberts and Kennedy also asked enough pointed questions of the law's challengers to give the overhaul's supporters some hope. In any event, justices' questions at arguments do not always foretell their positions.

The court's decision, due in June, will affect the way virtually every American receives and pays for health care and surely will reverberate in this year's campaigns for president and Congress. The political effects could be even larger if the court votes 5-4 with all its Republican-appointed justices prevailing over all the Democratic appointees to strike down the entire law, or several important parts of it.

Not since 2000, when the court resolved the Bush v. Gore dispute over Florida election returns that sealed George W. Bush's election as president, has a Supreme Court case drawn so much attention.

The court wrapped up public arguments Wednesday on the overhaul, which aims to extend health insurance to most of the 50 million Americans now without it. The first and biggest issue the justices must decide is whether the centerpiece of the law, the requirement that nearly all Americans carry insurance or pay a penalty, is constitutional.

Wednesday's morning session was unusual in that it assumed, for purposes of argument, a negative answer to that central question. What should happen to other provisions, the justices and lawyers debated, if the court strikes down the requirement? If the justices are following their normal practice, they had not even met to take a preliminary vote in the case before all argument concluded.

Questions at the court this week showed a strong ideological division between the liberal justices who seem inclined to uphold the law in its entirety and the conservative justices whose skepticism about Congress' power to force people to buy insurance suggests deep trouble for the insurance requirement, and possibly the entire law.

The divide on the court reflects a similar split in public opinion about the law, which Congress approved two years ago when Democrats controlled both the House and Senate.

Liberal and conservative justices alike appeared to accept the administration's argument that at least two important insurance changes are so closely tied to the must-have-coverage requirement that they could not survive without it: provisions requiring insurers to extend coverage to people with existing medical problems and limiting how much those companies can charge in premiums based on a person's age or health.

Less clear was whether the court would conclude that the entire law, with its hundreds of unrelated provisions, would have to be cast aside.

The justices also spent part of the day considering a challenge by 26 states to expansion of the federal-state Medicaid program for low-income Americans ? an important feature which alone was expected to extend coverage to 15 million people and which no lower court has rejected. The conservative justices appeared open to the states' argument that the expansion is unconstitutionally coercive.

Audio of Wednesday morning's argument can be found at: http://apne.ws/GX1p23 ; the afternoon argument at: http://apne.ws/GXdZOP .

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. took a few seconds at the end of the Medicaid argument to make a final plea for the court to uphold the entire law, which he said would "secure the blessings of liberty" for millions of Americans by providing them with affordable health care.

Verrilli told the court that Congress had made a policy decision to fight the high cost of medical care through the new law. "I would urge the court to respect that judgment," he said.

Paul Clement, the lawyer for the states challenging the law, answered that it would be a strange definition of liberty to make people who may not want it buy health care insurance. And he called Congress' threat to cut all Medicaid funding from states that refuse to expand the program "a direct threat to our federalism."

Neat Home Improvement Pointers!

Tackling home improvement projects is something that can provide tangible benefits for you and your family. The best way to ensure success, however, is to thoroughly educate yourself on the best techniques for your particular project. Take the advice and tips in this article to heart and you will be on your way to making your house, the home of your dreams.

?

One of the most effective and reasonably priced home improvement projects ? which is often overlooked ? is to have your home professionally cleaned by a company like Proclean domestic cleaning glasgow and carpet cleaning glasgow. These firms are experts and will soon have your home looking the way you want it.

?

Don?t enter into a large home improvement project without getting the necessary permits. Any large project, such as building an addition, converting a garage into a living space, building a deck or demolishing part of a permanent structure, requires proper permits from the city. Make sure that the permit is prominently displayed at the work site, so that a visiting inspector will be able to check that the work is being done properly.

Using wheat board is a way to have cabinets made that are great for the environment. There is also wood that is certified as sustainable but is of exactly the same quality as all other types of wood. Composite wood is not a good choice as it releases harmful chemicals into the air.

Check all your power tools before operating them. Look at all the safety guides and protections. Sometimes professionals will remove safety guides from their power tools because they think this makes their job easier. Make sure all of your safety guides are attached and in working order before operating any power tool.

Adding dead bolts or chains to ones doors will be a home improvement job that will strengthen ones home security and help deter people from breaking into ones home. It can also help bring one some peace of mind knowing that they are that much safer at night when their sleeping.

As you can see, choosing what you need to successfully complete a home improvement job isn?t as difficult as it may appear. It just requires doing research, reading regulations, working hard, and asking a lot of questions. The work will pay off, once you see how it can help your home.

Service Intervals for High Mileage Vehicles in | Auto Repair Place

Nowadays, everyone in , is paying more at the gas pump. For some families in the greater area, it adds up to several hundred dollars every month. That?s got to come out of the budget somewhere. Throughout North America, people are putting off buying a new car. They plan on keeping their old vehicle for a year or two longer than before.

Even now, 2/3 of the personal vehicles on our local , roads have over 75,000 miles on them. The average age of vehicles is over nine years. And most people in can?t afford to be stranded or inconvenienced by a break down. So following a regular maintenance schedule, like our personal diet and exercise plans, is actually critical to preserving your investment.

Knowing what to do for a higher-mileage vehicle can be challenging because many owners? manuals don?t publish service intervals after 60,000 miles. It just means that you need to be better at keeping records and planning your preventive maintenance.

You can start by figuring that services with a recommended interval should still be performed on that interval, even after you?re past the tables in your service manual. For example, a service might be recommended every 15,000 miles. Well, just keep doing it every 15,000 miles for as long as you have your car.

Now higher mileage engines operate under more stress. Some experts suggest that the severe service schedule is more appropriate and that routine service should be performed at shorter intervals. Check with your owners? manual or service advisor at to see if the severe service schedule is right for your vehicle.

And keeping up with your full-service oil change schedule is important for a couple of reasons. First, older engines have had more time to build up oil sludge. Skipping an oil change here and there can really compound the problem for your .

The second benefit is that your other fluids are routinely checked and topped off. Power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant and transmission fluid can be kept at optimal levels even though the older seals and gaskets are leaking more than when they were new.

And speaking of older seals and gaskets: they start to dry-out and become more brittle with age. You may want to consider using high mileage formulation oil and fluids. These products contain special additives to condition seals and gaskets to keep them from leaking. The high mileage formulations cost more than standard products, but they are well worth it in terms of preventing serious repair bills down the road.

Older vehicles in the , area need repairs and replacements that newer ones don?t. Things like timing belts, radiator hoses, suspension work, anti-lock brakes, air bags, water pumps, alternators and batteries. That may seem like a lot of stuff to have done, but it works out to be cheaper than new car payments.

With a high-mileage vehicle, a couple of relationships will become pretty important. The first is with your service advisor at . You need someone you trust to take care of your car and be mindful of your needs. Ask for help to develop a plan to keep your vehicle road-worthy that works within your budget, and for the , area driving conditions.

The next relationship is with your vehicle itself. We?re not talking about naming your car or tucking it in at night. We just mean ? pay attention and get to know your vehicle. Notice unusual sounds, smells, vibrations, etc. Then you can describe the changes to your service advisor at and head off problems. We can?t do anything about the price of gas, but we can properly maintain Old Faithful to keep it safely and economically on the local , roads.

Meatless Monday: Carrot fritters

Grated carrots mixed with a little bit of mashed potatoes for a delicious carrot patty or fritter.

I had a difficulty deciding on title for this post. I'm not sure if these are carrot fritters or little carrot patties. When I think of fritters, I think of a thick liquid type of batter. But then again, someone commented on the Guyanese pancakes a couple of weeks ago and said that they looked more like fritters than pancakes. Oh well, call it what you will.

Recently there was a glut of carrots on the local market, here in Barbados. I did a few recipes for a local publication to encourage people to buy the carrots and do more with them than just steam or make coleslaw or carrot cake.

This recipe was one of those things whereby I just put a little bit of this and that as I went along.

Please, as always, feel free to adapt it to suit your taste.

Carrot Fritters/Patties
Yield:?10 - 12

?2 packed cups finely grated carrots
3/4 cup fresh bread crumbs (or substitute 1/2 cup dried breadcrumbs)
1/2 cup mashed potato (optional:I put this in because I had it on hand)
1 egg, room temperature
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro/coriander
Oil for shallow frying

Add all the ingredients to a bowl, except the oil, and mix well.

Form into little patties 2 inches wide, 1/2 inch thick.

Add oil to frying pan and heat on medium heat.

Fry patties until brown and on one side and then flip and cook on the other side.

Drain on a cooling rack inserted into a sheet pan or on paper towels.Serve with sour cream and chives or Greek Yogurt.
