Congressional Baseball Game Ends In Republican Slaughter

WASHINGTON -- The political scorecard stood tied -- a Supreme Court victory for the Democrats, an attorney general contempt charge for the Republicans. It was time to decide Thursday's victor -- on the baseball field.

For the 51st year, members of Congress took to the diamond for the annual congressional baseball game. As usual, it was Republicans vs. Democrats. Away from the steps of the Supreme Court and the halls of Congress, under the Nationals Park lights, the Democrats slaughtered the Republicans, 18 to 5, in seven innings.

"We started off the morning great, we won that one," said the Democrats' pitcher, Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, referring to the Supreme Court's health care ruling. "But then you have to give them a little bit of a win on the Holder contempt-charade-circus this afternoon."

The GOP-led, late-afternoon vote holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress forced both teams to forego pre-game practice. Team managers said the game showed something good about an institution most Americans now hold in disdain.

"This is about baseball and apple pie and what's right about America," said Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the Republican manager. He said he and the Democrats' manager, Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Doyle, were "tighter than ticks" on baseball and charity.

"It's probably the only thing we agree on today -- playing baseball for charity," Doyle said. Later, in the Democrats' dugout, Doyle joked, "If anyone did get hurt today, they would all have insurance."

The teams played for nearly three hours in Washington's sweltering heat, showing diligent fielding, grim turns at bat and almost none of the vitriolic jabs they wield at their day jobs in the Capital. The Democrats brought 17 representatives, including Rep. Linda Sanchez of California. The Republican roster included 36 representatives and a senator, Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Democrats took control in the top of the second inning, scoring 11 runs. Rep. Mark Critz (D-Pa.), pinch-running for Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.), scored first, quickly followed by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), Christopher Murphy (D-Conn.) and Ben Chandler (D-Ky.). With the bases loaded, a hit by Richmond drove in runs by Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) and pinch-runner Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.).

Polis banged out the game's only home run in the fifth inning, capitalizing on poor GOP fieldwork.

All the Republicans' runs were scored pinch-runners: Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (Tenn.), Rep. Robert Dold (Ill.), Rep. Erik Paulsen (Minn.), Rep. Bill Shuster (Pa.), and Rep. Sam Graves (Mo.).

Even in crushing defeat, Republicans found solace. They hit far better than last year. Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) credited the improvement to practice with a staffer who used to play for the Tampa Bay Rays.

"We saw the speed we're going to see tonight, which we didn't have last year," Womack said.

But by the bottom of the fifth, Republicans were down 13 runs -- and they needed a rallying cry.

"Take all that anger over the Supreme Court out," a reporter overheard in the GOP dugout.

Democrats failed to score in the final two innings.

Richmond was MVP of the Democrats' lineup, pitching the entire game and blasting several hits to the outfield. A former varsity pitcher at Morehouse College, the 37-year-old congressman was throwing 80 mph fastballs and said he felt less pressure this year than last.

Fans wasted little time using the day's events to frame their taunts. Democratic staffers shouted "Justice Roberts" and "We got health care" while Republicans were at bat.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took seats in the stands. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined the Democrats in celebrating after the game.

Presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) threw out the first pitch to his son, the senator. Before the game, Ron Paul was inducted into the game's Hall of Fame for a home run he hit out of the park in 1979 (when the game was played on the Four Mile Run field in Alexandria, Va.).

Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.), said the game was a sweet ending to a rough and tumble day in politics.

"It's sort of nice to rub it in a little bit," Baca said. But "once we get back there tomorrow, its back in the trenches."

Blast hits Damascus as Turkey sends troops to border

BEIRUT/ISKENDERUN, Turkey (Reuters) - Rebel forces attacked Syria's main court in central Damascus on Thursday, state television said, while Turkey deployed troops and anti-aircraft rocket launchers to the Syrian border, building pressure on President Bashar al-Assad.

There was a loud explosion and a column of black smoke rose over Damascus, an Assad stronghold that until the last few days had seemed largely beyond the reach of rebels. State television described it as a "terrorist" blast.

Dozens of wrecked and burning cars were strewn over a car park used by lawyers and judges. State news agency SANA said three people were wounded by the bomb hidden in one of the cars.

The guerrilla attack in Damascus coincided with a Turkish military buildup on its border to the north and a growing sense of urgency in Western- and Arab-backed diplomatic efforts to forge a unity government and end 16 months of bloodshed.

Turkish military convoys moved slowly towards the Syrian frontier, reacting to Syria's shooting down of a Turkish warplane over the Mediterranean on Friday. A Turkish official said they were reinforcing air defenses.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, speaking after Friday's incident, ordered his troops to treat any Syrian military element approaching the border as a military target.

He gave no details, but this could cover Syrian forces pursuing rebels towards the border, or patrolling helicopters or warplanes. Syria said at the weekend that it had killed several "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey.

A first substantial convoy of about 30 military vehicles, including trucks loaded with anti-aircraft missile batteries dispatched from Turkey's coastal town of Iskenderun, was moving slowly towards the Syrian border 50 km (30 miles) away.

A Reuters reporter near the town of Antakya saw the convoy moving out of the hills and through small towns on a narrow highway escorted by police.

Early on Thursday, another convoy left a base at Gaziantep and headed for Kilis province, the site of a large camp for Syrian refugees. Video from the DHA agency showed the convoy, of about 12 trucks and transporters, filing through the gates of the base past the hanging Turkish red flag with white crescent moon and star.

David Hartwell, Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's called the Turkish action a 'pragmatic, rational response' after the shooting down of the Turkish aircraft, that Syria insists was flying low and fast in Syrian air space. "Damascus has been warned once. I doubt there will be a second warning."

Turkey, in the front line of Western efforts to press Assad from power, hosts over 33,000 Syrian refugees on its southeastern border as well as units of the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA).

REGIONAL FEARS

"I can confirm there are troops being deployed along the border in Hatay province. Turkey is taking precautions after its jet was shot down," a Turkish official said on condition of anonymity.

He said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved but they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas. He said anti-aircraft guns were being stationed along the border.

At a fortified Turkish border outpost near Reyhanli, a low building with red tile roof perched on a hilltop, troops stood on an observation platform looking across into Syria; but there was no sign of any unusual activity.

Members of the FSA, talking close to the border, told Reuters they did not believe the Turkish deployments were on a large scale or aimed at any crossborder intervention.

"The Turks know that any large scale military action would need international support," a senior FSA commander, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Turkey has in the past spoken of opening a humanitarian corridor on Syrian soil, if the refugee flow grew unmanageable or if the violence and killing became intolerable.

Wary of igniting a regional sectarian conflagration, it has always insisted this would be possible only with United Nations backing. Western- and Arab-backed efforts to forge a joint diplomatic approach with Russia have so far failed.

The FSA has stepped up pressure on Damascus in recent weeks, Thursday's attack marking a new stage in the campaign.

On Wednesday, rebels stormed a pro-Assad Syrian television channel and militants have targeted police and security personnel barracks. In April militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at the Central Bank building.

A senior opposition official said Syrian opposition groups would reject a political transition plan proposed by peace envoy Kofi Annan unless it explicitly required Assad to step down before a unity government is formed.

Diplomatic sources at the United Nations said Annan's proposal did not stipulate Assad's resignation although it does say the unity government could not include figures who jeopardize stability.

"The proposal is still murky to us but I can tell you that if it does not clearly state that Assad must step down, it will be unacceptable to us," said Samir Nashar, an executive member of the international Syrian National Council.

DIPLOMATIC STALEMATE

Annan's transition proposal is one of the main topics that Russia, the other four permanent U.N. Security Council members and key players in the Middle East will discuss at a meeting in Geneva on Saturday, according to United Nations diplomats.

Rebel fighters locked in the war to topple Assad said there was no part of the plan they could accept, and they had lost patience with U.N. envoy Annan's peace-making efforts.

"This is just a new labyrinth. It is new silliness for us to get lost in and haggle over who can participate and who can't," said Ahmed, a Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighter in Homs, epicenter of the revolt against four decades of Assad family rule in which the more than 10,000 people have been killed, by a U.N. count.

A member of the rebel group in Damascus suburb was also dismissive.

"I'll be direct. The FSA is doing its work, and it is not looking to the outside world. We don't want a transitional government unless it is the one formed by rebel military councils. The world is conspiring against the Syrian revolution," he said.

In April, Annan tried to implement a ceasefire to quell violence before embarking on peace talks. But the truce failed to take hold.

Diplomatic sources at the United Nations said the plan Annan will now pitch on Saturday aims to start the political process without waiting for a ceasefire. (Reporting by Erika Solomon in Beirut; Jonathon Burch and Jonathan Hemming in Ankara; writing by Ralph Boulton, editing by Janet McBride)

What's So Useful About Affiliate Revenue? | Successful Affiliate ...

Are you an affiliate marketer who?s always on the lookout for ways to boost your earnings and success? Are you new to how the Internet can increase the profitability of your business? Here?s some great advice on how to get more out of your affiliate marketing programs and make sure all the time you spend on your business is time well spent. With something like affiliate marketing, there?s always room for growth.

At the least, you should annually perform focus groups with customers and site visitors. Focus groups give you a chance to see your audience and their physical reactions to your products or services. You may find that focus group members also have terrific new ideas that you would have never thought of on your own!

Emphasize product benefits in your ad copy. List the features of the product, but also list the benefits that folks will enjoy from those features. Don?t just tell them that they need to buy the product. Let them know why they need to buy the product. People need to know what?s in it for them; so tell them!

Even though you will probably get many affiliates through the internet, there are thousands of local people waiting for an opportunity like yours. Place an ad in a local newspaper. Write articles for trade magazines. Give a presentation to local groups. Targeting local people gives you a whole new market your competitors don?t have access to.

To make sure people click on your ads, don?t include too many of them. It might be counterintuitive to include fewer ads, but having too many advertisements or affiliate links can be confusing and clutter up your page, which makes readers less attentive and less likely to click an ad. If they do click one, it could be by accident, and that won?t necessarily result in a sale.

To increase the success of your affiliate marketing, search for companies that offer frontend as well as backend commissions. This will allow you to earn multiple commissions from each customer that you refer to the affiliate company?s site, and allow you to develop a long term relationship with your affiliate company.

A great affiliate marketing tip is to try and get visitors to sign up for your list whenever they visit your site. If you?re getting tons of visitors but they aren?t joining your list, you are losing out on a lot of money, and opportunities to promote any affiliate products.

Posting interesting, informative, quality content on your website will ensure that Google ranks your site higher than others, generating more traffic and more sales through affiliate links. Google loves websites which provide a service and will give you a boost if they consider you worth it, so ensure your site is tops!

You aren?t an actor, so don?t try to be one. Don?t promote any products that you haven?t used yourself. You may think you can fool the customers, but at the end of the day they will more often than not be able to see your charade. Promote products you have used and genuinely liked and it will show in your presentation.

These tips will help you increase those profits while maximizing the results you get out of each and every minute you spend on your affiliate marketing business. Your precious time is worth spending productively, and with advice like the above, you will be able to increase your earnings.

With the collapse of the real estate market, the word ?foreclosure? has unfortunately become an often used word in the English language. This article will provide information about the types of foreclosures found in various states and how they work.

In the context of real estate law, foreclosure is the legal process by which a real property lender recovers possession of the real property that secures its loan. Much like the repossession of a car or furniture when the borrower does not pay, foreclosure allows the real property lender to take back the property.

The real property lender can do this because as part of its agreement to loan money to the borrower, the lender is granted a voluntary lien by the borrower which the lender can enforce should the borrower refuse or be unable to pay.

The most common form of foreclosure in the United States is known as a ?non ? judicial? foreclosure under the provisions of the power of sale clause contained in a mortgage or deed of trust. This method has become the most frequent type of foreclosure proceeding because unlike a ?judicial? foreclosure no court action or judicial proceeding is required.

In California, for example, virtually every foreclosure is a ?non ? judicial? foreclosure because it takes very little time and money to take back the property from the borrower.

The ?non ? judicial? foreclosure process involves the sale of the property by the mortgage holder without court supervision. This process is generally much faster and cheaper than foreclosure by a court ordered judicial sale and unless stopped voluntarily by agreement between the borrower and lender, by bankruptcy stay or court a ordered stay, can take less than six months.

The ?non ? judicial? foreclosure has a variety of steps that culminate in a trustee?s sale. At the trustee?s sale the property will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Should bids not be forthcoming the property will revert back to the lender whose loan is in default. If there are bidders, the foreclosing lender can keep the proceeds to pay off its mortgage and any legal costs. Any amounts in excess of the lender?s loan will be used to pay off junior or subordinate liens. Should there be a balance after the payment of all liens it will be paid over to the borrower.

Foreclosure by court action, more commonly known as a ?judicial foreclosure,? is available in every state and required by some. This involves a lawsuit in which the lender asks for a sale of the real property under the supervision of a court. As with other court proceedings, the constitutional dictates of ?due process? permit the borrower to answer the foreclosure lawsuit and raise a variety of legal defenses. At the conclusion of the foreclosure lawsuit a decision is made by the court in favor of either the lender or borrower. Should the lender prevail, the property is sold and like with the more common ?non- judicial? foreclosure the proceeds go first to satisfy the foreclosing lender; then other lien holders; and, finally, the mortgagor/borrower if any proceeds are left.

Liquid metals are in the focus of a new research alliance

Liquid metals are in the focus of a new research alliance [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Jun-2012

Liquid metals are used in numerous industrial branches, for example, in steel and light metal castings, and are becoming increasingly significant for such future-oriented technologies as new liquid metal batteries for energy storage, CO2-free hydrogen production, or the manufacture of solar cells. This is due to their capabilities of storing energy in large quantities and dissipating heat effectively. Their thermal conductivity is 50 to 100 times higher than the thermal conductivity of water; and they continue to stay liquid in a broad range of temperatures. That's why liquid metals are best suited to cool down highly energetic processes. They, thus, also contribute towards improving the energy and resource efficiency since the efficiency of thermodynamic processes increases with increased temperatures. Two subprojects of the Alliance are, thus, also dedicated to the use of liquid metals in solar power plants.

Over the past few years, the operational safety of technologies using liquid metals has increased significantly. This was made possible through new measurement procedures which permit the full monitoring of the requisite flows. Continuing this development is one goal of the new Helmholtz Alliance LIMTECH. Another goal is to increase the energy and resource efficiency of liquid metal technologies, for example, in metal casting, the separation of valuable metals from molten slags, and the production of solar silicon. "German research is already among the world's best, and we're planning to expand this position even further," notes Dr. Gunter Gerbeth from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, who coordinates the LIMTECH Alliance.

In this Alliance, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) focus their competences in the liquid metal technologies sector together with other Helmholtz centers and universities in Germany and abroad. The Helmholtz Alliance LIMTECH is scheduled for a period of five years and has an overall investment volume of 20 million euros. The financial means are split equally between the Helmholtz Association's Initiative and Networking Fund, on the one hand, and the participating Helmholtz centers and partners, on the other hand. A program for doctoral candidates is to be established within the scope of the Alliance. Another focus is on the close cooperation with partners from industry so that the research results are implemented technologically in a timely manner.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) conducts research in the sectors matter, health, and energy. The HZDR research focuses on the following topics:

  • How does matter behave in strong fields and at small-scale dimensions?
  • How can malignant tumors be identified at an early stage and treated effectively?
  • How can resources and energy be used safely and efficiently?

To answer these scientific questions, five large-scale research facilities provide, in part, unique research opportunities. These facilities are also accessible to external users.

The HZDR has been a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest research organization, since January 1, 2011. It has four locations in Dresden, Leipzig, Freiberg, and Grenoble and employs about 900 people approx. 400 of whom are scientists including 140 doctoral candidates.

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

April 6: Samsung Electronics Co. says it is expecting a record operating profit of $5.1 billion for the first quarter. It says the result would be a 97 percent rise from its operating profit a year earlier. Samsung estimated that its first quarter sales rose 21.6 percent from a year earlier. More details will come when Samsung releases its full quarterly results.

April 12: Google Inc. reports adjusted earnings and adjusted revenue that beat expectations. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. CEO Larry Page called the first quarter "very strong," but acknowledgehd there's more work to do.

April 17: Yahoo Inc.'s first-quarter earnings show signs of modest progress under recently hired CEO Scott Thompson. Net income grew 28 percent from the same time last year and exceeded expectations. Revenue grew less than 1 percent, but represented a breakthrough because the company's revenue has been steadily falling for years.

IBM Corp. says first-quarter net income grew 7 percent, helped by strong profit margins in its services business and strong revenue growth across its software and services businesses. Revenue was flat overall because of declines in the hardware and financing segments, and revenue fell short of analysts' expectations. IBM increases its full-year guidance to at least $15 per share, above the $14.93 expected by analysts.

Intel Corp. says its net income in the first quarter fell 13 percent as spending on research and marketing rose while sales were flat.

April 18: EBay Inc. says its first-quarter net income grew 20 percent thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal business and brisk sales at its e-commerce websites. The results beat Wall Street's expectations.

Mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. says its quarterly profit more than doubled as strong demand for smartphones boosted its sales; but it expects costs to increase as it makes more chips.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. fares better than analysts anticipated in its latest quarter, boosted by a surprising rise in sales of its Windows operating system for personal computers

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reports adjusted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street's expectations. AMD's revenue forecast for the current quarter was at $1.59 billion to $1.68 billion, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.59 billion.

Nokia Corp. reports a huge net loss, one of the company's worst ever quarters, and blames tougher-than-expected competition. It has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and handset makers using Google Inc.'s popular Android software.

April 23: Netflix Inc. says it suffered its first quarterly loss in seven years, but the setback was far smaller than analysts expected. Netflix had rising licensing fees and a bill for an international expansion. Netflix predicted that it would make money during the current quarter. Still, Wall Street was worried about tougher competition. Skittish investors keyed on a second-quarter forecast that calls for a slowdown in subscriber growth during the spring and early summer.

Chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. says first-quarter net income fell 60 percent from a year ago as revenue shrank. But the results still beat analysts' expectations.

Xerox Corp. says first-quarter net income fell 4 percent as the company spent more on building its services business, which now makes up more than half the company's revenue. The company says it's investing in new offerings and long-term contracts in order to increase growth. In the short term, that has hurt profitability.

April 24: Apple Inc. reported blowout iPhone sales ? 35 million in the latest quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations. Net income nearly doubled to $11.6 billion, and revenue was up 59 percent at $39.2 billion. IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago.

April 25: Motorola Solutions Inc., which sells communications equipment to government and corporate customers, says first-quarter net income declined from a year ago, when the company recorded a large tax-related gain. Revenue grew thanks to strong demand from the company's government customers.

April 26: Amazon.com Inc. reports strong quarterly earnings and says its Kindle Fire tablet computer remains its best-selling item. However, its outlook for revenue growth was slower than expected.

Online games company Zynga Inc. reports adjusted earnings of 6 cents a share, a penny better than what Wall Street expected. Revenue grew 32 percent.

April 27: A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fueled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer-electronics industry. The South Korean company outshined handset rivals such as Nokia Corp. Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

May 1: Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. reports a slightly larger net loss in the first quarter as expenses grew more than revenue. Motorola says it still expects its acquisition by Google to close by the end of June. The deal still needs to be approved by authorities in China.

May 3: LinkedIn Corp. says its first-quarter net income more than doubled, and its revenue doubled from a year ago. Adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. During the quarter, revenue grew across the company's divisions. The business-networking company also announces plans to buy presentation-sharing website SlideShare for $118.8 million.

May 9: Cisco Systems Inc. says its quarterly earnings surged 20 percent in the latest sign that a recently completed overhaul is paying off for the world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment. However, Cisco raised the specter of a sharp slowdown in technology spending, rattling investors already fretting about the economy's fragile condition. Cisco made a sobering forecast for the current quarter and traced it to skittish customers who are waiting longer to close deals and spending less money because of growing uncertainty about the economy, particularly in Europe and India.

May 14: Online deals company Groupon Inc. says it had a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue in the first quarter, helped by increased demand from a growing customer base.

May 17: Salesforce.com Inc., which makes Web-based business software, says it had a net loss in the first quarter, but adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. It raises its forecast for full-year results.

May 22: Dell Inc. reports disappointing first-quarter results and forecasts weak sales in the current quarter. The computer maker says sales to big businesses, consumers and the public sector decreased.

May 23: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will cut 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its work force, by October 2014. News of the cutbacks overshadowed the release of HP's latest quarterly results. The company's earnings and revenue were both better than analysts projected.

June 18: Oracle Corp says net income increased 8 percent and topped analysts' predictions. Oracle also posted a 7 percent gain in its sales of new software licenses, indicating there is still strong demand for technology that helps businesses automate their administrative tasks.

June 19: Software company Adobe Systems Inc. says net income in the latest quarter fell 2 percent, amid higher expenses. Revenue grew with strong sales of its Creative Suite product.

Pa. priest case points up conscience vs. obedience

Lynn is the first U.S. church official charged for allegedly helping an archdiocese cover up abuse claims. He faces about 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted of conspiracy and two counts of child endangerment. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

(AP) ? Mild-mannered Bill Lynn proved a loyal, likable colleague as he climbed the ranks of the powerful Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

A jury on Friday found the meek monsignor too loyal for his own good, convicting him of a felony for refusing to challenge his cardinal and stop the cover-up of child sex abuse by priests.

Lynn's conviction is the first for a U.S. church official and comes in a diocese now beset by layoffs, parish closures and a new round of soul searching over the long-running abuse scandal.

"Why does this stand out? Because he didn't say no," said the Rev. Chris Walsh, a city pastor who leads the Association of Philadelphia Priests, an independent group formed last year to gather support and information for rank-and-file priests.

Lynn's conviction comes the weekend some Philadelphia parishes are celebrating their final Masses before closing for good and priests are saying goodbye before their traditional June transfers. Meanwhile, the archdiocese is cutting 45 jobs to help close a $17 million deficit, which it calls unrelated to legal bills that hit $10 million this fiscal year, not even counting most of Lynn's trial costs.

Lynn, 61, is spending his first weekend in custody. He faces 3 1/2 to 7 years in prison on the endangerment charge.

His case shines light on the culture of obedience ingrained in Catholics, especially priests. Archdiocesan priests in Philadelphia take vows of obedience to their archbishop, and trial testimony demonstrated that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua treated a priest whistle-blower more harshly than some priest abusers.

"You don't say no to Cardinal Bevilacqua," Monsignor James Beisel said last month when he testified as a defense witness.

The trial shows the need for renewed debate about the relationship between obedience and conscience, one Catholic academic said.

"The Catholic church hierarchy certainly thinks there's too much discussion in the U.S. about conscience, that people use it to justify any kind of proclivity," said Mathew Schmalz, a religious studies professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. "But in this case, there are some really deep issues about when do you stand up to the actions of those superiors."

Lynn, after a stint as a seminary dean, was hand-picked by Bevilacqua for the secretary for clergy's office in 1991. He spent a year as an understudy before becoming secretary in June 1992. He soon learned the job involved more than priest assignments and routine personnel matters.

There also was the matter of the secret church archives containing child sexual abuse complaints lodged over the years against Philadelphia priests. There were hundreds of them, dating to the 1940s. And more than 100 priests, many of them still active, were accused.

Bevilacqua wanted Lynn to spearhead the complaints.

"I never asked for an assignment, and I never asked out of one," Lynn testified.

By his own account, Lynn was an adept bureaucrat. He was organized. He was hardworking. And he was discreet.

Lynn and his assistant, Beisel, set out to gauge the scope of the problem. They took to the task each night for about two weeks, using passcodes to enter the locked room near the golden-domed Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul that housed the secret files. Beisel couldn't stand it. Given the late hour, he just wanted to hurry up and get home, he testified.

Nonetheless, they compiled a 15-page list of names and sex acts, noting whether the priests were diagnosed pedophiles or presumed guilty based on their own admissions. They also noted whether the statute of limitations had run for legal action.

A version of that list became a smoking gun at trial. The list went missing for more than a decade. Lynn told a grand jury about it in 2004 but said he couldn't find it. A copy that had been stashed in a locked, long-abandoned safe surfaced at the archdiocese days after Bevilacqua's death in January. So, too, did a 1994 memo that shows Bevilacqua ordering Lynn's supervisors to shred all copies of the list.

Many institutions try to protect their reputations, but shredding documents takes it to a new level, Schmalz said.

"Shredding documents ? especially with Watergate and all this history we have of institutional malfeasance ? does have a symbolic significance that goes beyond the view of the Catholic church as being closed and insular," he said. "So it is shocking to think what must have gone on leading up to that decision."

The task fell to Monsignor James Molloy, who died in 2006. But Bishop Joseph R. Cistone signed off as witnessing the list's destruction. He now leads the diocese of Saginaw, Mich. Neither he nor retired Allentown Bishop Edward Cullen, Bevilacqua's top aide, was called to testify.

Nor did they come to Lynn's defense. Few, if any, church officials have stepped forward to share in the blame for the sex abuse scandal, even though District Attorney Seth Williams said Friday that many have "dirty hands."

Walsh said: "The cardinal could have done that a year ago, two years ago, and obviously Bishop Cullen and Bishop Cistone could still do it."

Beisel, overwhelmed by the clergy office job, quit after a year. Lynn stayed for more than a decade. But he was the rare aide to Bevilacqua who was never made a bishop.

By 2004, Bevilacqua had retired, the clergy sexual abuse scandal had erupted in Boston, and a grand jury investigation was under way in Philadelphia. U.S. bishops had adopted a zero tolerance policy for accused priests. And new diocesan panels were being formed to handle abuse complaints, with varying degrees of success.

It was time for Lynn to move on. Submissive to the end, he said he declined to request his next assignment. Instead, he accepted a desirable posting as pastor of a large, upscale parish in suburban Downingtown. He was put on leave after his arrest last year. Loyal parishioners from the parish, St. Joseph's, sometimes attended his trial.

A spokesman for Voice of the Faithful, a Boston-based group formed in the wake of the abuse crisis to try to empower lay Catholics, said it was "obvious that here's this one man sitting (on trial) when there should be scores of people sitting there."

"The moral call to stand when you're guilty and confess seems to have been abrogated by those in power. It was, 'I'm just following orders,'" spokesman Nick Ingala said. "The organization that claims to be the moral authority in the world has given up that moral authority."

(AP) ? Tyson Gay took a giant swig of water and then another before crouching into the starting blocks.

The American record holder breathed deeply and cleared his mind ? forgetting all about the surgically repaired right hip or that he really hasn't tested it out at top-end speed in more than a year.

All that mattered was this race before him, the 100-meter final in the U.S. Olympics trials Sunday night.

And after flying down the track, not a trace of a limp in his step, this much was clear: The old Tyson Gay was back. He finished second to 2004 Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin, who crossed the line in 9.80 seconds. Gay was only 0.06 seconds behind, but the time hardly mattered.

He was headed to the London Games when a year ago that very notion looked improbable.

"Bittersweet. I always like to win," Gay said. "I came in second. But at the end of the day, it was about making the team. I got to make sure I turn this little bit of a frown into a happy face. For me to start training in March and make the team is a beautiful accomplishment."

Also joining Gatlin and Gay in London will be 23-year-old Ryan Bailey, who edged 2009 U.S. champion Mike Rodgers, Doc Patton and Walter Dix, the Olympic bronze medalist in Beijing.

Dix pulled up in the semifinals with a left hamstring injury and wasn't the same in the final. He's hoping to be ready for the 200 later this week.

"Things like this happen. I really can't say much about it," Dix said.

For Gatlin, his comeback is nearly complete.

The last time he was at the Olympics trials ? eight years ago ? he was a youngster about ready to become the next big thing in sprinting. He won gold in Athens and a world title the following year, before his fall from grace.

He tested positive for excessive testosterone in 2006, leading to a four-year ban that prevented him from defending his title in Beijing.

Now 30, he's attempting to repair his tarnished image.

"Usually, I have a lot of words. I'm almost speechless," Gatlin said. "Everything just feels so surreal. I just let the heart really go out and do what it had to do.

"I wasn't too hyped, wasn't too calm. It felt just right and went out there and gave it my all. I have a lot more left in the tank."

How much faster can he go?

"Enough to win another gold," he said.

As expected, LaShawn Merritt cruised to the 400 title. So did Sanya Richards-Ross moments later in the women's race.

Both looked sharp with London right around the corner.

Merritt, the reigning Olympic champion, finished in a world-leading time of 44.12 seconds. Joining him on the squad were Tony McQuay and USC standout Bryshon Nellum, who has an incredible story: Making the team after being shot in the legs as he left a restaurant near campus following a Halloween party in 2008.

Noticeably missing from the 400 team was Jeremy Wariner, the silver medalist in Beijing and 2004 Olympic gold medal winner. He finished a distant sixth and won't be going to London, unless it's as a member of the relay team.

Wariner trudged off the track with his hands on his hips, refusing to stop and talk.

In other finals:

?Olympic silver medalist and American record holder Jenn Suhr won the pole vault. She beat Becky Holliday, who has funded her training over the years by working odd jobs as a server and a bagger at the airport.

?Reigning Olympic discus champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton easily earned a spot.

?Marquise Goodwin, a receiver at the University of Texas, won the long jump with a leap of 27 feet, 4 inches.

?Reese Hoffa led a solid cast of shot putters, winning the event with Ryan Whiting and Christian Cantwell also making the team. Cantwell captured silver in 2008.

"I think we have three really strong throwers. We always send a strong team," Hoffa said. "We have to get it done this time."

There was no resolution just yet on a way to break the tie for third place between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh in the women's 100.

And With no protocol in place, there's no guessing how USA Track and Field plans to settle the situation. The organization is still determining a procedure to settle the situation.

Bobby Kersee, who coaches both sprinters, just hopes the national governing body doesn't do anything in haste.

To decide anything right now, the coach said, isn't fair to Felix or Tarmoh, especially because they are both running the 200 later this week.

Felix and Tarmoh finished in a dead heat for the last U.S. spot in the 100 to the London Games, each leaning across the finish line in 11.068 seconds Saturday. One of them will join Carmelita Jeter and Tianna Madison, who are already on the team.

"Just leave them alone until after they run the 200 meters and then come up with a decision, how they're going to figure out the way they want to settle this," Kersee said. "This is a situation to be dealt with later, after you give the athletes an opportunity to focus on what they need to do, what they've been waiting around to do for four years."

The 200 final is Saturday and the trials conclude the following day.

"You don't have to bother us about this now," he said. "You can wait until later."
